I've heard that the animators on that cowboy bebop movie referenced a bunch of old kung fu movies for their fight scenes. I wonder if the naruto animators just referenced the same movie?

I've heard that too. Specifically, I've heard that both are a frame-for-frame copy of a Bruce Lee film.

Hahaha - it's hard to keep up with both films at once when they're all over the screen like that. XD It's making me want to go watch Cowboy Bebop, though, so I suppose that's a good thing?

I think it has to do with the deadlines and crazy hecticness of the industry. There seems to be a lot of plagiarism in manga, too.

Well now, my knowledge of old kung foo movies isn't that great, but I would love to see a clip of the bruce lee movie if it is indeed a copy.

Interesting article. Half of the examples given there are kinda stretched though. If the pose is similar but doesn't look exactly the same it might look similar by accident... or the creator copied it from his/her memory without even noticing.

Others on the other hand are clearly copied, traced even.

Interestingly, things like that slip by in american comics all the time.
Old covers are referenced all the time (as a form of "homage") and artists like Greg Land trace over photos from magazines (for example a model taken from a cover of Maxim, mirrored, and redrawn as one of the covers for Sojourn).

So far there hasn't been any bigger problems because of that. I guess comics aren't popular enough to warrant any action... either it flies under the radar of whoever might get worked up enough to sue the publishers... or they decided there's not enough money to pull out from this one.

On the other hand, copying from a photo is much different than stealing someone elses drawing entirely. I don't think you can copyright poses, not yet anyway.

It's not limited to just tracing photographs. The best example I can find is this page of panels Rob Liefeld has swiped from other artists.

Interestingly, though, several of my teachers at school are comic book artists, and I've been told that swiping poses, backgrounds, etc. is very common in the industry. Largely it has to do with the hectic schedule your average artist has to keep up with. Generally it's kept to unimportant stuff (background characters, etc.) just to make things go faster. No one really cares unless it ends up as promotional material or is otherwise given more importance than your average comic page.

Pretty old stuff.
Animators just do that, because they're lazy and can't come up with their own ideas.
