How far in advance do you work?

I started adding up today and realized with 3 updates a week I could go until the middle of September without doing a new comic. On top of that I've got about 35 ideas scribbled on a piece of paper at work.I'm just curious about how far in advance other people go.Do you like having a cushion in case something happens or do you fly by the seat of your pants update to update?

I've tried to make myself a buffer, but it turns out that I will only spend time on my comic if I'm coming up to the deadline.

I work better in time pressed situations, if i have a buffer i get all lazy with new progress and may have well just uploaded from the start. Also having comments/views coming in for the comic helps motivate me to get more done, i have about 6 different comics with 1-3 pages done and then stopped. :/

I try to keep at least a week's buffer ahead of schedule, although by the time the buffer's up, something usually happens that requires me to use it by the very next update.

I presently have a 30 page buffer.
... I had no idea it was that big until right now when I actually counted.
I like having a larger buffer because of my job. I'm on my feet almost literally all day, so when I come home, the last thing I want to do is more work, comic or not. Then on my off days, or whenever I want to draw something, I draw more comic! It's gotten a little confusing, to be in one part of the story, and then going way back to a completely different part to upload it, but :)

I'm currently almost 4 weeks ahead of schedule. I just recently started using a buffer. I actually like making buffers, I feel like I'm getting things done quicker. I used to think it would be bad cause I always wanted to post my comics right away, but it's a huge load off my shoulders when I'm too busy to work.

I work best with some pressure on me, and that may be why I tend to update with a fresh comic on that day. When I have lots of spare time, I make something for tomorrow. I have a hectic schedule.

At this point I decided not to upload anything unless it's entirely drawn (whether it's the entire book or one volume of it).
That is proving kinda difficult with all the distractions provided by life thus me not having a currently running comic, but hey, the same distractions would get in the way of my updating/drawin schedule anyway and I don't want to be late with updates once I start again.
I guess that counts as a super-sized buffer? :)

^^ I am impressed by some of the answers here! :0
I kind of make my comic up as i go along (before you say, yeah it shows lmao)so never seem to get a big store of new ones.
I don't think I could stop myself posting it on the duck the minute I finished a page :s

I like to be a full issue ahead of myself (32 pages- so on a twice weekly schedule that gives me about four months to script, pencil, ink and scan the next one).
I'm about three months ahead right now, but only because I've cut back to updating once a week. I've still got the second half of the issue to ink yet. :(

I am of an impatient nature. I want my readers to be as caught up on my pages as I am. So, yes, this leaves me months without any updates (because I'm either too busy or not in the mood to draw) but it makes for a pretty decently-sized archive new readers can browse through without worrying too much about when my next update is going to be. True story, when I first started posting comics here (sans photoshop and art skills) I'd post upwards of 20 pages a day, all at once.

Bah, buffers. Who needs them. I make my comic as I go, which ends up two pages a week. I plan a very simple overall plot, but I focus on the story that I have at the moment. So I know what my goal is, just slowly working towards it.
Then again, I'm starting to think I should go weekly updates, I could easily create an infinite buffer.

Well, I'm about 3 weeks ahead right now on one comic and 5or 6 weeks ahead on the other one. I hate it, I was 9 weeks ahead before, but our move to San Diego from Argentina knocked me back... I have to be ahead with more than one comic, several sites to post on, constant promotion, other work to do and three kids (who are on summer break right now).... I could never keep up otherwise.:)

It usually depends.
For Ryu's Krew - I like to work a few pages ahead. Especially right now, this is good, because I lost a bit of inspiration to work on it, so I can kind of slack off. :P
For For Great Justice - Usually Trevor and I work on one strip at a time.
My other two comics - As I have yet to complete pages, I'll just say, I kind of work ahead, in a way. I'm still a few months away from getting a tablet, yet, I'm already penciling stuff. :P

Boy, I don't work in advance at all XD. I try to but it never works; the most ahead I've ever been was 4 pages I believe. I'm going to try to draw a few pages this week though before school starts. But really, I'm one of those types that works best under pressure like stated before. Usually a start a page around 2 days before it's suppose to go up and finishing it on the update day. ^^;

I've started scripting my comics, writing down exactly what happens on each page. It's made the whole page-making process go a lot faster, which means I've been able to build up some buffers.
I have about two weeks of buffer for both comics right now. I'm really busy lately, so I tend to draw in spurts, doing ten comics in three days. I don't much care for doing it that way, actually, and would almost rather do a page a day.

I've written about five pages in advance, but as far as an actual finished buffer goes, I... don't actually have one yet. Current aim is to create one. Unfortunately, two things stand in my way: I'm dreadful at doing work unless there's a deadline rearing its ugly head right in front of my face, and when I do finish a page I get the strong urge to post it right away, buffer ambitions be damned. :P

Updating three days a week with a buffer of over 100 comics, I have comics from now until late April...and I still work on comics. I'm an overachiever.

I do most of my pages the night before. But because I share a comic, I have two weeks between pages.

I hate having a buffer, because by the time I get around to posting a page, it's 'old', and I am no longer excited about it, and don't even really feel like posting it. And then the comments are almost like they're addressed to Kristen of the Past, and not me. Posting brand-new work is better- it's fresher in your mind, and it makes you work faster (you can't take a week off randomly!)
