oh dang, all this dating sim talk reminded me of Princess Maker 2.
so the basic plot of PM2 is that you're a demon-slaying hero and the gods give you this little girl to raise for some inexplicable reason.
the main objective is to get her to be a princess at the end, but you can make her become lots of other things, from a hunter to a writer to a prostitute.
you can also get her to like certain male characters so that she'll marry them. one of the candidates is Cube, the hero's butler (who is a demon? I still can't figure out why a demon would want to work for a guy who became a hero for KILLING demons...) and he is adorable. I've been trying for ages to get my daughter to marry him, but the one event that you need to get them together seems to be broken on the version I downloaded. :l
...so yeah, I guess I'm obsessed with Cube. ._.

Is it possible to become too overobsessed with characters in games?

That is quite possibly the creepiest game I have ever heard described .
(please, no one try to out-creep it. I am very easily creeped).

HA HA HA!
I've actually played that game.
Hey Inkmonkey! In that game you can buy pills that increases your daughters cup size! AND you can marry her yourself! Do you want to dress her up in see through undergarments? While she's 13? Or 12? How about 11?

lol, you beat me to it! I was going to say that when I saw koushou's post. ~_~
and oh hey... you can also make her go naked completely at any age. :P And the weird thing is that nobody seems to object in game to her being naked. Cube the butler will object to certain clothing if it's worn at certain ages, saying that she's too young for it. But he certainly won't object to see-though garments or even having her go naked completely. Hmmm.

But you need to implement a cheat in order to make her naked if memory serves me right?
Edit: Oh and just to screw with Inkmonkey some more. You're raising that girl from age 10 to 16. Meaning you can do all those naughty things we mentioned during that time period.

hmm, yeah. when I downloaded the game though, it came with that cheat built in...namely in the form of a shop called Mad Eddy's. god, I love that guy. crazy guy who gives me a lot of money as well as the other hard to find items is fine with me.
And you know something? I was able to get my daughter to marry Cube. in some other game sessions, she also married that dragon boy.
the scene with the dragon boy was kind of werid.
girl: "What?? dad, I have to marry this wimp?"
Dragon guy: "*sniffles* well, if you don't want me, I'll leave you alone."
Girl: "What's that?! oh come on stop that. when you act like that it just makes me want to smack you one--eerr, I mean, spoil you. Fine, we'll get married."
Dragon: "........um, okay. can't argue with that I guess. yay, I get to get married to a young girl who kicked my ass completely earlier in the game!"

Yeah... oddly, I wouldn't find this too strange of a premise at all if you actually played as the girl. It's just the idea of playing her father, forcing her to do this stuff... yeah...

Yeah...
On the plus side you could make her into this:
But seriously, there are like 50 different endings for what this girl can end up as. And that's not counting the variations were you add who she gets married to. Although some guys are a requirement for some positions. For example she has to marry the king in order to become:
Alternatively, she can just usurp the king and become:

Well... I guess I should also say that technically your not forcing the daughter to do anything. The goal of the game is to raise the girl up to become a respected member of society. You do that by deciding what she should study, what she should work with and what she should do with her spare time. There are several factors that affect the girl like morals, strength, intelligence, charisma and so on and all of those factors rule what's gonna happen to this girl when she grows up, for example what her career choice is and whom she'll marry. If you're a shitty father figure, she'll probably end up doing some of my earlier examples. Get it right and she'll do something more respectable. All of my examples where the extreme cases. Most of the time she'll end up as a teacher or a farmer or a merchants wife or something.
Ah. Here you see all the factors. As you can see there's quite allot of them.

ditto to what product placement said. Also, if you were a shitty father that led your daughter to become an bondage queen or even other of the "bad" endings, then the goddess who gave you the girl to rise will basically give you a tongue lashing.
"How dare you be such an awful parent! You've corrupted her so much that her once pure soul has become irrecoverable. That's it, I'm reserving a special place in hell for you!!"

Hey Aurora. I think we've effectively proven that we can get overobsessed with this stuff huh?
At least when it comes to disturbing Inkmonkey that is.
Edit.
Oh also I just loved the fact that as a father, all you do is lounge around at home, ordering your daughter around. ALL your income, apart from an annual salary that you receive from the king(which he gets for saving the kingdom that one time), is based on what your daughter makes in various jobs that you put her in.

oh yeah. =) =P
that would certainly explain why she felt the need to run away from home for a whole month at a time! Sometimes my girl would actually run away for a whole year, only coming back for a week at most. After all, who honestly wants their deadbeat dads leeching off them? I always wondered where it was that she went when she felt the need to disappear.
I wonder if we should mention the other princess maker games? like that one where an Fairy wanted to become an human woman or something...

I remember friends being totally obsessed with Aribeth De Tylmarande from Neverwinter Nights and how they went nuts when they found out she could be "in love" with them in Hordes of the Underdark. O_O That was scary...
And I think we should make a separate post for that Princess Creator/maker/whatever... :)

In Neverwinter 2 I started to care about the character Elaine. In the expansion my character gets separated from my old adventuring group during a cave in and I got very saddened when I learned that over half the group got killed killed in it, including Elaine.
I also felt similar appreciation towards Bastilla in Knights of the old republic although a friend of mine got scary obsessed like yours did.

I have to stop ignoring topics when they start out slow, I completely missed out on the Princess Maker stuff. I remember when the second game made the news back in the mid 90's. Then anime fans started playing it, getting obsessed with it, and then Tecmo used it as the model for the Monster Rancher games.
If you think that series is creepy, you should see the direction the series went in after the third game. Gainax took a break from the regular Princess Maker games and let another developer put together the fourth game while they made the series more their own. I think I still have my copy of Shinseiki Evangelion: Ayanami Rei Ikusei Keikaku around somewhere. I hear the PS2 version also let you raise Asuka. Plus for those who thought they might be able to make him into less of the spineless little turd that he was, there's also a Shinji version that was released in '05. Unfortunately for those of us who aren't fangirls, Kaoru was one of the potential love interests.

Wow that talk was exceedingly creepy... I'm going to have nightmares I think.
Plot device?
And I just have to respond to all this Aeris stuff with...
No Tellah! Why Tellah? Why couldn't you take Edward instead?
I know he was old... but still I miss him.
As you could probably guess, I'm obsessed with Final Fantasy IV. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go mourn a grumpy sage.
Inkmonkey
I don't really think Aeris was as much of a Mary Sue as Cloud was. Maybe just because she wasn't the main character? I don't know the word for it, but she was basically something that existed so Cloud would have something to brood over later in the game and look all dark and emotional.
