Jak or Ratchet?

Until yesterday I'd only played Jak and Daxter games, I considered them the best games of the PS2 generation and was unable to find any series of games on any console since that matched it let alone surpassed it.

Jak & Daxter

Yesterday though I picked up Ratchet and Clank and gave it a go for the first time ever...and I'm addicted. I don't know what to do, my love of Jak and Daxter as "the best games ever" has been called into question, like a christian who just found Jesus's subscription to 'Magicians Monthly'.

Ratchet & Clank

So I'm here to ask a dangerous question which I pray to god wont divide the forum or cause a flame war...but...

Jak and Daxter, or Ratchet and Clank?

Mario.

Well Mario wins without a doubt therealtj, but that's like saying "is a lion or a tiger stronger?" and answering with "no, god is!", it just...states the obvious :-(

Without a doubt it has to be Ratchet. Honestly this isn't even a debatable question.

See now I'm quite far though Ratchet and I'm starting to get a bit bored of it, the missions have no real variation, the weapons, well, most I find are just crap. The control system to switch between guns is poo and horridly inconvenient when your running from a boss. I've also found very little character development (which is a shame cause it has some support cast which look quite interesting but only get a few lines an that's it) and started to realize just how much I hate Ratchets personality...he feels like he was pulled out of a Bill and Ted movie and given a few sedatives to keep him calm.

Maybe these things will improve in Ratchet and Clank 2, admittedly I can't say it's worse than Jak based on it's first game because Jak's first game wasn't amazing, but Jak 2 and 3 made HUGE improvements and ended up making large open world games with a variation in missions as well as a smooth weapon control system, some very well developed characters, and a story that not only kept me interested but made me want to do unspeakable things to the development team to get Jak 4 (which some idiot thought would be good on PSP...wtf?). From what I've seen Ratchet never makes any major shifts in the way Jak has, some may say it didn't need to, which is fair enough but unless they do something to spark my interest in number 2 (which I shall be searching all the Gameshops in the land to find on payday) I think I'll have to go against what seems to be popular opinion on here and say Jak is my personal best of the two.

Still time to convince me other wise though...

Um... you do know that Ratchet and Jak have the same game engine? Naughty Dog and Insomniac have very, very close links. These two games are incredibly similar and at least as good as each other minus personal taste. Btw, where have you been these last 7 years? I think it's a bit late if you want to start creating rifts in the fabric of the interwebs over this.

ok you seem to have taken this the wrong way. It isn't trying to cause a rift in the internet, I just thought I'd get other peoples opinions of the two franchise, thought it would be interesting to see what people are thinking several years down the line now both games have had the chance to grow and mature and because both have new titles coming out, so far people have been mature enough to state their choice and reasons and not just go 'OMG THAT GAME SO JUST SUCKS!' which I'm happy about.

As for the same engine and so on, yes I knew that, doesn't change the fact they have used the engine in different ways allowing one game to be different from the other (I mean Unreal III and the Last Remnant have the same engine but they couldn't be any more different) and thus allowing people to take sides based on personal preferences.

So, do you have an opinion ether way?

I guess I have to make my points clearer.

thing in a tophat
Yesterday though I picked up Ratchet and Clank and gave it a go for the first time ever...and I'm addicted. I don't know what to do, my love of Jak and Daxter as "the best games ever" has been called into question etc, etc

Point 1: These are very old (in game terms) and very similar. The engine was just a random similarity but they also look, feel and play very similarly - at least to me. Six and half a dozen. Personal preference.

So I'm here to ask a dangerous question which I pray to god wont divide the forum or cause a flame war...but...

Point 2: Again, they're old. If you asked this 7 years ago people might flame but by now I'd say the fires of passion have ebbed.

What I'm thinking several years down the line is "Boy, those were some great games! You can't really judge them by today's standards though." But it would be helpful if you said that at the very beginning then you might have gotten more interesting replies. I can't tell what you're really trying to say if it's not mentioned >.<

definitely play more than the first game, since that's what I'm gathering from what you've said so far. They put out like the 5th game a couple years ago now. Play them alllllll.

The way to switch weapons doesn't change, but I'd prefer having that many weapons available to me at any time instead of having only a couple to switch between. Ratchet and Clank has too many weapons to be switching them like an FPS. I honestly think that they made the best possible method of switching weapons.

I guess I can't judge an entire franchise on weapon select menus and you do have a fair point with the number of weapons ( I'm sat there every time they give me a new weapon going "this has to be the last one!" ) just a shame they didn't map the D-Pad to 4 'vital weapons' short keys or something.

, I know it's down to personal preference, one obviously isn't better than the other, I'm interested in peoples personal preference, it's just a harmless little discussion, like "Sonic or Mario" (Mario) or "Batman or Superman" (eh...nether), it's just for fun. I'm at a loss as to what wasn't explained in the original post which you needed explaining though...it's just 'jak or ratchet?' nothing deeper than that unless someone has something deeper to say. So, c'maaaan, which one do you rather? :-D

Definitely, I'd say three is the game it makes its big improvement in though.

Also, A new Ratchet game is going to be released before the end of October.

Never played J&D, and only played the demo to one Ratchet & Clank game.

But that was a fun demo.

And I would enjoy Mario more if they hadn't all been "Mario 64 with a gimmick mechanic" since the N64 era.

Ratchet beats Jak
Daxter Beats Clank.

Gameplay wise, Ratchet beats Jak because:
1. Of the Variety of the weapons
2. The ability to strafe (From RaC 2 Onwards)
3. Captain Qwark.
4. Upgradeable weapons.

However, The transformations of Jak are awesome.

Angela Cross, with the help of a rabid Crash Bandicoot, walks away the victor.

Okay, enough lulz. I generally prefer neither series, but the art design for R&C isn't all that bad.
