I'll understand if none of you know what I'm talking about. But does anyone remember that brilliant video game series "King's Quest"?
It was about the royal family of Daventry, and their awesome adventures. Stuff like escaping from the evil wizard Mannanan, or overthrowing the king's evil advisor and freeing Princess Cassima...
that video game was an integral part of my childhood. Just wondering if any of you play(ed) it.
I'd understand if not though, I've never met anyone other than my sister and my uncle who have heard of it.

I actually still have a few of those. :) I played 5? maybe 3... a lot when I was growing up and I got another around 1999? maybe 97 or 98...I think it was KQ7 It didn't hold my interest as much because it had a bunch of crazy animated clips thrown in there...

The original Prince of Persia rocked...and there was another one more like KQ called Monkey Island that I really loved.

The King's Quest series had a lot of potential early on. It peaked around Kings Quest 6 and then spiraled out of control into flames. As far as I'm concerned, the series ended at 6. 7 was too Disney-esque with its horrible singing and lighter tone. 8 was just too bland with its boring combat elements and attempt to make it into more of an action game.

That's what I remember! 7 was really bizarre and you could skip all the way to the end where these two trolls were rolling around on the floor...

Yep, that's the Disney-esque one which was pretty bad. The two that came before it were much, MUCH better.
I've also been kind of wondering why this is in media instead of video games.

I only had up to 6.... but omg 5 and 6 were just brilliant~~!!!! 5 was the one where Daventry gets stolen, I just loved it!!! There was this awesome weeping willow tree who sang this pretty song...
omg but there was this glitch, where if King Graham fell into a chasm the game would freeze and he just kept screaming... it totally freaked me out, haha!
ooh and there was one of the earlier ones, where if you went into the church and typed "kill the priest" God would strike you down... that was one of my favorite ways to die!!! YAYZ! (now, why my sister and I thought to try to kill the priest, I have no answer to that... we were heretic little children...)

I just liked how in four, when you typed in a curse word you'd get a message about how this game wasn't Leisure Suit Larry.

there was a cave with a chasm in that one too, and I always fell into THAT chasm too... ;_; sadness...

Wait, is K's Q that game with crazy nonsensical puzzles such as throw a cream pie at the abominable snowman to stop him from flattening you? And it has great animations for its time?
Kristen's old, then. I thought you are young.

yeah that was in #5!!! you had to do that and then go into the cave with the crystals!!! ^_^ that was sooo cool!!!!
I remember in the end of KQ5 you had to follow Cassima around in a labyrinthine basement, and I got soo lost... stupid cassima was impossible to follow...
but,
am I old? I guess so, kind of... I'm 19... I used to play KQ when I was like eight, though. how old is old? I've been called old by quite a few people here on DD, but I mean, I'm still a teenager!!

KQ? I've heard of it, but never played it. Honestly, the only adventure game I've ever played was Sam and Max Hit the Road. Now there was some fine gaming.
It's a comic!

I remember there was an evil genie in KQ 6, and he had golden glinty eyes, and he TERRIFIED ME! I had nightmares!!!! (because he kept trying to kill Prince Alexander!) I remember getting shot through the chest with an arrow from him, and being like, scarred forever. also the glinty-eyed genie convinced me to jump into the water at one point, and I drowned... never trust glinty eyed people.
they're usually malevolent genies.

Moments in video games that scarred me for life:
1. Hmm... Umm...
2. Accidentally letting Yorda go and letting her fall off a cliff to her death in ICO demo game. I got too nervous for her safety and I probably pressed the wrong button. Incidentally, the game developers took away that "feature" in the finalized game.
I think I only intentionally killed her one time in that game. It made me feel so bad I stopped doing it.

I don't remember King's Quest. I remember Peasant's Quest, though.
I can't believe I'm the only person to make that refrence.

I'm a huge fan of the old school adventure game genre. I played a few of the KQ games, 1, the remake of 1, 5 and 6... probably others that I can't remember.
The ones I was hugely addicted to were the Space Quest series, which I always loved for the odd sense of humor. I also played through the first three Police Quest games a million times.
Then there were the Lucas Arts games, Sam and Max, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle...
Man, I miss those games.
I'm waiting to get the new Sam and Max episodes. My new compy should be here next month and then they will be mine. Oh yes... they will be mine.

if I'm not mistaken, there was a spacequest snippet in one of the earlier KQ games...
yeah!!! you had to ride a flying carpet and it brought you to this mountaintop with a unicorn or something, and there was a little TV or something where it showed like a trailer or s/t for space quest.
XD XD

the original probably one of the first games i ever played that and the seven cities of gold or whatever that was
I played the two remakes of KQ recently though and still enjoyed it.
the fifth one was a lot of fun but I got all the way up to the last guy and the game would crash so I never got to beat it *sob* most of the game was spent on trying to get past the damn yeti!
I'd love to play it again

I sent a link to this thread to my big sister, cause we were KQ freaks when we were really little-- and she wrote this gem on my facebook wall:
the owl in kq5 says that last quote and we tried so hard to figure out what he was saying...
XD Cedric the Owl was pretty cool
Kathryn
AH KING'S QUEST!!!
you should add how we saved once whe Alexander was in the middle of his descent from that cliff because those riddles were so damn impossible. And then he kept screaming, nonstop until we closed the program because creeped you out. Or how about when we got stuck in the underworld because we didn't know what a gauntlet was, andthen once we looked it up in the dictionary, couldn't figure out which pixilated blob it was. Yes, we earned our right to win that came.
"don't touch that, it's crispin's uuuni- bibbleator"

Oh dear... I remember my mom playing the first one... that was on our first computer, the one run by DOS. I called it the-little-man-with-the-greenn-hat (I was too young to understand english and I mostly remember being told not to disturb her because she was playing).
There's the remake with the slightly better graphic, but damn that, in my heart the only real King's Quest is the Old King's Quest...
And now I've gone all nostalgic.
