I'll certainly admit to Garth Ennis pushing taste with an occasionally irritating regularity - honestly a lot of Preacher felt a step too far for me or senselessly OTT, but at the same time it's what made it so distinctive. As far as straight horror goes I don't think there's much to complain about.
Certainly not for everyone, but then it's not meant to be - I'd still recommend his work to someone looking for a comic with a horror focus.

Even though it is more of a thriller in the Hitchcock vein of writing I really, really enjoyed Osamu Tezuka's "MW" and while it does have horrific things in it the horror is in the people places and situations. In addition, it is one of the few Tezuka comics with no slapstick gag's or comedy.
It is hard for me to find recently made good Horror comics. It is either not scary to me or useless with oversized boobs and some sort of sexual abuse. Which I feel is such a crutch for most authors to use as a scare tactic or device.
Courtney Crumrin, which is in the vein and style of Horror comics, is not terrifying but it is something everyone can usually read and get a little creeped out by. Fairy's can be just as scary as Wolfmen etc.

There's a book out there called "The Mammoth Book of Best Horror Comics" with comics from lesser-known publishers from the 50's to the present. I highly recommend it because it demonstrates a variety of approaches to horror in sequential art and it serves as a good crash-course in the history of horror comics.

I think Japanese horror comics has an alluring sense of eeriness to them. The adaption of "Ringu" is by far one of the creepiest mangas I've read, and I'm sure there are many others of its kind out there. I just haven't found them yet XD
Time to make the donuts! =D

I agree. Japanese horror movies are pretty bad but their comic counterparts are normally much creepier. On average you can just pick a random comic and get chills from it. I'm reading Gyo right now and am really enjoying it. Hope it doesn't flop.

I really need to check out the Ringu manga. I love the movies (Ring, Rasen, Ring 2, and Ring 0), and I've read all of Koji Suzuki's Ring books (and I must say that Vertical Press did a great job with their translation--Suzuki's style comes across as very clean and better than many popular English-writing authors).
I don't read many horror comics, although I love Hellboy and B.P.R.D. (if you consider them horror). I also just started reading The Walking Dead, and it's off to a good start. I also enjoyed the first volume of Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing (need to pick up vol. 2) and the first 3 volumes of The Sandman. (Although not horror, they do contain a lot of horror elements, and the art reminds me a lot of the old EC Comics horror stuff.)
