The character I'm trying to write a story around is what you might think of as Death's Enforcer. Death sends its enforcer out to punish the spirits that violate their contract with Death.

Most times, a GOOD spirit will take care of whatever affairs it left unfinished with life then allow Death to take them. An EVIL spirit (let's say a serial killer) will often ask that it take revenge on the people who caused his death, but instead of returning to Death it starts taking lives that aren't supposed to be taken. Death then sends out its "enforcer" to take care of the evil spirit, then restores the innocent lives that aren't supposed to be taken yet according to a book it carries with it.

So the story I'm writing is about one of these enforcers. He travels the world doing Death's bidding and punishing any souls that violate their contract with Death. Not sure what I'd call his occupation though...

I hope I didn't twist your brains around with my explanations. :)

Death himself is just a psychopomp, so maybe his enforcer is a psychopomp-in-training? I dunno if this is a humor comic but you could think of lots of slightly absurd sounding names that would fit :) Vice-Death!

"Enforcer" sounds very grim and tough though, I don't know if that's the image you want.

It sounds like a bounty hunter to me.
I can't think of any other name for the job really.

Well, it is pretty grim. The story is about this guy hunting down one of the spirts that decided it didn't need to honor it's contract with Death.

And he's not really a bounty hunter. From what I know, bounty hunters only work for the highest bidder, and they expect to be paid. This guy isn't being paid, and he does work for Death. I guess I could find a synonym or a word with a similar meaning to "Death's Enforcer", since that looks like the kind of thing he does.

You could also research mythology and try to see if some ancient civilization already had something like your character, or something similar so you can use the same name or a variation of thereof.

How about Death's second? He seems like a personal assistant of sorts.
