I've been thinking about changing the font for my strip. I currently use Arial. It's very clear and easy to read but it's also a little too cold and mechanical for my tastes.

I want to find something that'll fit the tone of my story. But, it can't be distracting or difficult to read either.

Does anybody have any suggestions? What do you guys use?

If you go onto one of those 1001 free font sites, there's a number of comic-style fonts (that are not comic sans) to give you that true comic look.

I use Laffeyette comic pro, very cheerful and easy to read. Other suggestions are:
Blambot lite
Acme secret agent
Comic geek

I personally use Hand of Sean from dafont.com.
I've been told several times it fits great with my comic, because it's got that hand-drawn feel to it. Technically, it is. Just not my hand :P

I've been using Letteromatic and later switched to Acme Secret Agent (it's slightly narrower so it helped me save space in word balloons when I was lettering pages for the smaller format).

I used yourfonts to just create a custom font in the past, but it costs money now. I'm sure there are other free/cheap font creators out there though.

I primarily use Smack Attack from Blambot. Cause its free and I love it. (thanks, Nate)

To Iba's question; there's a site called FontStruct where you can create fonts on their website... pretty basic, I would imagine (the letter B is about as far as I've gotten in any custom font). There's also a program called... uh.... FontForge, I think. Haven't used that either.

Font creation is something that intrigues me, but just seems a little to tedious, and frankly... I don't have the time.
