BEHIND THE MUSIC: Yesterday my mom came home from the manicurist. She displayed her nails to me, which had been coated in bright pink nail polish. "Pink, pink, I just love pink!" she exclaimed. "Ian, why don't you write me a song about pink?" (I was holding my guitar at the time.) So I picked up a simple chord progression I had come up with a couple days ago, set it to a sort of "I Want Candy" rhythm, and put some really duh-simple lyrics to it. Ten minutes later, I was done.

After she heard me perform it for the first time, my mom wanted a recording of it. So I mixed a rough cut on Audacity, and now, here it is. Don't expect much.

PS: My sister thinks I should make a whole concept album with each song representing a different color, and consisting of only one instrument and vocals. She already had a few suggestions for what would go where:

Brick red-- electric bass (?)
Orange-- ukulele
Yellow-- kazoo
Gold-- trumpet
Light green-- banjo
Blue-- tenor sax
Purple-- xylophone
Brown-- drums
Black-- electric guitar
White-- piano

And pink would be acoustic guitar, of course. She even had the idea for a song about the three primary colors-- red, yellow, and blue-- fighting each other, getting all mixed and stuff. My sister may be crazy, but she can have some pretty sharp ideas.

I think your association of the instruments to the colors is really interesting. I would usually think of dark blue with a bass, tenor sax would get orange, and mallets(marimba) would get red. But that's just me.

Can you play all of those different instruments?

I'm gonna try to learn! (Though I might get a bit of help. My sister's friend, "Meg Moo", has offered to play the cello for Red.)

Good Luck! I'm just starting to learn to play with four mallets, and it's taken me about 6 years to get this far. Not to say that you can't learn it though.

I love the Marimba. Not playing it but listening to it and watching it played. I've seen it played dexterously with 5 mallets at the same time in a live performance, I was blown away by that… I’ve seen two people play it at once live with more and I know you can use 6, but the gal with 5 was pretty amazing with them: moving them all independently, not just hitting spread notes at the same time.

Yeah, there's a special girp called the Musser Grip which lets you move the mallets more independently. It's a freaking hard girp to master, but I absolutely adore it. It makes playing easier for me.

That must have been one heck of a performance. It sounds like it was really cool!
