I wonder is it possible to keep your webcomic going for over 5 years

Well, there are plenty of long-running comics. Penny Arcade, PvP, Questionable Content, AppleGeeks, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Sluggy Freelance, Twisted Kaiju Theater, MegaTokyo, Fetus-X, and plenty more.

Personally, I still see myself making webcomics five years from now, but I can't say that I'll still be working on Victory Theme.
It's a comic!

Not all comics are meant to run forever. Sometimes, they just go until they are done. Actually, I think "I made it to the end!" sounds better than "I just kept it going forever!"

Personally, I don't like story strips that go on forever and ever and ever. Gag strips, it's okay as long as the jokes stay funny, but when story strips don't end, it becomes really, really hard for the author to keep things interesting enough for me (and, I can only assume, others) to want to keep reading. The story usually starts getting pretty ridiculous as the writer tries to keep thinking of new things to happen in order to keep the comic going.

So uh. I guess what I'm saying is yes, of course it's possible, but some comics just shouldn't.

Heck, we're on a five year plan!

We plan on doing Marital Bliss??? until we retire.

As for our other "comics" (We only have one other right now, I'm just doin' it for fun) so...I plan on doing it exactly five years, then revamping the character and style and really, everything about it. But, for five--it will be three panel "quirky" webcomic.

Our other projects have definitive arcs and are comic book; as oppose to comic-strip. Those will span like a regular comic book arc or "graphic novel." So, some stories may span more than the 5, some less. Depends on the story. I think a lot of webcomic creators are scared to end the story...It's hard to create something from scratch...but, I think it's what keeps one's writing fresh. That's just my opinion.

I have a plan for my comic. It will have an end. It might take me a long time to get there, but there's an ending in my head. Angel Moxie was a comic with a brilliant ending, made me cry and everything...kind of a shame, since that was a webcomic that COULD have gone on for years and years.
Gag strips are different though, they can go on as long as they stay funny. However, in the case of the non-web manga 'Azumanga Daioh', there was an ending at the end of volume four that really just rounded off the series. It worked well because the series followed the story of the four years the girls spent at high school, and ended with their graduation.
So I suppose that whether you do jokes or stories, or a mixture, so long as you keep it fresh, it doesn't matter how long or short a run you do.

I think No Need for Bushido has been going on for around that long.

All things should come to an end... unless you want to turn into The Simpsons and pull random plot ideas out of a hat.

All of my work is limited-release meaning I plan the beginning and ending at the same time. I don't think I could ever do a "web comic" in the style of random strips like Penny Arcade and others... it's just not my style.

Azumanga Daioh is the only manga series I ever purchased. It was very well done and if I recall was just like a newspaper comic or something similar. You usually don't get a progressing story with an ending on those. Especially a story so well done.

The Devon Legacy can go well over 5 years. I have an ending to it but I doubt I will get to it in my lifetime. Especially if I can't speed up progress >_<

Read "The Devon Legacy".

My comic 'Corey's Mag' has already been going for over 5 years (its only just come to drunkduck though.

Also, I'm going to make sure to keep all my comics going for 5 years, then I'm going to find this topic and post in it.

I have an ending in mind for mine. It doesn't necessarily HAVE to end, though. It could simply go off in a new direction. If I updated once or twice weekly, I likely could go five years, but updating daily, it won't be that long (3 or so years for sure). I've drawn just over 500 pages, and the story isn't stale. It's getting more interesting. If I worry it could go stale, I will end it before that can happen...

I've been doing online comics for six years, and my current comic penis is almost at three years old. July 28th will make it a full three years. Fucking crazy.

Due East officially started in 2003 so we're at 4 years right now, even though we only found our way to DD last month! It's definitely possible, whether it's a comic book or a comic strip. :)

well.. my comic's just about a year old right now. -_-. a year seems like a reeeeally long time... oh well. and I'm only at the tip of the iceberg!!! but I think if my comic goes on for two more years (it BETTER not) I'll just trash it. I want to have achieved something really, really great by the time I graduate from college, and I don't want to be dragged down by my endless story.
however, I have everything planned out, beginning, middle, and end, so it would never go on TOO long. and I update very regularly, so...

Is it possible?

Yes.

Is it plausable?

Depends on the person.

I've been working on Shifters for 9 years now. But, this year, I started a 'redux' version of it because the old version was just too much of a bear to move forward with. It was a learning experience. Now I'm taking what I learned and moving forward with a re-envisioning/writing/drawing of the story as I had originally intended it. (originally I worked with a writer who had some radically different ideas about the story than I did. It made for some very weird directions.)

Most people don't last more than a couple of years, although some can go the distance. Its not easy tho.
