In your opinion what is it and why?
My choice is Valkyria Chronicles. Everything about this game is top notch. The graphics are amazing. The gameplay is totally original and addictive. The story is so gripping I couldn't stop playing until it was over. I wish it had some kind of versus mode but that is a very minor complaint.

I haven't played enough games to give any kind of real opinion on the matter, but I will say that LittleBigPlanet deserves some kind of nod. Smash Bros. Brawl is the only game I've played as much, but as much as I like it, I recognize that it's largely just an update of Melee with a 2D sidescroller thrown in.

Fallout 3. Hands down.
Sorry if that makes me sound commercial but that game is awesome. I am a big fan of the Fallout franchise. Love those games to death.

Those were my two cents.

I think I completely agree with Inkmonkey. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the game that I wrangled the most enjoyment out of this year, and yet I couldn't pin it as game of the year because it feels like merely the perfection of a previous game.
So my vote goes to Little Big Planet. I'm probably a strange case because the rest of the world would nominate whichever testosterone-drenched space marine shooter had the most blood and normal-maps. But I always seem to go for the innovative and family-friendly stuff for some reason.

I guess the thing about LBP is that it's one of few games out this year that takes a new idea, and then does it very well. Mirror's Edge is a fascinating concept, but in delivery it's actually quite frustrating, and the first-person perspective that sets it apart it largely it's greatest hurdle. Though I suppose LBP is more a case of taking gameplay elements that work and presenting them in a new and interesting way.

Little Big Planet and Brawl are certainly in the running. They are both amazing games. I've never played any Fallout games at all tho.

Both of those games I would also agree with. I just got LBP a few hours ago and I freakin' love it. I have the Mirror's Edge demo and it's also great. They both are unique and groundbreaking....though LBP is more my style. I like cute games that I can have fun with.

EA really made something amazing with this game. Story, Graphics, Voiceover and Sound, Gameplay, Yeah, its a corridor shooter, but the best one yet!

Brawl.
I wish I'd played LBP or Metal Gear Solid 4 so I could say them, too. D: (Still working my way through the MGS series... and lacking a PS3)
Too bad Spore isn't as revolutionary as everyone hoped.

I haven't played enough games this year to award a game such a title. But Bully: Scholarship edition would be a winner for 2007.

Gears of War 2.
It feels like a vast improvement over the first one. It has a solid campaign that's made even more fun when played with a friend. The multiplayer(though plagued with glitches) is fun and playing ranked as a party doesn't get old. It was my most anticipated game of 08 and it didn't disappoint. :]

I'm going to go with Little Big Planet too. It did the most with a new idea in a fun way. I'm finding that I'm growing less and less interested in games as I turn into an old man. They suddenly feel like a waste of time.
I probably got more hours of play out of Mega Man 9 than I did any other game this year.

Sorry if that makes me sound commercial but that game is awesome. I am a big fan of the Fallout franchise. Love those games to death.

Amen to that. It's just because there are more important things on the agenda, be they work or play. I think.
I find that I narrow down to only 1 game and that 1 game only, and it's competitive multiplayer based. Playing by myself feels like a complete waste of time.

i'm stuck little big planet and fallout 3, even though I've only played them for about an hour the most, but mostly watched other people play. :P
although, I've wasted most of my hours playing rock band 2. I've skipped some classes staying at home playing it.

The World Ends With You was quite possibly the most amazing game I ever played last year. It was an extremely unique gaming experience to the point that I wish I could unplay it and and erase it from my mind, then play it again just to feel like I did as I was playing through it the first time.

Agreed.
Brawl was top game of '08. SSB is my favourite game series after all.

I don't think I'll ever find games a waste of time, as they tend to speak to the artist in me and say "HEY. GET INSPIRED." And I'd like to design for them, so I have to be on top of things. :D BUT, MMOs are a massive waste of time for me depending on the context of my life... like right now. I wasted $25 for two months of not playing Final Fantasy XI. *facepalm*
Back on topic, I feel like there's probably at least one game out there more worthy than Brawl for best of 2008, but it's so close. Thinking back now it feels like it's missing something, although it's probably only due to the hype I had for it beforehand.
Also, they need to bring the original SSB to the virtual console already. :(
