Getting Noticed on Deviant Art

I've been there for about a month. I comment. A lot. Is my stuff just terrible, or there is there another reason that I haven't be noticed at all on DeviantArt?

magickmakerNo idea. Make friends with people who're into similar things and they may favourite your work which will increase your views...

I dunno. The only reason I set up my own gallery there was to comment on my friends art pages... I never really liked the Dev art set-up much.

DeviantArt is basically a huge artist popularity contest. You could have crappy generic art, but everyone will love you cause you talk about Naruto a lot. Most people there get ignored, while a few people hog all the comments cause they draw obvious fan service or naked chicks. I pretty much only use that place to post art. I don't get involved in the community.
EDIT: I just looked at your gallery and you only have two things. Generally that will not get you much attention at all. Just post more and as long as you steadily get better at what you do, you'll get more noticed.

Getting popular isn't really a good reason to get into DA, just do it for fun and don't think about things such as page views or favorites, it's silly to be like that, it's about making new friends and sharing art with people.

You know, I still find it weird when people I don't know comment on my stuff there, seeing as how amazingly inactive I am. Sometimes it's nice to show of a new bit of work, or some old piece of crap I wouldn't show anywhere else, but for me it's just a way to keep in touch with artists who have moved on from elsewhere. Funnily they always keep their Dev Art galleries.
Dev art always struck me as being a poorly constructed messageboard/database-front-end interface thing… It’s really just a gigantic forum, with an art focus. It took the social aspect of pioneering galleries like Elfwood and blew that up as a way to make money, minimising the art aspect.
That’s not a bad thing though. It’s a lot more open to different styles than a lot of the earlier galleries, which tended to specialise (only Fantasy, SciFi, Anime, Erotica, Photography etc.), and it’s very open to a lot of different subject matter and approaches. The social side it a bit too all pervading though and the site design and navigation means it can take two or three steps to see full size art- in my book that makes it a bit shitty as an art site.

I heartily agree. Sometimes it's ridiculous how hard it is to simply browse through someone's gallery. The site says there's some new "Version 5.0!" coming out, but I seriously doubt it will improve things much.

DA sucks. >_> I only use it to keep track of my favourite artists. I've been in there for like 3 years now and still, nobody cares. Im just happy to be danish and have tegnebordet.dk. It's probably the best artsite on the entire web and trust me, I've tried a lot >__< Just too bad it's in danish..

I hate DA, and mainly because it's slow even on a cable connection. it lags as hell.
I'm on hitatus while I redo one of my webcomics. Be sure to check it out when I'n done! :)

i like da, it might be hard to get noticed, but theres a lot of great art there.
and if you want to get noticed try making threads on the thumbshare forum saying something like:
comment on me and ill comment on you
or something in that fasion..

I dont really care about the DA community, I just find it a good place to post art and finding lots of great artists, including quite a few that are professionally working in the comic world

I completely agree with Stardusty.
On a side note, I was never really too keep on dA, even before I joined, so I tried an experiment. I was going to simply put up art and NEVER promote my gallery. So far it actually HAS garnered attention, just not a whole ton. I have 120 deviations and about 3200 page views.
Now if I started doing art of pop culture stuff like Harry Potter or Naruto I think things would change. Some people will favorite art just because it's ABOUT something they like.
Also, if I started doing art for bizarre fetishes (like inflating women?!) it would probably start raking in those pageviews. You see stuff like that in Today's Favorites all the time for some reason.
My advice is to just use dA to store art and get feedback, not get noticed. You'll always be overshadowed by those Michelle84's... and if you actually do get really good AND popular, your art will be ripped off like you wouldn't believe.

dA is a bit of a mess. The concept is a good idea, but it's gotten way too overblown. I was thinking of setting up my own art site that supports hotlinking and all but I don't think I'll get enough support or interest. At the moment I'd suggest just setting up your own gallery software on a host of some kind. Even a blogspot blog is a better place to post your art!
if you set up your own art site, I'd be sure to join too. ^_^
as long as it isn't set up like Y!gallery.. where artists have the ablity to customize thier own "guilds" where they have it set up for speific forms of art that people could join in and share thier owns..
while that idea isn't so bad, it's just how they set up the graphics for thier guilds.. horrible layouts and backgrounds at times! *shudders* sometimes rendering the text and links unreadable..

"Don't worry, I'm a web designer.":D
But that's great, Ms Moon. I may just look into coding it. If I manage to nab a domain and some web space, hey, maybe people'll join! I don't want it to become a massive over-inflated thing like dA though, but it'll have some similarities. Now I just need a name......
THE BEAUTIFUL WAREHOUSE.
Manufacturing and storing fine quality images since 2006.
(It's kind of a conceptual thing, contrasting the high-art aesthetic qualities of "beauty" with the much more utilitarian connotations of a "warehouse", but at least it's original. And it lends itself to some great ideas for site design...)

BWare.com?
A-haaaa.
No, but seriously, minimalistic site design is good. Something in a range of blue-greys, with some dusty rose pink added. ...If you need help with creating logos or graphics or whatever, I'll be glad to help out.

Sample logo for BWare:
Not that we have to go with this or anything. I'm just running it up the flag pole and seeing who salutes.

That is an awesome concept logo! I'm not too Keen on the name Bware though. Just makes me think of "beware" which seems kinda cheesy to me.
...
How about.... Beeware?
or beauware.
or bhouse.
The idea of "bee ware" is humorous to me. I rather like it. But that's kinda stretching the whole beautiful warehouse concept.

So? If the name sticks, we'll scrap the "Beautiful Warehouse" concept and just go with "Beeware". ...Of course, the concept logo would have to follow suit. Something in yellow, obviously...

DA's nice. It compiles my artwork in a website to be easy access for showing friends, family, and teachers.
Getting noticed.... I'm as popular as I care to be on DA. Mostly comment on people's DA pages I know in real life.
One thing I did in the beginning was watch alot of Drunk Duck people on DA and comment on their stuff. The ones that replied more than a simple "thank you" helped get a conversation going and thus I feel more comfortable coming back and commenting again.
Sooo... maybe that helps?

Hmm...getting noticed on DA. Really, it's not something I would personally strive to do. Popular people on DA find themselves sucked into a void of problems. It's not a nice deal. Not to mention that the site, as a community, is sluggish, glitchy and generally full of morons. But enough of DA as a whole--on to being noticed.
I clicked the link in your signature and checked out your gallery for myself, assuming that that's the gallery you're referring to. So if it's not, turn a blind-eye to this entire post.
Your stuff's not bad. However, you're not being noticed on DA not because of the quality of the work, but for the quantity. You can't sit and wait for people to flock to you, you have to work for it and make yourself known. Commenting is good, but not everyone returns the karma and runs to your gallery to comment on your stuff. Believe me, I know.
The main problem as to why you're getting next to no attention on DA is because you only have three deviations up, each of which having been posted between long time intervals:
Rachel Grey--April 6th, 2006
Marvel Gir meets Gear--May 16th, 2006 (roughly one month and one week since your last update)
Potpourri--June 20th (again, roughly one month and one week since your last update)
The DAsphere strives on activity. You have to work for attention if you want it. You need to post your art more frequently, make some friends, plug your gallery on other sites, and maybe even visit the DA forums. I've never been to the forums myself for fear of lag-overload, so save that as a last-resort.
Anyway, that's my answer and rather bad advice to your DA problem. You shouldn't worry about it, really. DA's main purpose is a place to display your artwork--it's not a popularity contest.
