While on vacation in the mainland United States I bought the "Don't Call Me Shirley" edition of the movie. There's that "PG" rating on the back of the DVD case so I figured I can watch it with my 13 year old niece and her mother. Yet near the end of the sequence where the flight attendant tells everyone to "get into their crash positions" a woman jumps out right at the screen... TOPLESS!!! What the heck?!?
Then there's that scene where a woman goes hysterical in her seat and this line of people taking turns to calm her down...

I thought "Airplane!" was supposed to be rated PG...

Back in the day there was only PG and R ratings. Airplane! came out in 1980 and the rating PG13 wasn't invented until 1984 after the Second Indiana Jones movie and Gremlins came out (which caused a stir because many felt the scenes of violence in both movies were too much for a PG rating, but not enough for an R rating)
They never really updated the rateings of movies that came out before 1984 to match the new system. ^_^

That movie probably should have been R and not PG. It's still freaking hilarious though. Why does it matter if your neice and her mother sees boobs, they're girls...

This reminds me of the time my parents rented Jack Frost 2 for the children to watch. It actually turned out to be a horror film with alot of nudity and an evil snowman who kills for fun.
My innocence was crushed that day.
(i was like, 10 at the time.)

A hospital? What is it?
It's a big building with patients. But that's not important right now...

Well, at least they replaced the scene where a guy was in the bathroom trying to shave while the plane was crash landing. All the blood on the walls made me cringe. It's now a scene where a woman was trying to put on lipstick.

all i have to say is that Airplane! is one of the funniest movies ever. I think it should be PG and everyone should be forced to watch it by court order.
Resisting this order means possible imprisonment or the forced of company of all the people you don't like.

Your 13 year old niece never saw boobs? 13 is like the new 20.
And that scene with the hysterical woman is comedic gold.
You get much more from most non-western countries. TV programming is not censored like here.
Actually, this enrages me.
Reminds me of when they cut the Wile E. Coyote crash scenes from Roadrunner. Or when Greedo shoots first.

Yeah, that crash scene was surprising but funny.
Wait, that's the part you had a problem with? (grin). Not the woman waking up with the horse, not the man sniffing glue and jumping out the window to his death, not the oral sex to a plastic dummy, not any scene with Johnnie, not the ambulance crashing at the end, but that scene? (grin again)
How about use of the n-word in Blazing Saddles?

A recent expose on the US ratings body showed that everyone involved in the appeals procedure for US ratings is, in some way, affiliated to the major studios. This means that a film produced by one of the majors is going to be given a more "lenient" rating than an independent movie featuring the same amount of sex or violence or just general bad taste.
It's a corrupt and inherently flawed system with no real rules or guidelines but the powers behind it are never going to change it, because they dominate some 90% of US media output and it works in their favour.
Still ... Airplane, eh? Classic!

Over here in Holland, the original rating for South Park (the series and the movie) is for children above 6 :) So I don't really know what's the big deal. 13 year olds must have seen boobs. There is this thing called the internet and otherwise they will learn about it soon at school. I just wouldn't worry too much about those sort of things. It doesn't really harm children when they see it, especially in a funny sentence.

I used to (and still do) watch movies rated above pg with some of my little cousins and my sister.
We came out fine.
Right,Brian?
Actually, that was the bow up auto pilot, not a plastic dummy.
That would have been awkward.

If theres one thing that girls don't need to see its breasts in a comedy movie from the 80s. Theres like almost no comedy films from the eighties that have womens bare breasts, and sure enough, you get the one that happens to have them.
Also the blood cutting scene was gold, probably one of the best gags in the whole movie.
I looked all over you tube for the clip, can't find it.

Back in the day there was only PG and R ratings.
They also had G. The only real difference is that they split the PG rating between regular PG and PG-13. It still kind of cracks me up that if you actually read what the two ratings are supposed to mean, you would think that PG was the worse rating.

Stupid ratings...
The Australian ratings are here [classification.gov.au].
We have G, PG, M, MA15+, R18+, and X18+.
It used to be just G, PG, M, R and X. The addition of the MA15+ just means that the M rating is now weaker and that younger people can view a lot more films that previously- before the M rating meant that the content was restricted to viewers 15 and over, now that only applies to MA15+. The M rating now means "Moderate impact", meaning that it's just an advisory, not a restriction. Now the classifiers have more choice and so do younger veiwers!
lol! That failing film industry has to boost revenue somehow! Expand the audience! But also, since the ratings now apply to games as well here, that was another argument for making the ratings broader.

Well, they got to learn about boobs eventually! lol!
Bless you.
You know what? I don't loose sleep if kids see boobs. I mean, they're just boobs. It isn't the end of the world. The sun will shine again.
I think the MPAA has gotten way out of control with these ridiculously strict ratings of late. In order for something to get a G anymore, it has to be insultingly bland.
Boobs should be PG. Hell, they ought to be G. They're just boobs!
