Hey you! Do you do a sprite comic with your own custom sprites?

So I was talking to some friends and we got into a conversation about sprite comics on DrunkDuck. The first two people that popped into my head was Zwuh and Titch but after that, I couldn't think of anyone else.

So does anyone know of other people who do sprite comics but with their own custom sprites (and custom made characters?) If they're here on DrunkDuck, that would be cool. Surely there's more then two people on DD who does their own custom sprite comics right?

And how difficult is the process? Does it take long to update? Are custom sprites hard to make? Any restrictions? Special things that drawn comics can't do?

Custom sprites can be made by first drawing a real drawing. Make sure its a chibi version or similar to those sprite comics with big heads.

Shrink it down sooooo much.

Then enlarge it again soooo much. That will give it the "sprite" feel. Tried it before and it somehow worked.

NOW UPDATING!!!

Squidi (not at DD)

Um, Mr Niel of Dasein has done some great looking sprite specials. He IS at DD! :)

But then they're really only sprites if they've been 2D animated game characters, that's where the name comes from. ;)

Well yeah. :) I suppose if we want to be technically correct, it's pixal art. Or something along that lines. I rememeber reading a post Squidi made explaining that (I think that was back when he hung out at buzzComix or TopWebComics? I forgot which.)

Anyhow, I was browsing about and found this comic:

I've got custom made characters in my sprite comic. Alexanders Adventures Drunk Duck Edition and Reploid Revolution. I did use CardCaptor Schlueter's base for the girls, but the boys are all custom made by me, except the cameos. The links are:

www.drunkduck.com/Reploid_Revolution (in progress still)
Check 'em out! If the links work...

Actually, I think BK means sprites that are made entirely originally; yours are clearly heavily modified Megaman sprites.

All of mine are completely customed, and that goes for backgrounds too.

Edit: Nevermind, you found mine. Yay!

As for your questions, how many sprites you need is the main factor on time. The majority of the sprites I make now only take 5-10 minutes or are minor edits, but the major characters in my comic took a long time to make. The backgrounds take way longer, but I usually make those during the preceeding chapter. Making the comics themselves take the same time as it does to make any other sprite comic, if not shorter since I've got everything I need in two files which are on my computer rather than hundreds scattered around the internet. And I think hand drawn comics have way more freedom than sprite comics, the only reason I don't draw mine is because I can't draw worth crap (the reason most spriters don't draw their's).

I agree with Rengori. The spri- Poses I make usually take 25-30 minutes, depending on detail, but if it's just modifying one of my existing ones, it takes about 5 minutes, but that's just how my style goes. And I draw, too. I just sprite because it's so fun.. Am I straying from the subject? I hate when I do that..

What about my comic Enter the Duck 2? Or doesn't that count since a few pages are manga?

Well, i've been looking at YoshiRyu's tutorial comic that he makes his own custom sprites from scratch. I also have a custom sprite, but its based off of MM7 sprite's. And there's alots of spriters that have custom made sprites, if you consider sprite's that we're edited off Sonic, MegaMan ETC. There's some of my favorite spriter's even though some of them update rarely and some quit spriting, they were and still are awsome spriter's. Including CHamptim, Steve Cloud, Roranora Zoro and YoshiRyu.

I make all my sprites for my comic Life and Maybe Death of Ed, but they have the same style of Megaman.

Totally scratch sprites eh? Yeah, I've got some. They were initially made with the intent of putting them into an RPG Maker project, so techincally they ARE sprites instead of pixel art (though I have a bunch of that too).

Initially they were just 8-bit looking, cause I have very little skill with 16-bit spriting. However, a couple of my buddies over at MG were able to help me get the basics figured out. I'm still not the best spriter you've ever seen, but since my shit is totally custom, that is to be expected.

As for sprite comics, I still need to redo EMD!:SC with these. Odds are it probably won't take too long to make updates. I've already got shitloads of poses made, so it probably won't take me long to make any updates when I get around to working on my shit again.

Here's the basic results plastered on a rather shitty grassy background.

A future comic of mine, Adventures of PnKS, is going to have custom sprites drawn by me.

These are taking a while to make, so I only have a few sprites of one character. Here's a picture (still in development, of course)...

Ignore those eyes and the circle on the left there. Those are things I need to finish the sprites.

Well, why would you make a wholly original sprite that's essentially a recolor of a kirby sprite?

Recoloring sprites is BORING. No really, it's boring. It takes a while for me to do it.

Besides, I can draw up any pose I want, which saves the trouble of editing the sprite for the ideal occasion in the comic.

Well, I was just wondering why you just used the Kirby design. I mean, if you're going to make a new sprite, I'd think it'd be better to make a sprite of an original character.

QFT! If you must make a unique sprite, making your own design and a totally new character will put you far ahead of the rest of the spriters.

I'm going to add on to that, if you are going to make a sprite of an existing character, make it in a completely different or unique style.
