How do I smooth lines in GIMPShop?

I've been folling around with gimp but i still can't get rid of the jagged raster look. I really need a vecter based program but the really goodones aren't free. Anyone got any tips for me?

Use the paths tool and then stroke those paths. You may not necessarily be trying to do text bubbles, but this may help.

If you're referring to smoothing out you're lineart try this:
1)layers>transparency>color to alpha (make sure it removes the whites)
2)layers>transparency>alpha to selection (selects the lineart)
3)dialogs>paths (opens the paths dialouge... obviously)
4)Click on the "selection to path" button
5)select the new path
6)Click "path to selection"
7)fill the selection in with black
I use the GIMP in it's normal windowed form , so things may be different.
