I just started using Font Picker, which lets you preview all your installed fonts, with any text you want. It's a free download, and compatible with Windows and Mac since it's an Adobe AIR app. I could've used something like this long ago.

Actually, I'd need something that would let me do that with uninstalled fonts (for example a set of folders with a total of over 2000 fonts. And hopefully freeware too :D

I believe Font Xplorer will do that with uninstalled fonts. And it's free. :] But, I think it only works with truetype fonts.
