The hardest games ever, the games that make you yell out "Damn it to Hell" or that make you resort to cheats. Which are they?
For me, I can only think of five on the top of my head, they are:
Stuntman: Dear God, never have I expressed much anger on the first level. I didn't care if I did the scene excellent, as long as I passed the current scene I was happy, that is, until the next scene, which would piss me off more.
Crazy Taxi: The game itself was not hard, rather the Crazy Box (or Crazy Pyramid in Taxi 2) Which would teach you the basic skills of Crazy Taxi in a series of short mini games. In the purest sense of everything, the Crazy Box was the work of something evil.
The Hitman series: It teaches you to save often, 'nuff said.
SWAT 3: Realism, great level design, all around great first person shooter. Screw up one of your mission objectives, and you screw up the entire mission. Not to mention the way a few gun shots can take you down.
Flight Simulator: If you have no idea how to fly a plane, either learn, or just uninstall the game. If you choose to learn, be prepared.

Any old NES game.
When I was a kid I didn't think they were so hard, but I try and play them now and I just fail completely. Marble Madness? No. A Boy and His Blob? haha, right. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? Get lost!

Final Fantasies I-VIII (i've never played IX). I've played all of them, i've completed none of them! it takes me years just to get to some of the early-on bosses (literally, i never completed the first disk on FFVII or FFVIII). Guides didn't help me, when i finally get to say, the 4th or 5th boss, no matter how good a guide i'm using, no matter how high my characters' level is, i can't beat them
*slaps final fantasies 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 with stupidly hard game stickers*
please note: i'm british and therefore i'm referring to the euro-asian series. Not the american series which has less games.

Strikers 1945 series. Seriously, how the hell do you beat that game without dying?

Battle Toads.
I was really awesome at that game actually, I could even beat the speeder bike level. It was tons of memorization and behavioral conditioning though. :)
Another game I can't play for crap now. The music still haunts me.

I beat the game once; series of level warps and just overall dumb luck. It wasn't as satisfying as I thought it would be.

My vote also goes to Battletoads. It's the difficulty alone that turned a bright and original game into something awful. Utilizing warps I could get to the last level and halfway finish it. It's probably the angriest I've ever gotten over a videogame. Eventually I swallowed my pride and used the Game Genie to beat it. The ending does not justify all that pain.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts.
Last year my friend Rajiv and I played the hell out of that game, and we could get up to the level tat all bone and stuff, that turns upside and whatnot, but we could never beat the game, ever.
Also, Contra. It's probably just me, but I'm horrible at it. Back at school we even made Contra: Jill Edition - you put in the 99 lives codes on 2 player mode. You and your friend (who are drunk) play until one of you decided not to, and hands it over to me (not drunk) and I will not only use up all of your 99 lives, but steal the other player's too...
I suck at Contra.

ICO.
For shit's sake I cannot make any progress in that game, I beat the hell out of shadows, using a stick, mind you, leave the princess for some-odd three hours trying to find a vauge clue.
And while we're on that record Shadow of Colossus. Fun game, but I'm stuck on the giant. @_@ though the stabbing is kinda easy.

Rai-Den, or any of those other games where you have like one fighter jet which gets multiple add-on weapons, but still get plastered by some boss fight no matter how much of the entire screen you take up with missle and bombs,

Ridiculously hard games I was awesome at:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(NES): Never met anyone besides me who's actually beaten this game straight up, most people never got by the seaweed level.
Jet Moto(PS1): Spent an entire summer playing this one. I could take on almost every double black diamond course.

I could beat the game without even getting hurt until you fought the technodrome at the end. Mostly you use Donatello because he can hit from farther away. :) I think Michaelangelo you had to use for the faster flying enemies or something. Also I'm sure a lot of it was memorization about where enemies came from and how many there were. (That seaweed level was hard too... I had forgotten all about it. It electrocuted you!)
That was when I was like... 11 or 12 though. And obsessed with video games.

Trauma Center for DS is pretty dang hard. It feels like sometimes you can only successfully complete a level out of fluke accident. The previous owner of my DS cartrige didn't even get very far.
Are you serious?!
I only ever got as far as the giant mouser. Heaven help you if you ever lose Donatello.

I've played many many games in my lifetime. Some of the games mentioned here were tough, but playable.
Anyone ever play deadly towers?
Give it a try sometime.
If you don't get killed by monsters themselves, you will die by falling into a pit because you get pushed back when you get hit by a creature.
Otherwise, you may step in the wrong spot and get wisked away to some sort of nether realm where all the cretures are much tougher.
Some monsters start doing damage to you as soon as you enter the room(a sort of game bug)
Some monsters just deal whackloads of damage.
All that and I never ever managed to get a bell..
As far as TMNT goes, are you talking the Konami one?
Yeah, dang that was tough but I did manage to beat it once, then I tossed the cart far far away.

I've heard that Ninja Gaiden is unreasonibly difficult, but I haven't played it for exactly that reason. I think out of all the games I've played, the hardest was Jak 2. Man, they really didn't give you any more time than was humanly possible to complete missions in that game. Regardless, the game still rocked.

Ninja Gaiden was far from being unreasonably hard. As difficult as it may be, it is NEVER cheap. If you die in Ninja Gaiden, it's cause you fucked up, NOT because the game screwed you over.

On the other hand, whether or not botches are the player's fault has nothing to do with whether or not the game is difficult. I mean, a game can be well designed but have a very high learning curve, and thus be very difficult for most people. Though this does bring up an interesting point. Seems like there's two kinds of difficult games out there- those that are difficult by design, and those that are difficult because of lack of design. ;D

Yes it does. If a game is like Enclave, it will kill you without warning and WILL NOT give you a chance to survive. If it is like Ninja Gaiden, you will ALWAYS have a way to counter whatever is being thrown at you and come out unscathed.

I'm saying that even if a game warns you, the task can still be difficult. Hence making a difficult game. Sure, it's the player's fault, as it were, for not being skilled enough or aware enough, but that doesn't mean that doing whatever it is you need to do isn't extremely difficult. I can't say much about Ninja Gaiden in particular, as I haven't played it. Watching it sort of turned me off for a variety of reasons. Just not up my alley, I think.
