So... apparently I'm subscribed to this magazine. I just got one in the mail today.

But, I don't remember signing up. Wtf is going on?

Did you recently buy an Edge card at EB Games/Gamestop? Because a subscription comes with that card.

What Lizard_Bite said.

It's also possible that you got it because you pre-ordered something. I know I got like 12 Game Informer magazines all of a sudden sometime after I did something at EB games.

...

Or its just a random thing. I really don't know.
Updates Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday's (depends).

I was harassed into buy an Edge card at a local Gamestop and ended up getting Game Informer as well. But I only casually flip through them once and then throw them away. They've reminded me just how useless gaming magazines have become thanks to the internet.

They suckered me in too. I made sure and use the shit out of my edge card, buying dvds from the 5 dollar bin. If I wanted to buy movies, I'd check the used stuff there first. I baught a couple of games there too, mostly stuff in the 20-30 dollar used range and probably did save some money. So the card paid for itself, but the magazine was really shitty. I feel like it was harassing me with its shoddy journalism. They also didn't send me a magazine, one that I would've liked to have seen, the one with the wii and playstation 3 stuff when they came out last year. I read all the same stuff online, but if I'm sitting on the can and I don't have the laptop, I'll read a magazine like Game Informer.

I did find one useful article in there that I read in other stuff, but I was very excited to see the screen shots in print form: Fallout 3. Gamespot and IGN described the same demo, but they didn't have the pictures or layout like the magazine did with the goofy font. I'm looking forward to playing that one.

Another magazine I got recently was xbox magazine. I got two free ones for buying my 360. They came with demo discs, which I like demos. I'll play demos of games that I probably won't ever buy over and over again. I like downloading demos more than the disks. The xbox magazine was a big stroke fest for the xbox. It also described the same fallout 3 demo, but not in an overly elaborate way like Game Informer did.

Another issue addressed Grand Theft Auto Iv (another game I'm looking forward to) and both xbox magazine and game informer described it the same way as gamespot. So whats the point in magazines? The same as print stratagy guides. If you've not got the internet for some reason or your on a trip without internet, its useful. I like reading about video games. I like video games. I like reading Wizard on occasion as well, but its really shitty. So whats the point?

The only point I've seen about it so far is that you see games you wouldn't otherwise think to look for.

I've actually seen several games in it now that I never knew about before.

Ever read Play Magazine? It has about the best layout and design I've ever seen. That's one magazine I actually wouldn't mind having a subscription to. They devote a lot of space to high-detailed art and screenshots. Plus they spend more time exploring the facet's of a games design and less time trying to make us think their editors have cool personalities.

What's with the hating on GI? If people here actually, y'know, read the things like you're supposed to instead of just skimming the previews, you'd see the excellent writing that makes it worth reading. Plus, it's more personal than IGN and they sometimes get scoops before anyone else. To say its archaic would be uninformed at best.

I like it cuz the reviews make me laugh. And I do think they're informative. And the mags are free, how can you beat that?

Gamefan was the best, though. Those guys liked the exact same things I liked. And they loved to post big 2D artwork on their pages, instead of the current practice of tiny 3D screenshots you have to squint at.

I miss all the 2D artwork that used to be in game mags. Now it's all 3D polygons with zero style.

FIGHT_2 current chapter: Light Years of Gold

Yeah... my Edge Card and GI subscription expired a few months ago. No more discounts and free magazines... :( My older sister gave them to me as presents for my Middle School graduation. :) Too bad they're expired now... :(

'Tis true, twas a great magazine. I was saddened when it was put to rest. Well, saddened until I found out about Hardcore Gamer Magazine , which is basically GameFan, right down to the design sensibilities and its main staff.
