Yes, I did!
I grade a 1 rating when the comic really, really, really, really, really, REALLY BAD! Either it was a stupid sprite comic or a stupid gag comic that isn't funny! I haven't given a 1 to a story comic so no worries...
If the author is their just to be stupid, he gets the automatic 1... however, if the artist pushes him/herself to the limit with decent art and great storyline... he gets the automatic 5!

I haven't. Mostly because if I really don't like a comic that much, I just click away from it and never come back, lol. I think the lowest I've given is a 3 on a comic that I read regularly, and it was accompanied by a critique explaining why. =p

If I see another sprite comic which has put itself in the manga category, it's gonna get a 1 from me.

No. Two reasons:
1) Here as on dA and anywhere else, I don't give critiques unless they're asked for because there are too many people who can't handle criticism, and I'm really not out to hurt anyone's feelings and/or get into arguments over the merit of other people's creations.
2) Even if someone asks for it, if I really hate something so much that I'd give it a 1, I tend to just not say anything at all. Maybe it's because of the years I spent as a music reviewer wading through piles upon piles of crappy CDs, but I just don't have the energy anymore to spend my time talking extensively about things that I don't think have any merit.

Same here. I've clicked on a few comics that I really didn't like. But I figured that it was just my personal taste. And that other people might like the comic. So I clicked away and went in search of something I'd like.

No. If you were actually considering in your head whether you should give the comic a 1, then it probably completely sucked regardless what genre it is.

Nah. I don't give critique unless asked. If I have a tip/advice that's asked for, I'll comment with no rating. The comments are useful. The ratings are sort of pointless. Honestly, anyone who would actually pay attention to ratings and find them useful are not the comics that deserve 1's.
Besides, I hate grading things. I have a serious block against all forms of grading/rating after teaching. Man, I hated giving D's and F's except when the students deserved them -- and those are the ones that simply don't care at all and expect those F's anyway, so my efforts at grading were completely wasted.

That's just it though, I never get far enough into the thought process to consider it's ranking.
I just go "Woah, I don't like this." And move on.
It could be a 1. It could be a 2. It could just be a boring 3. It's just not something I'm going to keep clicking and continue reading. So I don't spend any time considering a ranking.

If a comic were so awful as to merit a 1, I probably just wouldn't bother to read it, never mind rate it. If a person is really putting in only a 1's worth of effort, I seriously doubt they'll bother to put in the effort to improve.

the rating system is quite arbitrary. Most of us wouldn't rate something, let alone read it, if it was garbage.

I have not given out a 1 before, though I have been tempted by a very strange comic that I totally didn't get with scribble-like 'artwork'. But I didn't because it seemed to me (after further inspection) that A) the artist wasn't a natural-born english speaker, so I wasn't going to hold that against them, and B) who am I to decide what art is terrible and what art is good. My comic is drawn on a dry-erase board for crying out loud :D
and c) I'm jsut too nice a guy to give out low numbers. I might be able to give out a 3 for something I hated or a 4 for something that was mediocre

I've been tempted to give a 1 lots of times, but decided against it, mostly because I don't even know how to help the author to improve, there are so much things that need improvement that I just decist unless he asks for crit.

Maybe once...I don't remember. I usually just give critics instead.
Though I usually don't give critics unless they're asked for either...but SOMETIMES, I get really brave/grumpy and give long crits to comics who I think really need it, because they are never improving at all.
But that's always a bad idea on my part, because I tend to choose comics that don't want it (unwillingly). I have been muted once because I did that. So if I ever do that again, it's only to people who ask for it or whom I know is fine with it.

If I was the ruler of the world, you know what I'd do for DD?
The "100 1's" rule:
Once a comic accumulates 100 1's from unique IPs, its account is automatically deleted from DD.
You can only give one 1 from an unique IP each day.
... I'm simply inspired after seeing the most beautiful gorgeous webcomic of all time (IMO) on SmackJeeves, then I thought about all the crap which has buried this gem and kept it in relative obscurity.

Smackjeeves is pretty bad. I remember everytime I started doing well on that site, I'd have some dickwad go through my entire archive and award me a 1 on every page.
I don't even remember if I've ever given a 1. I know I've goven 2's. Generally, if a comic is so bad as to warrant a 1, I usually leave before finishing a single page.

if I think something is really bad, I just don't rate it. giving a 1 is just basically a slap in the cyberface, you know? my goal isn't to hurt people's feelings. if there's something to critique, I will, but usually a simple "wtf?" will suffice.

No 1's yet, but I just gave a 2. The art was good, but the storytelling (visually) was weak. Also the writing had SO MANY holes in it that it drove me crazy. I'm tired of not making people accountable for their work.
Isn't that why we post? Sure, we want positive feedback, but aren't we therefore positioning ourselves for the opposite? If someone can't take criticism, IMO they should not post. Either that, or they should say with every post something to the effect of: "I'm just posting my book as an excercise in self-absorbant ego masturbation. I can't handle the truth, & don't really care what you think. Give me a "5", or go away".
Not that I run around giving harsh crits. 99% of the time, if I don't like a book, I just click past it without comment. I gave the "2" because the book was ganering some very positive response, despite it's horrendous execution. I'm floored by the crap my people consume as gourmet.
Later,
Chip

Same here...don't have a lot to add here, except that I'm not really sure the grading system here really serves any sort of purpose. I don't mean to offend anyone, but let's face it--we have our favorites, and so many here just give 5's every time with out giving it any thought, really. It's all a matter of opinion.
Personally I'd rather not be rated with a number system at all--peoples' comments are much more bneficial to me than the number...a lot of people stick a '5' up without saying anything, too...again, ot of politeness, I'm sure.
Just an opinion there.

Never given a 1. Honestly I haven't yet met a book with work so abysmal as to warrant that. However to even both posting anything (I almost always comment along with rating) the book must have already gripped my attention for some reason. If I see real effort, real improvement, intriguing dialogue or an appealing amalgam of all those, then I give a 5.
If it's lower than a 5 and I still want to comment, I don't rate. Unless it's a comic I read regularly, whereupon I may forget to rate and not bother posting the rating afterwards :P

I havn't, and don't plan to. Sorry, ranking system like that imo is kinda lame, it is never going to be used correctly, and if it is, you can't help but feel bad when you see any number other than 5 on your comic. I mean, as an artist, you SHOULD have a skin of stone. But we're peopl etoo. We have feelings. I don't give 'ones', I give advice.

I tend to give a lot of 5's because if there's something I like enough about the comic to hold my attention then it's worth a 5 to me. If not I just leave. No use giving bad ratings. I'd much rather try to help them by giving constructive crits.

I rarely give out 1's, but when I do, your comic must really SUCK. Either it's a sprite comic gone WRONG, it has a bad plot, the characters contradict themselves too much (unless it's for comedic value) and the quality is poor.

I think I gave a 1 just one time. I can't remember who I did it to, but I think it was necessary. The lowest I usually give now is about a 3.
I think I got a 1 once... think it's because someone didn't get the joke.

I never give a 1 because I'm a wuss and I'm affraid people will think that I'm evil. No one gives a 1-rating. Everyone gives a 5 whenever they quite liked something. Nothing on this site deserves to get an 1 (from the stuff that I have seen), but not everything should get a 5 either. But if everyone's doing it I hate to be the one who doesn't. Like I said I just don't dare to do that. And I don't think I'm the only one that feels that way.
