Spore! That game was a big disappointment. Sure, the creature creator was great, but the rest of the game was nothing special.

Really? I quit stopped playing at the Tribes section, but I really loved the part where you played as your creature.

I don't recall Spore getting "praised to the skies" by reviewers. It was certainly hyped prior to release, but the reviews after the release didn't really portray it as anything special.

Kind of a necro post...
but GTA IV. You will NEVER convince me this is a good game, and I've played them all since 3 game out. This game took out everything I loved about GTA; good driving, gang warfare, crazy suicidal missions with no tangible benefit just for yuks, and did I mention good driving? All that was left was vehicles that handled like greased bricks, landscapes that looked blurry and dull, and characters who I wanted to throw over a bridge. I went to the midnight release, knowing I had work at 4:00 AM, stayed up, played it, and spent the whole next day at work wishing I had just slept. Why reviewers continue to lavish praise on this game and trash Saints Row 2, which is everything GTA is supposed to be, I will never know. Oh wait, I do know; no reviewer in his right mind would ever tell the truth about a flagship franchise if he wanted to keep his job.
Secondly, Killzone. ANY Killzone, but 2 in particular. Awesome intro, lame gameplay.

I'm the enemy he requires to define him.
Soon or later, he'll bring me back to life again for another epic encounter of shouting about power levels and grimacing.

I actually liked GTA IV, didn't love it though. I think the handling was great, far more realistic and the aiming was improved but it still fell down because of the (mostly) lame missions and poor characters. Also for all the hype it barely improved upon the old GTA games formula.
Saints row 2 is both a cheap clone and superior in different ways but is so much more fun. Also has more inventive missions.

The move thread made me think of this...
Little big planet.
I really liked the idea but the reality fell very short for me, nothing held my interest at all.
Modnation racers.
Again I really wanted to like it but the controls are shoddy and weapon system is terible.
While the modding aspect on both games could be good why bother when the gameplay is so poor.

Red Dead Redemption.
Okay, it's not a BAD game when it comes to gameplay and everything, I played it through and all (though I didn't think it was anything amazing in that department either)...I think it's mostly that I hated every single character in that game, even the one you play. I tend to like bastard characters, but my god, I just wanted to shoot everyone and I couldn't.

You mean again? You mentioned Little Big Planet in your first post.
And what shoddy controls are you referring to in Mod Nation Racers? The controls and weapons all seem fine to me. Lack of turtle shells does not automatically make a cart racer suck.

did I whoops.
btw i am not a mario kart fanboy as your comment may imply, simply that the controls on modnation racers are too loose and the weapon system feels clumsy.

The weapon system worked fine for me. It was better balanced than other cart racers, while still offering some ability to serve as an equalizer. Controls seemed pretty tight to me, too. I had no problems navigating most tracks and I have managed to get a number of my friends hooked on the game, as well. It's possibly the easiest cart racer to pick up and play that I've ever tried.

Final Fantasy XIII can die in a fire.
For every good thing I can say about the game, there is a glaring flaw that almost negates its value.
The battle system made everything quick and streamlined, buffs and debuffs were useful and legitimate options, and juggling targets and roles was pretty enjoyable. But there is NO good reason to strip the player of control over 2 of the 3 party members. People say that you need to step back and make the AI do the grunt work because things are happening so quickly, but in the end it actually didn't make the battle system any more deep than FF12's gambits. The time you save in not entering commands individually is only necessary because they made everything so fast on purpose. If they had slowed it down a tad, it wouldn't be a problem, and people would probably have time to notice that the battle was actually not as complex as it originally seemed.
The graphics and music are amazing, but for crap's sake, I shouldn't have to wait nearly five seconds to load a character's Crystarium table.
Further gripes include: A plot that makes no damn sense and is completely uninteresting by the end of things, a weapon/accessory creation system that is as abstruse as it is boring, an utter lack of gameplay variety or anything to do outside of random battles, dungeons that are just slogs through narrow corridors, next to no choice in developing characters or battle parties, no towns, no overworld, no meaningful exploration whatsoever, no reason the game had to be delayed for so long before release, and perhaps the worst crime of all for a Final Fantasy game -- no reason a sane person would ever want to play this game again after beating it.

You are aware that this pretty much sums up every Final Fantasy game ever, right? XIII (while bad) was fairly standard as far as the series goes.

Different strokes I suppose. I really wanted to like it but even my kids found it dull, that probably is down to the lack of Mario though. I did download a mario modded racer to see if that got them into it... no dice.

I half agree, XIII was "streamlined" and felt even more on rails than the others. That and the series has become very tired.

XIII from what I hear is one of the better titles because its not as slow and stiff as the others, but it still looks like a load of bullshit to me. I didn't have any fun with the first few titles before it, I doubt I'm going to have much fun now.
Tactics is maybe the only one I like, but I'm really gay for tactic RPGs so I'm not really an unbiased source on quality for that one.
EDIT: Actually FFVI was really good too, idk why I keep forgetting about that one.

Monster Hunter Tri. I really wanted to like it, the idea of going around and hunting monsters that all interacted with each other realistically and making armor and weapons from the bones, hides, tusks and furs of your prey.
But the game was horrible. It's one of the few games in existence that actually hurt my head to play. The setting was incredibly dull, like they just slapped some random shitty generic anime characters together to form a "cast" and then left them sitting stationary in a shoddy town in which nothing happens at all.
The menus are ridiculously complex and baffling, the game itself does nothing to help you except carefully blend the instructions in with the painful to read dialogue, and then they give you a bunch of random kill-n-gather quests with time limits that serve no purpose. I played it once and that was enough. I regret buying it.

GTA IV.
I think saint Rows 2 were alot more fun and more flexible than GTA IV.
Sure i did play GTA IV and beaten it twice.
I just couldn't stand the phone calls(you get an emo whining to you or your goddamned cousine yelling to you about boobies and whatever) and the story was too depressing.
the missions don't feel so fun but more forced and annoying. "Now you did save him. now get him before he bleeds to death. Oh now you did save him from bleeding to death.. now you must hunt down the car because it stolen his bag. etc etc" it is like the game is punishing you for completing the goals in a mission by giving you MORE goals. it is tiring.
Saint rows 2 might have a bad story and is pretty weak in characters. BUT it did have alot of insane missions that made you ENJOY them alot unlike in GTA IV.
Like to drive a truck and spoils the hookers and the pimps so they couldn't work and etc. i did laugh though that. :)
