I thought i'd put together a list of manga i think fans and non-fans alike can enjoy.
I'll try to pick different genre's along with avoiding ones that rely on wapanese in jokes and chibified weirdness scenes(god i hate that)
*I'll be using online manga readers as the links, you can use the arrow keys to turn pages or click the image.

REAL

drama/psychological
A serious take on wheelchair basketball with a surprisingly deep and well paced story. The art style is from the maker of vagabond and very detailed/realistic.

Bakuman

school life/slice-of-life
Manga about making manga! Great execution and art style along with an educational factor of how a mangaka comes to be in japan.

1/3 boyfriend

romance/school life
Shoujo one-shot with a nice twist, very heartwarming.

Claymore

fantasy/ action
Original plot with many twists, turns, and surprises make this an addicting series to read through. Art in the beginning is somewhat wonky but that evens out soon.

Elfen Lied

Horror/Mature/Supernatural/Tragedy
"The story involves human mutations called "dicloniuses", who grow horns on their heads and possess telekinetic powers. The tendency for violence among dicloniuses varies among characters. Certain scientists contain them in a Facility in cells where they are subject to inhumane experiments to test their abilities or were they await execution for being too dangerous." Disturbing story with offputting and cheesy anime art.

Nana

drama/romance/comedy
"Nana Komatsu is a young girl looking for love and a halfway decent career in the big city. Nana Osaki is a rock and roll singer on the rise. With stylish art and sophisticated storylines Nana follows the interwined lives and loves of these two young women."

Death Note

Mystery/drama/psychological
Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects--and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook in which Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies.
imo the beginning of death note is 10x better than the anime but the later half of the anime becomes better.

High school Debut

comedy/drama/romance
"Since she never paid any attention to fashion or trend in middle school she has no idea how to go about attracting her yet-to-be-found love. But a chance encounter with with Yoh Komiyama provides her with the opportunity she needs. If he coaches her in how to become attractive, surely she can find herself a boyfriend!" I haven't actually read past the first 3 chapters but apparently it's good.

Othello

"Hard-rocking, butt-kicking Nana is just the girl to grab hold of Yaya's timid demeanor and turn it upside down. Nana exposes Yaya's "friends" as slime bags, doles out punishment, and does it all with style." I usually dislike manga like this but this one was really interesting.

Spice and Wolf

Economics and a 250 year old pagan wolf diety girl? Actually pretty cool, be warned lots of nudity from the girl.

Monster

"Monster weaves the riveting story of brilliant Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a famous surgeon with a promising career at a leading hospital. Tenma risks his reputation and promising career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unbeknownst to him, this child is destined for a terrible fate." Haven't read it but i've heard nothing but great things about this manga.

White Clouds

"Told from a rather unusual perspective, award-winning White Clouds is a beautiful and touching story about life, death and the heartening belief that we all will arrive at the same place when our time has come." ;-;

Phew, well then...have any suggestions of your own to add? :) (inb4 bleach/one piece/naruto)

I'm not a manga/anime fan, but I have every volume of Case Closed (Detective Conan in Japan). It's a whodunnit series set in the real world Japan (not fantasy or sci-fi). It really appeals to fans of any classic murder mysteries like Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. It has a lot of adventure elements and nothing too severe. (The anime series based on the manga has been running for over 10 years in Japan.)

Oh, and no chibis or anything silly like that. Plus the cases are pretty well self-contained (and solvable), so it's not a crazy run-on series for the most part. (There is an overall plot, but it is more of just a premise/frame for the murder mysteries.)

Good Manga is an oxymoron.

HA HA, I kid. But seriously now, manga and anime in it's current state makes me embarassed to like either. Subjectively I think all the comics in your list blow, or rock up to some point (Claymore, Death Note), and then go south after a certain point (Raki being a whiney bitch, L dying).

The rest of these are just for girls. Little girls. Dont get me wrong, i like little girls

But I digress, something needs to be done or your list will go down in history as THE LIST of "good" manga on DrunkDuck. Not that's it's really a BAD list, but it's lacking balls. Lets be honest.

LETS GET MANLY IN THIS THREAD

LETS GROW SOME FUCKING BALLS

BERSERK:

God damn just look at this comic. This is the story about a guy who's fucking NAME is "Guts". He's born from a dead woman. The story at it's roots starts out with the main character just punching out the womb while screaming "hey fuck you mom!" And what happens after that? Oh not much besides sheer fucking chaos.

In addition to killing little babbys, Guts has rode through a God made of thunder JUST BECAUSE HE COULD, and rapes his mentally retarded girlfriend because rape feels fantastic (I am not making any of this up).

AKIRA:

Holy shit where to begin. It's the future right? And world war fucking three has just rocked everyone's shit so bad that most of "modern" society is a bunch of depraved lunatics. The main character is a depraved lunatic who has a friend who is not only even MORE of a depraved lunatic, but a depraved lunatic that can crush people's heads with. his. mind.

Said character also rapes his girlfriend.

BATTLE ROYAL:

Japan and it's craaaaazy ass goverment decides to run a bit of population control by making a bunch of sexed up high schoolers fight to the death. Oh and if they dont their heads blow up. Main conductor of this comic even rapes the woman who runs the orphanage that most of the characters came from.

Women are objects.
(for the record the above picture was the most tame thing I could find from the comic, it's two lesbians getting shot to death)

HELLSING (as submitted by Tatermysalad69):

"Its about this super rad vampire and he kills dudes and turns into smog and shit."

Blame!: The series ended a few months ago, but for sake of the art, is worth looking at. Drawn in a moody heavy handed black and white, an android-ish and often tactiturn man named Killy explores the oppressive bowels of a cyber dungeon. The art is really unique, possibly the best meshing of gothic sensibilities with modern manga and bleak sci-fi styles. Storywise, I can't actually commend it. There is extremely little talking to be had and for the most part, the plot is hard to follow as a whole. I found it easier to read in a more episodic, book by book sense. There's a lot of action to be had, but the artist tends to overkill on aggressive lines. It's easier to piece things together as a whole than panel by panel. While I wouldn't normally recommend something like this based on the difficulty alone, it takes a lot to completely impress me with just illustration. I think there's a total of 10 or 11 volumes.

The Last Man: Not to be confused with 'Y the Last Man'. This is an obscure series made by the creator of The Golden Boy. To my knowledge, the series has never been translated into English or largely imported to the States, but a few copies might be located. The Last Man is a dark hearted series, sometimes very adult themed and ultra violent in a way that would make Fist of the North Star blush. The creator really establishes a tense, desperate and frequently terrifying yet modern environment with no hint of the possible hell to break loose at a moment's notice. The artistic style might not be for everyone. Characters often have odd akimbo posed bodies and break into heavy fear sweats. But it is pretty unique horror.

Uzumaki: A fantastic 3 part series by horror master Junji Ito, Uzumaki can currently be found on manga bookshelves. Uzumaki is completely surrealist. The evil is oppressive, omnipresent, and completely faceless. Regular people are trapped in a small coastal town, and do their best to escape or hide from it while the evil wildly corrupts EVERYTHING around, isolating them. Literally, Uzumaki is about a town being terrorized by the abstract of a spiral. Its as strange as it sounds and I've never seen anything like it, but it winds up being incredibly effective. Uzumaki, by the conclusion, offers few direct answers and leaves the reader to simply wonder about the madness of the unknown. Lovecraft could take notes ('yeah I said it, wanna fight about it?'). Uzumaki also features a few side comics the author has made in the theme of the series (surrealist horror). Avoid the live action movie, it has nothing to do with anything and was completed while the manga was still being made, supposedly.

Portus: Similar in the inexplicable madness vein of Uzumaki, Portus is a one shot about an obsessing haunted video game that winds up taking lives of a few certain players. A young woman tries to figure out the mystery behind it, but winds up getting too involved. It's a decent horror read and aptly carries what otherwise sounds like a silly idea for terror.

Ghosttalker's Daydream: Not for kids like most of these. A sexy magazine dominatrix by night but a medium for spirits by commission, the disenfranchised heroine is sought by authorities and common folk to help them navigate the deathly demands of a Japan well infested with ghosts of suicide and murder victims. While not the most explicit thing despite the content, it is very adult and focus is equal on the main heroine's work in the adult industry and ghost hunting. And despite her position of power and indifference, her internal monologues show a sad person unable to actually get what she wants in life and instead becomes jaded for it. I think that characterization really sells this one that extra step beyond just another quasi-horror/exploitation serial. There's about three volumes available right now. The anime is decent, but breezes over most of the plot lines.

Kurohime: A world famous gunslinger witch challenges the gods and fails is reduced to a childish peon-like semblance of her former self. While various loved or hated by the world's populace, a boy she once saved grows up to find her and return a life favor. While Kurohime is haughty and believes men are dogs to be controlled, the young man reminds her of her own heart, and in doing so, helps her break the curse she suffers from. Alas, the young man dies saving Kurohime and in doing so, helps her remember what genuine love means. Now Kurohime has embarked on a practically suicidal quest to again challenge the corrupt gods and save the young man's soul from them. This is a sexy action series, but has a lot of focus on the nature of love, devotion, and sacrifice. There's a lot of ongoing situational comedy too, making the series variously light hearted and intense. There is a LOT of characterization throughout the story and not just with the main character. Kurohime's a fun read, and is currently up to 11 volumes.

Muhyo and Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation: One of my favorite series. An adventurous story of two completely mismatched practitioners of magic law (re: kind of like a lawyer crossed with a wizard) that for hire, protect common people from hauntings and ghosts. The series gives a lot of bang for the buck with frequently likable characters, unique designs, and a solid evolving storyline. Very funny stuff. Going on 10 volumes shortly.

Death Note: Great series, you're probably familiar with it. Probably should have ended midway (as Lefarce mentions about L), but the final ending is admittedly very good, just not the build up leading to it after the mid story climax. Very sharp art.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

I'm into shoujo.

Skip-Beat- I've read about 17 volumes and managed to get past the hideous art-- it's that funny. It's about a girl whose boyfriend used & abused her, and dumped her out on the street. She decides to exact revenge by... becoming a famous actress. The awesome part is how her anger, hate and mistrust of all men makes her isolate herself... and how often she fails (usually in "make it big" comics, they're big by volume 2.)

S*A- sad, heartwarming... a little like Kare Kano, but with more of a punch. It's about a girl named Hikari who is always number 2 to her rival, a supergenius named Takishima. She always fails, but she always tries again. And they're in love, although she's too focused on winning to notice. The side-characters really give the comic life, though-- Yahiro & Akira especially.

Godchild/The Cain Saga- Depressing, depressing, depressing. Also sick, twisted, and often comically unbelievable. But if you like Victorian-style mysteries, incest (it's by Kaori Yuki after all... but it doesn't glorify it!), murder, man-love, intrigue and black magic... well there ya go.

FMA- at the risk of sounding cliche.

Only The Ring Finger Knows- Shounen-ai (sorry). Pretty depressing one-shot (with a happy ending!) about boys in love in high school.

Gravitation- One of the best things I have ever read, including love letters to me & groundbreaking novels. Screwed-up romance.

hm, can't think of many more off the top of my head.

City Hunter

In my opinion the best comic of all time, in Japan's opinion one of the best 80's comics. It has it all: action, adventure, romance, and cheap sex jokes! It's about a sweeper (who's basically an assassin that does any job he gets) named Ryo Saeba who lives in Shinjuku, Japan. Tons of action in the middle of Tokyo that is so well drawn!!! (and this happens to be what the hammer in my icon references to).

Boys Over Flowers (Hana Yori Dango)

Best Shojo (in my opinion). I think the reason for its success is that it takes every girly fantasy you've ever had and puts it into one 30 something volume series. Especially if you love the poor girl loves a super hot rich guy type of Cinderella story, you can't miss this.

Hot Gimmick

Don't know how I got into this, but I did, usual "one girl is loved by so many guys, what should she do!" comic but is executed very well and is really cute and funny! The main guy (Ryoki) is also really hot in his bossy way, def an original character for a cutsy shojo.

Eyeshield 21

The only sport comic I've ever liked (football to be exact). I love the art and the jokes never get old. I also think it portrays high school friendship very well. Also always gives a good laugh! Highly recommend it!

One Piece

My first Shonen Manga. The only comic I've ever read that can leave me crying my eyes out and laughing out loud all in one chapter. The messages about friendship in the series are truly touching. The story is about a boy named Luffy who sets off to become the Pirate King. Sounds silly but it's really good! Oh and if you've seen the anime and it turned you off, please don't treat it the same, the manga is so different! Just give it a try ;)

I hear you on this one. Hot Gimmick is a really awesome manga. I think the reason that it works even though it falls into that terrible "so many guys, so little time!" shoujo trope is because the girl is just about tortured by Ryoki (and also by childhood-friend-guy, I forget his name), and sacrifices her own well-being to protect her sister's reputation. She's such a martyr that it makes the "everyone loves me!" thing less annoying.

Also, Papillon is good. I've only read 2 volumes, and volume 2 was drastically worse than volume 1 (not enough moping), but it's about a nerdy girl whose beautiful twin sister systematically destroys her life.

I don't have some sample pictures but last week I read all 59 chapters of
Soul Eater
It's about death god kids and their human partners that turn into their weapons. What I like about it is how amazingly well the writer evens out the strengths and weaknesses of the characters (compared to how bad Naruto does it). The girl characters hold their own and there's even characters of color relevant to the plot.

Is the Full Metal Alchemist manga in there? I like it more than the anime. It keeps it's mix of humor and drama well balanced.

Well, I'm not much into Manga anymore. But back when I was, I pretty much read all of the popular ones.

One Piece, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Air Gear (I still kind of like it)
Afro Samurai is good. Not sure if it counts as manga, but I still DO like it. It's really different. I love it actually. :)

I tried reading Dragonball, it's decent, but I wouldn't go out and buy all the 48 or so volumes (including Z)

And I tried reading this one called Dragon Drive. I hated it.
And Buso Renkin, which was kinda lame.

You ever notice that most manga rely on the same thing? Not all manga, but like, it's always about some big quest, like "Collect the 7 mighty midgets! And save the world!" kinda thing.
Oh, and Alchemy. Way too much alchemy.

But I've only heard of like, 2 or 3 of the manga on your list Skullbie. I may have to check them out.

Beserk looks cool as hell though.

what? no OSAMU TEZUKA on the list?

To be honest I read only two volumes of this so far (I either can't find or afford the rest, depending when/where I'm searching). But what I read so far was pretty damn good. It's cartoony, it's funny, it's shocking, it's thought provoking. Simple yet very rich.

And from what I know nearly anything by Tezuka is worth attention.

And Aurora Borealis, of course Osamu Tezuka must be mentioned! He is pretty much the creator of manga! lol. They're doing an Osamu Tezuka exhibition here soon, I am so psyched!

Speaking of balls, take a look at Bastard!!
Sorry , no picture, I'm not sure how to upload images here.
Anyway, Bastard!! (Yes, the exclamation marks are part of the title, not unusual in manga, actually) is a story by Kasushi Hagiwara about an evil sorcerer called Dark Schneider, that was sealed in the body of a young, innocent boy, but has to be summoned back into action to save a kingdom. Problem is, he is only interested in saving the girl that protects the boy, the kingdom be damned.
It has sex, violence, half-naked girls, sometimes fully naked girls, demons, magic, you know, the works. It is also full of heavy metal references, because the author is a big fan. So, the kingdom Dark Schneider is supposed to save is called Metallicana, the main villain is called Anthrax and there are actually spells called Guns N' Roses and Deff Leppard.
Nothing to be taken seriously (this is no Ghost in the Shell) but a fun, fast, immature and testosterone-laden romp. The art starts out O.K. but becomes pretty impressive in the later chapters.

As mentioned above, Tazuka's Buddah and the manga Old Boy are awesome awesome work.

I really like either old school Manga or fucked up manga.

Here are my recommendations:

Nausicaa of The Valley of the Wind: Yes the movie was great but it only showed a glimps of the 6 volume manga which is phenomenal. It is an older manga but the unique concepts and imaginations of Miyazaki of such a complex and comprehensive fantasy world. Miyazaki proves that he is the greatest concept artist with this piece of work.

Battle Angel Anita: Beautiful beautiful drawings, paneling along with wonderful world creation, one of the best character developments and striking action. I love the look of this comic because sometimes the drawings would take on a European, almost moebius-ish type of inking. However, the comic does take a turn for the worse starting around volume 7, so just read up to volume 6 and you can discontinue.

20th Century Boys: I am not one that enjoys horror or suspense manga but 20th century boys is not your conventional horror suspense manga. It has no monsters or anything gruelsome. Yet it scares the shit out of you through its story and story telling. It has one of the most fucked up stories and you never know what is really going on. It's can be confusing but in a good way.

Homunculus: One of the most fucked up but imaginative comics ever. Not a very popular one because it's pretty adult. It's about a guy who's abandoned his old life as a wealthy but corrupted banker and starts living with the homeless community. One day he was approached by this pseudo-scientist to perform an experiment on him. The experiment is to see the effects of drilling a hole in his skull. He hypothesizes that by doing so it will increase the space of which the brain can take up and therefore may allow more capacities of the brain to function. After the experiment, the main character begins to see things. He begins to see people more strangely. However, it doesn't seem to be hallucinations because what he sees seem to be metaphors for people's psychological state.

Abandon the Old in Toyko: Not many people know of this one. You might be able to find it in your library. That's where I found it. It is a really old manga that has jsut been printed in english by fantagraphics. It is a collection of short stories about the lives of the poor during the 70's when Tokyo underwent rampant economic growth. The stories are shocking, depressing, beautiful and very well told. It's a very quick read but so much depth.

Yeah. They all ARE Shonen Jump comics. Well, except for Afro Samurai, and Air Gear. Which of both I like. OH! And I like the Street Fighter Manga that Udon translates. The comic books are good too, but we're talkin about manga.

Well, it's kind of hard to say exactly what I'm into. Because I have a lot of different tastes.
I like art that's kinda dark, yet maybe detailed. Afro Samurai is a perfect example. It has tons of shading, and even uses red for blood.

Stories, well, recommend me something that maybe has a lot of action, but maybe interesting characters.

Monster is one of the few good manga in a sea of merchandising, and is maybe my favorite pick right now, it's creator sure knows a lot about politics, places and psychological archetypes.

Bakuman is pretty good, putting aside all the drama and the protagonist's luck, it's pretty informative (not that i don't enjoy the drama).

Bokurano; it's weird, unusual and depressive, pretty good on it's own.

Ive been a little bit disconected of the Manga enviroment (catching up with my DC Comics readings...), but I REALLY enjoyed this:

I"s: A beautiful school girl, a young boy with a huge crush and almost no confidence...do the math...I loved the art...

Densha Otoko: A young Otaku saves a girl from a drunk guy in the subway. She sends him a tea set as thanks gift and the Otaku ask for help in a web forum to go out with her. Suposedly based on a true story...This and I"s are almost the only romantic manga(or stories in general) that I can say that I loved...The TV drama is also good:

Petshop of Horrors: A petshop that sells exotic pets for very special customers. Every pet comes with a 3 clauses contract. If any of this clauses are broken by the owner, consequences are not quite pleasent.

Genshiken: A group of Otakus obsessed enough to be mocked by their College's Manga and Anime Club. IMO, one of the best comics (American, Japanese or European) I ever readed.

As do I, now that I think about it. Nick I think we must take it upon ourselves to balls up this thread since everyone keeps posting comics for little girls (oooh ohhh, I love little girls yeah~)

By the way, NickGuy, the Densha Otoko artist is Hidenori Hara.

Now, if you want more ballsy mangas:

Hokuto no Ken aka Fist Of the North Star

Basilisk:

i know one piece was already mentioned, but i think it deserves a re-post since the other pic was from the ANIME!!

also blade of the immortal. you dont get more ballsy than getting your shit hacked up on purpose, knowing you can just heal it anyway.

also, regardless of whether youe a star wars fan or not, if youre a manga fan id highly recommend picking up the star wars manga...all the battles and stuff are presented in such a unique visual way....and the lightsaber fights are AWESOME

for people who like superheroes presented manga style, Marvel's Snikt! was a pretty good wolverine

and the street figther manga RYU FINAL was pretty fucking brutal for a manga based n a video game.

manga

Wow. Now THIS is what I'm talking about.
I only have the first Ryu Final, but seriously, it IS great.

The Wolverine manga you mentioned looked pretty sweet as well.

And I'll have to check out the Star Wars manga, it'll be kind of hard for me to get used to all the characters with the big ol' anime eyes, but I'm sure I can do it.

Muhyo and Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation (BSI)

This manga, and the one listed below are the greatest comics since Death Note.

Honey and Clover.

Honey and Clover is a story about a group of students at an art college and their complex relationships. It's also the most amazing and heartwarming manga you will ever read, ever.

The characters are all deep and interesting. And the way Chica Umino tells the story is perfect. The funny moments are genuinely funny, the sad moments are genuinely sad and it's just absolutely beautiful and bittersweet. THIS is what shojo should be. All of the beauty, drama and humor of some other comics (cougheverythingelseinShojoBeatcough) without the lame cliches.

...also, I just thought it was worth mentioning that this is the first manga that has ever actually reduced me to tears. In the first volume, no less.
