I currently draw in Photoshop, but am considering trying to start using GIMP.
Which is better for drawing (not editing)?

Really!
Not the response I was expecting.
Actually, I've been trying out Open Canvas, and combined with PS, I really like it.

People only use GIMP because it's free, and most people think that free = better in general. If you have Photoshop already, switching to GIMP is a bloody stupid thing to do.

What do you have to say about Open Canvas, then?
Nothing, I've never used it.

I had photoshop for the longest time and it never worked properly on my computer. Ever. It froze and erased all my work when I pressed save and wouldn't open half the time.
For me The Gimp was a better choice. The gimp is not straightforward, unfortunately, and most people pass off having to practice something as being "useless" just because it isn't easy at first. But you know, that's what internet help files are for.

Gimp is good but it's a challenge. Photoshop is NOT an art program, it's a photo-editing and graphic art tool that artists have adapted, mainly because it has SO much potential and it's powerful. Gimp is a free alternative of THAT. No wonder it's technical and hard! It has almost as much power and ability though.
Gimp is ok, I could see its potential, but Photoshop already did what I needed and I was too set in my ways to change.
Artists should probably be much more into Open Canvas and similar artist type programs. There's one by Maya and Corel and others too. Photoshop (and probably Gimp as well) can be worked around to do pretty much anything those programs can do, but it takes some learning, practise and figuring, whereas those art centred programs come pre-configured out of the box.

I've used Open Canvas. It is by far one of the best application for coloring but not recommended if you want to do coloring on huge images that take up memory size. So, it's best to stick to photoshop since it's one of the most reliable graphic program that every comic artists use. Besides, there are more functions that photoshop can do compared to Open Canvas.
