Oh man, you're right! Wait, there were kind of. At the very beginning? Hm, it's been a while.
Anyway, your point is made. Indy can be done without Nazis.

My coworker is saying this movie is getting terrible reviews. Basically the stuff we're seeing in the trailer is the best stuff. ...Which is why I'm not wasting $10.00 on a movie ticket.

Your co-worker is full of shit. There hasn't been an advanced screening for reviewers yet. Probably next week.

Reviewers and test audiences usually get to see the movie months in advance. I got to see a test screening of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in San Diego in an audience with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (who was conveniently passed out on the floor) months before it was shown to the general audience. It was a great evening.

Critics go to print about advanced screenings about a week before the movie is released. Often very few test screenings happen with largely hyped studio movies so that spoilers won't get leaked to the internet. Otherwise The Phantom Menace would've made significantly less money, right? Right.
There are no reviews cited by Metacritic. Theres none on Rotten Tomatos. And theres four on AICN: 1 good, 1 bad, and 2 middle-of-the-road. And I trust the opinions of Harry Knowles and his cronies about as far as I can throw Ferris Beuller.
So this "getting terrible reviews" line is crap. I'm not saying it won't get terrible reviews. I'm saying I'm not going to allow pessimism to force me to jump the gun and assume it's bad before there's any sort of critical consensus that it is.

So...is Henry Jones Sr. dead in this one? You'd think he'd have a hologram of himself somewhere like in Superman.

Just being in the presence of Kevin Smith and a passed-out Jason Mewes was a thrill enough for me. Kevin Smith is hilarious in person, in my opinion. He's an everyday man, a lazy teddy-bear comic book geek who likes to crack jokes and tell stories.

This isn't directed at anyone in this forum in particular, but I have to laugh when people point out the previews as "unconvincing" and that's why they aren't going to see it. And usually they preface their comments by saying "I'm a big Indy fan, but..."
To them I say... Really? The last 3 movies are RIDDLED with unbelievable feats, near misses, and pure luck. Not to mention unexplained supernatural phenomena. If that's the reason you aren't going to see this movie, sorry pal, you ain't a real Indy fan to begin with.
Indiana Jones movies are more than the sum of their parts. It's all about the adventure, not the reality! I hope you all choose to get lost in that for at least a few hours and enjoy. ;)

I just wish they'd stop putting all these "blockbuster" movies in May. Do we really need 4 of them in a single month? Couldn't IJ come out in June? They don't have anything playing that month aside from Hulk 2.

That's... because it's the CANNES FILM FESTIVILE. I'm sure about 80% of those people didn't even think it deserved to be there to begin with.
Rotten Tomatoes rates it 78%.
V for Vendetta - 72%
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - 79%
Sin City - 77%
Gladiator - 77%
Dawn of the Dead -77%
Hellboy - 79%
The Mask - 75%
Some of my favorite movies up there. ;)
That's why I don't put too much stock in critic reviews.

That reviewer makes it seem like the movie is a lot like the others, but he doesn't think the format works for modern movies. Honestly, if it is just like the other movies, then I'm sure most fans will be happy enough with it.

A friend who watched it felt it sucked, once the euphoria of "It's an Indiana Jones movie!" wore off after the 1st half hour.
She told me to save my money. I think I'll save it for Prince Caspian.

Although it had an element that seemed a little out of place in an Indiana Jones film, it still kept the feel from the older movies. Overall I thought it was worth a worthwhile adventure flick. It's fun if you remember to stop thinking while watching it.

REALLY liked it. Although I thought the whole alien thing was a little out of place for an Indy film. Doesn't some of the stuff in this movie clash with what went on the the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles though?

*SPOILER*
Did anyone notice that Indiana Jones survived a nuclear blast by hiding in a refrigerator? Or that the refrigerator flew 40 feet in the air and then came crashing down and Indy got out and was completely okay?
No, he would have broken all the bones in his body, and therefore the remainder of the movie couldn't have happened. So that's my take on this movie. Indy died in the first 20 minutes, and the rest was just a dream or something.

Okay. Saw it last night. It was good. A solid C+, in my opinion. Here's what I thought:
It was pretty obvious that Spielberg and Lucas were just looking to cash in on the "National Treasure" craze that has revived the whole "adventure through archeology" franchise they started years ago.
There was absolutely no suspense at all. Anywhere.
"The floor pitches forward... I've left Mutt behind! Oh, wait. I just have to crawl back up it and it pitches back again. Never mind."
"Oh no! Scorpions! Uh.. what three of 'em? Oh, they aren't poisonous? Oh, okay."
"Ahh! The stairs are getting smaller! Oh, no. we fell 4 feet into some water"
"Oh, no! Ox lost the skull! Oh, wait, he got it back."
"The killer ants! How do we stop them? Oh, we can just use the skull."
"Thousands of angry natives! How do we survive this?!? Oh, we can just use the skull."
"If I put the skull in the door like this, then-" "Yeah we all figured that out about 5 minutes ago."
"Oh, my God! Mutt's my son!" "Yeah we all figured that out before the movie started."
... And tracking devices? Like Indy wasn't leaving a path of destruction wherever he went.
There was no over the top bad guy! Even Cate Blanchet's character wasn't evil enough. I missed the Nazis. :(
And what was with the kiss at the end? The kiss could have been more romantic than funny. It looked more like he was repulsed. "Yo! no kissing beyotch! Calista's watchin'!"
But, it was fun. Just a tad disappointing. Just like the National Treasure Movies. Good, not memorable.

Yup - I think SpANG pretty much nailed it.
I came out of the cinema and spent the next hour listing all the things that were wrong with it (the main one being that Harrison Ford appears to be too old to deliver a line with any sense of wit or drama). And then, having listed them all, thought ... yeah, but it went over quickly enough. It never felt as if it was dragging, so it must have had some decent entertainment value!
The problem, I think, is we don't want an Indy film to be just "entertaining". We want to be wowed by it!

Y'know, I thought it was better than Temple for what that's worth. While the WOW factor may have been toned down, SpANG's gripes, while valid, but what do you expect from Indiana Jones? Unless, you don't suspend disbelief at all with ageless Knights, heart ripping ceremonies, drinking antidote 5 minutes after drinking poison and feeling no ill effects (it works).
