What is your opinion about webcomics that use flash for viewing their comics or simply used as a navigational interface for the website?

Most of the opinions I found elsewhere were pretty negative. Can't save, can't open multiple pages and long downloading times. Plus the comic sites I've seen using flash navigation only have it as a substitute to html that uses previous and next links method.

The only positive things I saw was the zooming, no more scrolling and a single tap of the space bar loads the next page.

Are there comics out there that uses flash for comic viewing/navigation that does it better than the standard html format?

I hate Flash interfaces in webcomics for pretty much all the reasons you've stated. Zuda is a good example. There may well be some great comics there, but I wouldn't know because I was immediately driven off by their wretched Flash interface.

I dunno, recently I found MSpaint adventures boring EXCEPT when it does something cool in flash.

Alpha Shade used to have a great Flash interface. Best I'd seen in a comic. Helped that the entire thing was actually drawn with Flash.

The Gods of ArrKelaan used to have a neat little page turning app thing done with flash- on another test site I think, but I found that a little bit irritating. It's just so much simpler to click a link for a new page than struggle with a page turning animation thingo.

The comic Supermassive Blackhole is done with a flash interface on its main site and that works really, really well. It makes the comic more cinematic, more movie-like. :)

I think the only problem with Flash is the imagination of those who use it. Flash is so powerful and useful, but a hell of a lt of people aren't really up to the task of making anything really good with it.

I love flash obviously so I've got no complaints. I like to use flash to make comics interactive. I know there's a downside though. I haven't put anything up yet but some of the comics, I have the punchline appear only with user input so for sure lot's of people will never see it and go "huh? this sucks". Still I think it's worth it. At least it's fun for me.

People have always and will always misuse flash.

Very impressive! To me it works similar to the zoom and panning tools in Photoshop CS4.
The only fault I find is with the zoom: you can zoom out too far, so there's all that empty space in view- probably too much of it.
And when you zoom in and out again after that (for me at least), the centring point for the zoom seemed to be the bottom right hand corner, so I had to keep navigating my way to the rest of the comic again when I'd finished zooming.

Anyway, great work there man!

Yes, I didn't put any scrolling or zooming limits yet for testing reasons. But there really is no reason to zoom or pan out excessively unless you're trying to break it.

Only that one panel was a flash. It wasn't even needed. It could have been an ordinary image like the other panels along with it.

That's a nice interface you got there. It'd be a perfect cheat for my where's waldo type comics.

I tried starting a flash comic anthology and hoped other people would join me. It never took off so maybe flash was a turn off (among many other things with the project). I only got as far as the preview issue which I haphazardly put together and never bothered tweaking. I think I will try it again sometime. I'm all about alternative reading styles. Thanks for reminding me. XD

I personally just prefer the plain press button to go next. Instead of flipping pages, zooming in, moving around the page. It may seem lazy, but when I am being lazy, I prefer my leisure time to add to my laziness.

There was one webcomic that I saw which seemed really good. The art was good and the story was interesting, but they had a flash interface. You couldn't view the page in full view no matter what, and the comic viewer was a tiny rectangle box, like about the size of the entry box in the forums. It was also permanently zoomed in at a HUGE scale, so I could only see a tiny bit of the page I was trying to read.

All in all, I much prefer the original way of doing it. It's easy and it saves time.
