I hear stories of players who feel no fear playing games like Doom, and they say they're not using cheat codes or mods. I'm playing Doom 3 without any codes or mods, but I end up reacting like a chicken when I hear that monster coming around the corner.... and empty all my ammo into it. The fact that the game is dark and you have no lights on your weapons isn't helping much.

I try to think "it's just a game", but then that Imp comes around and I'm scrambling trying to find my shotgun... x_X

The people saying it's nothing scary are the ones who've made it past the first few levels and gotten to the point where all the scares are repetitive. The game starts out strong and scary, but throws everything its got at you within the first hour or so, after that it just starts recycling itself, and becomes significantly less scary, and actually kind of pathetic.

Think that's scary? Play Super Mario holding the B button and not picking up powerups.

But seriously Doom isn't scary if you have the map layout in your head. Remember that its not game over if they get near you so relish in your health loss, be a virtual masochist.

The game didn't feel scary to me. I'll admit that they managed to do a good job building up the tension in the beginning but when the monsters popped up I wasn't that impressed. I guess they're not scary since I can shoot them.

You know what would be scary? Making a game where every once in a while you encounter murderous spirits or monsters that can't be harmed by conventional weapons. The only way to survive is to run away. Make the only viable escape course riddled with obstacles and I bet you're panicking like crazy as you're trying to jump over that crate in front of you.
Those were my two cents.

Don't you know that you can't jump over crates? How's that for a scary moment when you're trying to outrun a ghost?

Oh, you mean like in Resident Evil 3, Silent Hill 4, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and every single game in the Clock Tower series?

Because, yes. That would be scary.

It shouldn't be that scary.

Doom 3 is basically like this-

You walk into a dark room,
An imp appears behind you,
You turn around and shot gun him in the face.

Repeat for rest of game.

Wow. There sure are allot of games I haven't played in the horror series.

Although I did play Resident Evil 3. When was there a unkillable foe in that one? That nemesis guy doesn't count because you could drop him, every time you met him. Even though he popped back 5 minutes later. That didn't make him scary. Just annoying.

The only Silent hill game I've played was nr 2. I like that game. It had some decent, frightening atmosphere. I liked how they played with sounds in it.

Has anyone tried those Japanese horror theme games? Like those Siren games? Also, I heard that there was this interesting one where you're basically armed with a camera and you're traveling through a haunted house. You never see any ghosts there but every time you take pictures in the right spot, you'll see a ghost coming after you or something similarly spooky.

I think only two games have really made me jump

the dog crashing through the window in RE1 caught me by surprise, and pretty much any scene in Dead space

Silent Hill and Dead Space are still very tense games, i have a hard time playing them because i'll be on the edge of my seat hoping that something wont just dart out and slice my scalp off (and often times, something does)

Doom though, I always found too comedic to really get scared of it. which reminds me, Serious Sam is getting an XBL remake, i need to check dat out

OK, then we'll drop RE3 from the list.

Silent Hill 4 featured some really annoying ghosts that were unkillable and could psychically attack you by getting close. Then, about half-way through the game, the guy who killed all those ghosts shows up. Sometimes he has a gun, sometimes he has a chainsaw. He's not as annoying as the ghost, but he still chases you around and can't be killed.

Shattered Memories will apparently feature no combat, and instead will have you running from a whole bunch of monsters that change depending on how you play the game (supposedly, the game will try to analyze you and create the perfect horror experience customized to the player's personality. An awesome idea, so let's hope they can do it right)

The Clock Tower series is essentially a slasher horror story in videogame form. Haunting Ground is pretty the much the same, as it was planned as a Clock Tower game originally.

Also, I believe there are more (I think Hellnight is also an example, but I've never played it). Cat-and-Mouse horror games are certainly rare, but they do exist.
