Somebody give me the word on this please... I'm looking for something to make nice clean digital text for my hand drawn comic.

Blambot has a number of free fonts you can use for your comic.
You can also make a font out of your handwriting , if you want. I know you asked for a digital font, but I thought I'd add it, just incase you want to take that route in the future.

Blambot also has some sweet free baloon vectors.
I don't have a ton of experience with Inkscape, but it ought to do that trick. I would recommend doing your lettering in a vector program such as Inkscape or Illustrator and then compositing it in a raster program like Photoshop or GIMP vs doing everything in a raster program, in case you want to go back and scale stuff (plus it will allow you to use those nifty free balloons).

If you're looking to create a custom font, try designing it in Inkscape and then importing it into fontforge, which is a free albeit complicated font creation tool.
