I'm in the middle of a messy crisis in my life. And it has made updating my comic close to impossible lately. I had originally decided to pull the plug on How Unfortunate, thinking that if updates are going to be few and far between, that readers would grow sick and tired of the delays and stop reading.
But after a few days of thinking it over, and having friends yelling "Why are you stopping the comic?". I'm trying to think of what would be the best thing to do. And I was wondering if the fine folks at the DD Forum can help me. Should I just put the comic on hiatus until things get back to normal? Or should I just update whenever I have the chance? Or should I try to find a guest artist to fill in for a while?

If you have a friend willing to take over art duties for a while, that would probably be ideal, but there's nothing wrong with going on hiatus.

Taking a short break is acceptable. I think that sometimes guest artists in a GN can be a little distracting. It makes the continuity of it fall apart a bit.
Just make a note of it on your latest updated page in the author's notes. Or a Hiatus page...better yet, call it a "be back soon" page. So many times hiatuses become permanent, letting people know that you are coming back would help.

I want to thank everyone that replied. I've decided to restart HU in November (I want to have a good amount of completed pages done before restarting). BTW, Things are a little better in my life right now. Hopefully, I won't have any more problems.

I had to take may 2005 to may 2006 off. I started doing digital which was more time consuming, then i had car problems, and had to work 80 hour weeks, and moved and I wasn't getting alot of help from my team so I got like 1 or 2 comics up, but all and all it stopped. Which sucked, because at the time I had built up to over a hundred uniques a day and I was pretty stoked about that, but really, in retrospect it was good that I stopped, because I wouldn't have been able to put out a product that I was proud of. I've been updating again for the last 6 months or so, and I haven't missed an update and I really like how the comic looks (still sorta incomplete but in a way I'm happy with.)
I'm still no where near the vistation I had when I stopped but it's like having the time off made me realize how much I missed doing it.
