In the world of video games, which includes all the consoles and computer genres, which would you say represent the most powerfull idols. The games that will be remembered for all the ages for one thing or another.
Some obvious examples are:

A. Final Fantasy VII
B. Zelda
C. Starcraft
D. World of Warcraft

I would also be interested to know why (dont worry nothing long :P).
For example: Mario, because its a plumber who eats mushrooms and battles turtles... need I say more?

Well, I have one. Pokemon.

I mean, let's look at how it all started. Satoshi Tajiri thoguht up of a game akin to his fondness of bug-collecting just by looking at a Game Boy link cable and imagining bugs crawling on it. So he and his friends pitch this to Nintendo, who only can see the game selling only a modest amount of units. He gets some mentoring from Miyamoto, and by 1996, he and Nintendo end up with a bestselling game that is revitalizing Game Boy sales. Once the anime is made and Pokemon is set to be released on America, it's pretty much become one of the world's most successful video games. I mean, how many video games have reached millions of people, had an animated cartoon ("anime" is just the Japanese term for cartoon. It's still a cartoon) that lasted more than 1-2 seasons, and is still alive and kicking. (which brings it out of "fad" territory)

As a game, it has solid gameplay, and it still brings in millions in sales. Heck, Halo 3 still hasn't caught up to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl yet! Yes, critical reception also accounts for it's merits as a game, but really now, the games, while not being as godly as Super Mario Galaxy or Portal, are still good enough for people to love it to death. Standing in a good position, Pokemon has lasted for 10 whole years and isn't going anywhere soon. So, this is why Pokemon has a spot as a Video game legend, and an overall footnote on world popular culture as a whole.

(Oh, and how many current-day "E" rated games are noted as being good. Pretty much every good games that isn't Pokemon or Mario is "T" or higher, mostly leaving the younger crowd out of the 'good" gaming scene. Or to put it more clearly, we're getting about 15 slices of cake while they end up with only 1 or 2.)

...

Wow I talk/type too much!

1.Kratos from God of War
Cause he beat a dude to death with his own arm and had sex with two beautiful girls right before killing mythological figures and a god all in the same game.Twice.

2.Mario
Cause i still cant figure out how eating mushrooms make you grow twice your original size.

3.Rachet and Clank
Cause they never made a bad game. And i doubt they ever will.

4.WoW
Cause it ruins lives apparently.

5.Sonic
Cause once upon a time he had good games.

No one for Crash Bandicoot? Come on it was THE game back in the day. No? Well the newer games did suck...

Ooh I will have to add Gears of War: With is old-fashioned-macho-military-style, fine looking graphics and chainsaw bayonet it will be written into game history.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Alpha Centauri. It's one of the games I wish I could still find - it was on my HD for years...
This is a signature. There are others like it but this one is mine.

Crash Bandicoot was never THE game. It did have funny commercials back in the PSX era, though.

As for Gears, Lord Shplane said it well enough.

As for real legends of gaming, you have a few which do really stand out for me.

Tetris has been going strong for how long now? It's practically become a cultural icon in and of itself. There are so few people who wouldn't recognize the game on sight these days, even non-gamers.

Super Mario Brothers revolutionized console gaming with it's depth of gameplay, unique level design and a different approac from what we were used to with the typical arcade ports.

Dragon Warrior created the JRPG genre.

Final Fight wasn't the first or even the best game of it's genre, but it was probably the most iconic.

Oh, Resident Evil.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was the first popular Survival Horror, and really put the genre in the minds of gamers, paving the way for Silent Hill and other such games.

Pac-Man. I have no clue why, though.

SMB, got it for being the first sidescrolling-storyline platformer.

Sonic for an original smooth, speedy, feel that no other game has matched.

LOZ combined skill, strategy, and puzzle.

Modern Legends.

1.) Half Life, Half Life 2 - These games will always be remembered as they are the turning point for all First Person Shooters. Both revolutionary, both still extremely fun to play. Gameplay and story proved that games don't need flashy cut scenes. Without the Half-Life series, you would not have the first person shooters you see and play online today.

2.) GTA: Vice City - This game cemented GTA's future. It was brilliant, a game set in 1980's Miami with one of the best soundtracks ever assembled. No other game has been able to top it, not in the open sand box type gameplay, nor in GTA's own sequels.

3.) Shenmue series - It proved that gamers were willing to try something vastly different from anything seen before. It was real life simulated onto our TV screens. Unfortunately, it didn't do that good and will be remembered as more of a failure.

4.) Driver 3 - The game that failed so hard that it actually made it on this list. At first, it looked like a great game... then reality happened and everything started to fall apart, the false illusion of a sun-baked Miami shattered. The disappointment that this game caused was immense, frankly, I'm still shocked at how badly this failed.

5.) Sim City - FUCK YES YOU ARE THE BEST CITY PLANNING SIMULATION EVER.

..oh wait, you're the only one. :\

SMB was legendary because it set console games apart from arcade games by offering a deeper and more complete gameplay experience. It wasn't the first sidescrolling story-based platformer, though. Even the Atari had games that fit that description.

How a game with things like this in it sold poorly is beyond me.

I know! and when i finished it i was so looking forward to a sequel!! That could have made a great series if they marketed it a little better.

Agreed. ...Though according to Wiki, the very first video game was actually the "Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device," conceived by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann, way back in 1947. Inspired by radar displays, it consisted of an analog device that allowed a user to control a vector drawn dot on the screen to simulate a missile being fired at targets represented by drawings fixed to the screen.
