'Hi-fi color for comics' is a book by brian and kristy miller and it has a big section on flatting with lots of interesting tequniques and ways to make it easier. The authors color comics for a living

Oh what the hell. Let's see if I can't manage to give you an entire post with the basics....
#1: Open the GIMP and load in your scanned picture.
#2: Clean up your picture if necessary using the Threshold (in the colors dialog) and Gaussian Blur, with a bit of Sharpening, until it looks good.
#3: Open the Layers Dialog and right click your picture. Select Add Alpha Channel. Then, with your picture layer selected, change its mode from Normal to Multiply.
#4: Once that's done, add a new layer, make sure it's white and not transparent, and put it below the picture.
#5: Add a transparent layer and put it in the middle, between the white and the picture.
#6: Using selections, brushes, and whatever else you prefer, begin coloring on the transparent layer. Add as many layers as you need, merging them together later to save on memory and not crash your computer.
Those are the basics as to how both my artist and I learned to color with the GIMP. There are plenty of other ways, but that's how we do the basics.

How to GIMP-
Buy a rubber suit.
Get a friend to zip it up and keep you in his basement.
Well done, you are now a GIMP.
