Formal Art Training? How experienced are you?

1) first, I started drawing anime. Anime is how I started.

2) Second, I taught myself. Developed an obsession for art. Needed an outlet. Or I woulda did worse shit with my life.

3)Third, took a 5 day art course that cost me $250. Learned alot though. In a span of 5 days, the results were better than expected.

4)Took lots of art subjects in highschool. I had grade 12 art. I was the worst in the class as far as technical skill is concerned.

5)Did art fundamentals certificate. Teachers barely taught you shit there. I think I improved maybe 30% since I started.

Though to be fair, I had this really good teacher who gave me a "cheat" for perspective panels (no more vanishing points), and action poses. He was once an artist for Spawn comics and worked in Disney and Pixar and many other animation gigs.

6) After doin art fundamentals, I tried lots of times to get into college art programs. Such as George Brown (graphic design, illustration) and Sheridan (animation). Since I'm a "fallback" person who just gets into whatever accepts him, I just ended up in a digital media design program. Digital media. It doesnt need top level technical art skill. If this whole art schools thing were an army, the digital media division are the unskilled militia... while the animation students are the super elite unit. lol

7) Digital media isnt really what appealed to me. I just hated the fucking contract works I'd be likely to get upon completion of the program. Fucking. Contract. Unstable. Positions. That paid. The same. As a factory worker. I wanted a PERMANENT FULL TIME!!!

8) And now, I'm just chillin out. Drawing comics as a hobby. Art to me is more of relaxation and socialization (since webcomics has a "community" aspect of it). Art is more of a pasttime while I have a "main job" (that isnt art related) to support myself.

***Seriously. If you want to pursue art as a career, you have to be DAMN FUCKIN GOOD or DAMN FUCKIN FANATICALLY PASSIONATE about it to make it. As you will have bottleneck stiff competition. You should also learn how to weild clout. Clout. Political blabla. You NEED that shit. If you're the shy guy who doesnt wanna open his mouth in class and is too damn quiet, sorry. You might as well send your resume to walmart and other minimum wage jobs. Learn. Politics.

Or else art as a career isnt gonna be your bread and butter. :)

dang... ranted again. lol

....

Also, learn that cursing every third word doesn't get you any points either.

I have a BA degree with Honors, but mostly starved until I picked up another profession to feed myself with. I've drawn since I was a kid and now...30 years later...I'm just now getting the feel of turning out something nice.

Education or not, just keep working. You'll get better.

Ethan (who draws our comic) has no formal training whatsoever. He taught himself how to draw and it took him about five years before we felt it was "good" enough to try and make a livin' from it.

(I occassionally color and ink and am teaching myself to draw right now, I'm not as quick at the whole drawin' thing, but I'm almost ready to perhaps try my hand at writing and drawing a webcomic by myself (although, it's hard--'cause Ethan is right there and I can just say, "Hey, draw me blah blah blah.")

No, no formal art training, and it shows. I still have stupid amature problems which frusterate me. I am going to do art in college though. Im hoping it's all it's worked up to be and will take me to the next level... Im 17, and I often compare myself to people who are twice my age and I get dissapointed heh, cant help myself. But like I said, once I do art in school for a while I hope to get to pro level.

I learned to read with Garfield, so comics for me go waaaaay back. I decided on my career choice a long time ago, too.

I'm currently undertaking an art major and am considering a teaching minor.

I am self taught for 13 years, but I did take art classes at an art school in new york to further enhance my skills.
