I can't say I've ever been told to go ahead and hit any animal in the road, but my personal preference is to try and stop.

Lucky kid, though.

I got my foot run over by a car once(which my mom was driving, actually), when I was little, and I don't think I even cried. Maybe they're just making children tougher these days. :P

I don't know if hitting the cow would be any better, they're big and can do a lot of damage. I've heard of plenty of people getting killed when they hit elk, they're a little bigger then a cow, but still.

That's the advice for Australian roads too. There's all sorts of animals out there but what you're likely to hit of the road is a kangaroo, bullock, or an emu. Most vehicles have roobars on the front to protect them in case of a collision. A big roo could make the care undrivable and then you could be stuck out there, which can be just as deadly.

Even with a roobar though, a big bullock can still kill you if you hit it. Even a roo can occasionally.

As for stopping... well the roads are preeeety long, you have to drive fast if you don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere forever, there's just not much out there, no towns, nothing. The roads are empty of traffic, so people drive pretty fast. That makes a sudden stop potentially more dangerous than hitting if something appears in front of you.

I don't know, it depends on the situation.

Eh, doesn't sound weird to me. During the summer you're likely to run into a sheep or two wandering on the roads where I live. I almost rammed into an ewe with her two baby lambs while driving in a fog once. They're much smaller though so they're not quite as deadly to hit.

Isn't the reason why it so dangerous to hit animals like cows and elks because they have such long legs? Because they stand up so high off the ground, they slide along the hood of the car and through the windscreen.

We have bears on the road! And Deer! And Rabbits! And Mountain lions!

And cows.

Can't even attempt to leave the place without having to swerve around some form of life.

We even have trees!

In New Jersey we have deer. A large buck, or even a medium sized doe will ruin most cars. A friend had a 1970's Oldsmobile that was a real boat (HUGE!) He hit a buck. The car was destroyed. This is back when cars were made of metal. Imagine if you hit that buck with your litte ricewagon... Your car would be wrapped around the deer who would look at you crossly and walk off.

The whole thing about not braking is on major highways or with small animals. GOing 65 miles per hour on the interstate you shouldn't stop suddenly for a puppy. Not even the full sized labrador I hit on the NJ Parkway. I swerved into the next lane and he sped up. I ran of of room to swerve and had no room to stop.

But driving an M60 tank in Germany? Run over that farm animal, an officer in a jeep will come up behind you and pay the owner for it. But seeing that dark red smear on the tracks later on. *gulp*

That's always baffled me... getting hit and run over by a tank has got to be a lot harder than with a car. They're bigger, slower, and louder.
