Mmm, a lot of the movies I like have been mentioned, so I'll do my best to list five that haven't.
And I like the way this topic was worded by the way. I refuse to pick favourites because there just isn't an ultimate answer to that questions. Anyway.
Last Life in the Universe
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0345549/
I saw this movie about two years ago and I've desperatly wanted to see it ever since. I barely remember the story, but the images etched into my mind are so hauntingly beautiful that I don't care.
Immortel
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314063/
The movie stays really close visually to the comic (which is very good by the way) and surprisingly enough almost makes more sense. But even if it does make more sense, the story is still weird and very dreamlike.
Mirrormask
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366780/
If you cut the story down to the bone it's nothing new, but the way it's told is.. Well, it's animated Dave McKean more or less, and I happen to like his style quite a lot. There's some very funny moments in it too.
Strings
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374248/
This story is anything but new. The story is predictable. It's not the story I love, it's the world that's created. There's something facinating about the fact that they are aware that they are puppets and doesn't act like the strings aren't there.
Goodbye Lenin!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301357/
This story is told in a low-key sorta quirky way, and it works so well. It really gets to my emotions, and I'll have to admit that it gets hard for me not to cry a little at the end. But don't get me wrong, there's funny moments too, it's just the kind of story that balances both beautifully.
Aaand that's that.
Hopefully I'll have mentioned something you never even knew existed.

Currently my favorites areeee:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - It is my all time favorite movie. I've watched it at least 15 times and I could definitely watch it 100 more.
V For Vendetta - I wish I saw this one in theaters.
The Dark Knight - DUH.
Napoleon Dynamite - I'm sorry, I have the stupidest sense of humor. I find this movie hilarious every time I watch it.
Arsenic and Old Lace - An oldie, but a goodie.

My top 5:
JAWS - I've probably seen it 100 times and I never EVER get tired of it.
KILL BILL 1 & 2 - Probably my favorite fairly current movie.
THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY - Best western ever?
POINT BREAK - Not really a fan of Reeves or Swazy (sp?), but what a cool movie!
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - Just an unbelievable opening scene...

woo...5...wow...well, here goes...
in no particular order...
Vanilla Sky-Both the original and the tom cruise one. just fantastic movies.
Speed Racer-the best movie of 08. iron man was ok and i enjoyed dark knight, but speed racer was simply better. the end.
Matrix reloaded- aside from the fact that this movie is a MUST SEE for dynamic storytelling/composition, *see image when agent is on car and all the chaos is happening on the freeway-one of the greatest composed shots ever* this was the movie where neo kicks ass...he took forever to get around to it in 1, and in 3 he just...well.,..hmm.
Requiem for a dream- i know this gets on alot of peoples list, and deservedly so. this is the movie to watch if you need a reason to never do drugs. unless you WANT to end up on a table with a dildo up your butt....
28 Days later-im also throwing weeks in here too, the first scene of weeks was the most intense shit ibve ever seen in a horror movie, and days' cinematography was and still is amazing.

FINE. I will watch your silly little movie.
In the meantime, though, I think it will be either Creature from the Black Lagoon or that old Batman movie(the one with Adam West). They both make me laugh.

1. Edward Scissorhands
Allthough I'm not a fan of the gothic imagery, I truly love how it contrasts to the urban town with it's 50's pastels and its equally vivid citizens. This was a movie I grew up with, so, yeah it might be something alot of Tim Burton fans love as well... For me it was the first movie that made me cry, and the first score I actually went out to BUY (the Ice Dance is just such a nostalgic master piece)
2. The Incredibles
Brad Bird blew me away with this one. Sure, it had no pairings, no deep moral or even a message. But holy Hell how I enjoy it. The voices, acting, action, animation, characters and... JUST EVERYTHING is so freaking perfect. There's not ONE boring moment, and most notable of all: The story arch is actually unique from most Disney movies. Something that Brad Bird should've stuck to in Ratatouille (and the only reason Ratatouille isn't on this list). What I'm talking about is the happy times > action > happier times > downward spiral where the main character is thrown into the gutter due to guilt or betrayal > everything becomes happy again > the end. Thankfully The Incredibles didn't have that, it was just pure action all the way through =D
3. Meet The Robinsons
Yes yes, I know. It suffers from the "Hercules Syndrome" (ie. too many characters), but oh my gosh how this movie stood out. The trailers made me go "Meh, seems messy." but when I watched it, and when the end came. I bawled. And I've watched it 38 times now. STILL cry every single time the ending song comes in "Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder. Don't you know? The hardest part is over..." gah! DX It was a perfect movie with so many great characters. You can really tell the producers put their very heart and soul into the production, because it shows. And that's how it should be =]
4. The Last Action Hero
I know, corny old movie with MISTAH GOVERNA OF CALIFORNIA'! But it's hilarious. My favorite scene just has to be when the bad guy comes to the real world and sees two robbers mug a guy and then go "Take his shoes! Take his shoes!" only to then run away after taking his shoes, upon the bad guy goes "...Take is SHOES?"
5. The Burbs
This movie could also be called "Inventor of the Space to Earth to Town to Neighbourhood Sequence Movie". Because it did that too. But nevertheless, I love this movie. Because og my GODS, be was right all along! D:

FINE. I will watch your silly little movie.
Hey - I didn't make that silly little movie! Anyways, here's five:
How to murder your wife.
When I saw Jack Lemmon's fancy townhouse, I knew I had to draw comic strips. I'm still waiting.
Once Upon a Time in the West
Henry Fonda's turn as a bad guy has to be one of the meanest ever; elaborate killing involving mouth organ?!- and those tunes!
Casablanca.
Rick, Rick, you've got to help me Rick!
I know where I'm going
The one he made before A Matter Of Life And Death.
The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
Ghastly murder, art deco sets, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Vincent Price talking out of the side of his neck through a gramophone - this one has it all.

you know i just dont get the casablanca love, or gone with the wind...ive watched both, multiple times, both as a kid and again as an adult...and i dont think either one of them deserves the credit they get. The Wizard of Oz was a much better movie than those two.

Erm, Ironscarf, why isn't Citizen Kane on your list?
Because this is the favourite films list!
Now, if this was the list of 'films most likely to give you some really inventive visual storytelling ideas when there's not much action taking place', Citizen Kane might get a look in.
Why are you frowning at me like that?!

In no particular order what so ever
300- because Frank Miller and Lynne Varley kick ass even though they are no longer together
Who Framed Roger Rabbit- because it was my favorite as a kid, and a frequent watch on those red eyed nights of my teen years
Boondock Saints- because Irish people kick ass and this movie was perhaps one of the best ever made! If you haven't seen it yet go do it right now drop whatever you're doing and go see it!!
Sin City- Refer back to 300 minus the Lynne Varley part
Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer- Couldn't pick between the two so I put both down. These movies are awesome and I thank the people who brought them to America!

lotharAll good films... but I don't think the remake was that crappy. I never saw all the parts of it though, but what I did see seemed very well done and it was truer to the books. The actors in Lynch's version were way better though, especially Kyle MacLachlan as Paul, but all the rest too.
Dune (the original directors cut) not the peice of crap CG remake
The worst version of Dune would have to be the extra long TV cut that did of Lynch's original. Even he disowned it. It was really, really nasty, including crappy illustrations and even orse animation to pad it out. Such a shame.

and patrick stewart as gurney hallek ! overall i liked the original better because it was gritty and seemed to be coated with a layer of spice dust , or slime . and the guild navigators kicked serious ass in the first movie .
.
but it was cool to see the "children of dune" portion, as that was not in the original.
