Is a comic considered art? Yes

Unless of course, you categorise it "A", then despite concerted effort into the many aspects of the work, it will always be dismissed as "dumb porn".

Porn comics are as arty as anything else. The only trouble is that a prissy system like we have here that ghettoises them limits the audience (it's good to keep us all ages though). If I could there'd be a lot of A comics I'd feature, unfortunately that's just not possible...

If DD had the old alternative front page system again maybe we could have a different one for users that marked themselves as mature users- then "A" comics could be featured in an alternative way to the normal ones.

Adult material is just as worthy as anything else.

I think adult comics don't get passed off as 'artistic' or praised for their 'story' because the central idea of the comic being to have sex comes across as trite. I have no doubt that a porn comic can have a good story, but when it constantly derails with splooging wieners and flat flappy va-jay-jays it's hard to take it seriously.

Some of the slipshine comics are really nice though, moon over june jumps into mind. :)

flat flappy va-jay-jays
I like those.

I've seen a lot of top notch "A' comics here on DD that are just as worthy as any other comic on the site.
One particular comic though that I saw for the first time today... I wish I could UN see.
-Disturbingly horrible. Those who've seen it will know which one it is.

I suppose you could call its ability to provoke such a strong reaction of revulsion a bit artistic... Very evil work.

Yes, comics is an art, there are drawings on it with words on it.

It's combining drawings with words.

I'm reminded of picture books now, with pictures and some words to tell the story.
I hate you, and you, and YOU!!!
Does that make my signature emo?

Scott McClouds Book, UNDERSTANDING COMICS

I think it does a great job, legitimizing comics, as well.

A lot of people in the art community don't believe comics are by any means "art". Unless you're talking about indie comics. Those are generally considered more artistic than most.
Most indie comics are pretty boring though for my taste.

Yes, it is art.

If you really want to go into it, there are a few art colleges in the states that offer "Sequential Art" as a major. Sequential art meaning images in sequence, or images used to tell a story. So that major can be used for storyboarding animation, or more commonly, comics.

How do I know this? Because I'm going to art school this year to learn exactly that.

Comics as a medium have as much of a potential to be art as any other. Not every novel is art, not every movie is art, but some definitely are. I think we really need to get over this Uncle Tom reflex. Also, I'm going to punch the next person who refers to comic books as "graphic novels" in the face. Along with the next person who uses the term "cartoony" as a criticism.
