FREE STUFF!!!!
Sure, the portal thing is only a demo, but you also get HL2 deathmatch for free. While HL2:DM may not be the greatest multiplayer game, although it's certainly entertaining, this should allow you to download source mods, and that provides an unlimited amount of awesome.
Make sure you download mods off of third party sites.

Also, in case you were wondering, Steam is a free service. (Quite a few people I know thought it was a pay thing.)

I have Steam, but I don't like their limited variety of games. I understand it's a relatively new program by Valve, so hopefully they're working on that aspect.

Yeah, I guess it's just filled with FPSs RTSs and a few RPGs, but I'm sure there's more to come. (Juiced 2 was on there.)There really hasn't been much variety in PC games to begin with.

I really like Steam. It's kind of buggy, but it does allow me to put my games on multiple computers, which is really cool. I can play Team Fortress 2 at home and at work during lunch, and it's not the least bit illegal.
