The other began to be aimed at a specific target audience... an audience that did not include me.

This makes me think twice about making any drastic changes to my own comic.

*cough*fat fetishes*cough*

Sorry about that really. Pleasantly Plump only updates on penis on Wednesdays Hawk. So its like I'm only sort of pandering to a specific audience.

Wait, didn't CYS get syndicated or something and therefore isn't online anymore? Is it still online? Where?

And what's wrong with it? I loved it when it was on DD. Did it become all serious and uncute after it left DD?

I'm with you on Count Your Sheep. It just lost its charm to me somewhere along the way...

I also stopped reading Wapsi Square. It used to be about this group of friends living their lives in a real life type scenario, now I don't know what the fuck is going on, theres like 14 new characters and weird theological/ psychological stuff going on, I just can't be bothered to keep up with it anymore.

He went to Keenspot years ago. His other comic, "No room for magic" (also formerly drunkducker) continued there as well

All the times I've dropped a comic off my reading list, the reason I remember is because of the plot. Usually because the creator had an interesting concept going but instead of taking it to its full potential, they'd use it as throwaway start to a cheesy romance story. A few of them also got too confusing for me to follow.

It definitely was a very sweet, innocent, and funny comic while here on DD in its early days... I kept up on it. Adis decided he wanted to focus in on one demographic, so he chose depressed mothers. Well lo and behold, I'm not a depressed mother, so it didn't seem to appeal to me much anymore.

Ah... so that strip with the mom standing over the grave of her husband was the beginning of the end, eh?

That's the exact point where I stopped reading, actually. I always pictured her as a single unmarried mom who got her daughter out of wedlock. There was no man in their lives, not even a ghost; there was a certain independence and honour in that. I was disappointed to learn that she was just another widow who was in love, and happy, and had her man and a happy family, and all that cliche.

Mostly why I give up on comics is months without updates or contact from the author on his/her page.

There's one exception to the rarely if ever updates scenario which probably everyone on DD knows about and causes no end of frustration and fascination. We won't go into that here as it tends to cause migraines, nausea, envy and threats of pain and mutilation...

On the other hand, if the story gets slow or frustrating, I'll walk away but I won't give up on it. I may un-fave it but I'll get curious later and come back to it. I came back to Emma recently after a little break and I was really happy with the latest updates.

I make extra effort to keep Due East updated at least once a week, even between story! Lately we've been doing a great round of fanarts and this week, I did a fun filler. I'm working on the new material but I don't want to alienate DE's audience or make them think we've lost interest in our little corner of DD. :)

I can tell you that, when I was updating every day, it was just too much work to respond to every single post, in addition to surviving my day-to-day life and finishing the next day's comic. I eventually got to the point where I felt awkard thanking some people yet not able to take the time to properly respond to every comment. It's a little worse to "play favorites" than to be a little aloof. Though for the most part I did try and answer any questions, but that's different than just someone saying "I like the second panel - 5". I don't see why your first assumption is that people think they're "too important." Just some people express grattitude in different ways than others.

I love getting positive comments on my comic, but I don't always respond because I can only think of so many ways to say "thanks!" Usually if people ask a question, I'll try to answer it.

Erm, yes, let me guess--a strip with a certain busty redhead who binge-eats?

I don't know how the author of that strip bears up under the weight of the heckling and nasty comments. I don't know how he stays so high in the rankings with no updates either---but said situation seems to inspire no end of envy and flame wars.

One of the main reasons I might give up on reading a particular comic is if the storyline loses appeal. Story is everything (even more than artwork), and when things start getting uninteresting/boring for me, I don't feel like reading anymore and I just move on.

I gotta say my biggest turnoff for a comic is lake of monkeys, or at least some kind of primate. Preferabbly german speaking. I know as a comic reader, like many of you I expect some kind of primate within the first 90 to 100 pages at least. I'd prefer earlier, but who wouldn't? I usually use that as my first cut off... =P Seriously, it has been the same reason as many of the other people posted here. Making a comic is hard, just gotta do it and learn as you go I think. =]

lol... Midge pointed this out to me, since the first primate in my comic showed up today... just short of the hundredth page :D And of course he'd speak German... since I do too.

I think the only times I stopped reading certain webcomics were when I'd realize it was too generic, and I'd already be reading ten others exactly like that one -- and then cutting down my reading list is just an issue of how much time I have at my disposal.

I've stopped reading several comics due to several reasons. One was that the creator once made very nasty comments about gay people and people who supported them, another was that the creator just thought they we'er all that, didn't update as much as it should, stopped updating, and stopped in a middle of a very good story arch, just to redo the whole story. @_@

The cigar smoking and highly foul tempered, Murder Monkey appears over in penis. I think he showed up once in new penis, and had few memorable appearances in old penis, but he's do to get a starring role sometime soon. I might go ahead and start using him on Saturdays, instead of doing superhero stuff like I have been. Although I do love to use superheroes.

Murder Monkey seems like the type of character that should appear on a weekday, as Weekends tend to attract fewer readers and less comments. Although maybe he will be popular enough to bring people around, who knows.

I'll look through the archives and see what I come up with. I don't think he speaks German, but he does deliver one liners. The question is that enough?

No. Bad German is a must, in order to attract readers who are Japanese.

yaarrrggg, I hate that. That was my main reason for every comic I stopped reading. I hate when readers are more interested in the story than the author is. That's one of the reasons I put so much energy in finishing my plot/script... knock on wood, though :D
