Is your character a Mary Sue?

Take this test and post your character and their score. How much of a Mary Sue is your character?

As for myself, my character Dash got a Mary Sue score of 20, and thus he is the Non-Sue.

So where do you rank?

Geez, I really thought she'd score high, but Rekki Lune scores 15!

Not that it's really that important in comics. As the disclaimer on the quiz says, most comic book characters score really high and are still fun to read. Still, that quiz was a lot more balanced than other ones I've seen, and gave plenty of points where you could lower your score through character flaws, so it was a better one than most. Still, don't worry if you score high, it doesn't nessesarily mean you have a bad character or comic. That's really something only you can decide!

Yeah, but people bandy about the phrase 'Mary Sue' now to describe any character they dislike who has anything in common with the creator or with anything special about them at all. Comics fans are particularly bad for nit-picking and being very anal. I mean, read any book, and there will be similarities between the creator and their characters, and most characters have something exceptional or heroic to them.
I've heard Scott Pilgrim called a 'Stu' because he's Canadian, in a band and a good fighter who has unreal adventures. He shares characteristics with his creator, Bryan O'Malley, and also has some heroic characteristics, but it doesn't make him a bad character. You get writers now who force themselves to make every character different from themselves because they're afraid of being accused of Sue-ing themselves. The truth is, you know yourself and your own life far better than other people and other people's lives. Stephen King is a horrendous Gary Stu creator, all his characters are around his age, writers and came from his region of America. In the books by C.S.Lewis, all the characters are childhood versions of himself who have wonderful adventures, become legendary heroes, even kings and queens and have his Christian values.
Okay, if I were to go crazy and write about a short twenty-something northern English comic artist girl who was a super-dooper heroine with wings and a magic katana who did everything better than everybody else, THEN it'd be a bad Sue, but there's a difference between making a heroic character or a character with something in common with you and writing your private wish fulfilment.
You can't always trust people who say your character is a Sue. Like any kind of criticism, you should be careful not to pander to a single vocal critic's words, or be swayed by peer pressure. Good judgement of both your own comic, and of the criticism you recieve is an essential skill.

Seiko 45
Yuki 19
Kaida 38

Tristan scored a -3 (that's negative three...) o.O

I kinda thought Yuki would score the highest. Strange... She really is my least developed character, IMO, and the most unrealistically skilled... despite these numbers. All my less main characters score really low. I don't think that means they are especially well-developed. They just don't have much personality to speak of.

I'm too lazy to try the other characters.

Frank Baron got a -3, but that's not even on the results chart. I'm assuming negative numbers also fall into the 0-10 category, since they don't have one of their own, but it seems weird to be able to get scores that aren't actually on the chart.

Roy got a 42. Which is actually good, because I don't intend for him to be a believable character. Hell, I actually came up with personality quirks for him from this test. But I try to understate his Sue-ism, to make him seem like less of one.

Daniel got an 8, though.
It's a comic!

Walt - 14: Non-Sue
Lloyd - 10: Anti-Sue
Dexy - 16: Non-Sue (This I'm a little bit relieved at.)

One question that I found a tad odd was "Does your character have a significant personality flaw?". I didn't really know that giving your characters personality flaws was a bad thing.

I don't think it meant it like that- they meant significant, cliche`d flaws, like being a spoiled brat, being extremely vain, being very naive, etc.
It's a comic!

Samyaza- 47 - Mar-- er... It should actually be Gary Stu with boys, right?

Erag- 5 - Anti Stu (say wha...?)

It would take a few hours if I ran all my characters through this test, so that's all I'm gonna do.

Hey guys being a non Mary Sue isn't all that great:

wikipedia
Anti-Sue

Some authors make an extreme reversal to avoid Mary-Sueism. However, it should be noted that the Anti-Sue is a Mary Sue, only written the opposite way. Anti-Sue traits include physical unattractiveness, mental illness (or even psychopathy), noticeably lacking in power relative to other characters (if even competent), being generally disliked by others or not interacting with them, wimpiness, and other unflattering characteristics or personality traits. Sometimes Anti-Sues work, but at other times they may be perceived to be as bad as, or even worse than, Mary Sues.

I'm surprised with Darth Mongoose and silentkitty results. Come on your characters are totally sexy and strong. There's nothing wrong with that in a comic!

I think the Mary Sue test is more pertained to fanfiction and novel writing. Mary Sues are annoying in writing because you can't "see" their beauty and the fight scenes. Now every character being attracted to a Mary Sue and overpowerfullness is annoying either medium mind you.

Oh yeah my test results were all between 30-40 for my characters Scout, Starla, and Pepe. So maybe I'm just complaining. Hahaha. :D

lol! Well, I wasn't sure how to answer some of the questions, to be honest. Aisha doesn't have any particular "special powers" (unless you count running her mouth at inopportune times, I guess), she doesn't have a weird eye color or four arms, she's not drop-dead gorgeous, she's not the last remaining member of her species.. in fact, there's really nothing out of the ordinary about her as far as her race goes. She has quite a few character flaws which will become a little more obvious later in the story. =p

I think if I had done Cai, she probably would have scored quite a lot higher on the test, haha..

I tend to take this "Mary Sue" stuff as a grain of salt, anyway. As long as the character interests me and they're fun to read and/or write, I really don't care if they classify as a Mary Sue. =p It all depends on what you're going for with the character. Sometimes, being over the top is a good thing.

Haha. I was expecting her to come out higher myself, but Rekki is not as exceptional as she may seem. Her raw power is very high, but her control of it is a different issue altogether. There are plenty of older, more experienced knights who could wipe the floor with Rekki Lune! Mainly though, she's immature and underdeveloped on both the psychological and social sides of things. This has barely been shown so far, but the flaws and weaknesses in Rekki's personality will be very important in later story arcs.

In case you're worried about your characters being Sues...Take heart from this. I just put myself though the test, and guess what:

Katherine E. F. Holden, aka Darth Mongoose: 36

In other words, I am a Mary Sue. This is without answering any of the 'does your character...the same as you?' type questions, and answering as honestly as possible within the limits of the test, I came out with a Sue score. So according to the test I would not be considered a believable character if I were in your story.

...I wonder if anybody can come out higher than me?
