WOW! Simply WOW! I grabbed the full series of Firefly on DVD about a week ago at Target for only $20. I'd heard it was a great show, but I was NOT expecting what I got.
Simply put, Firefly is AMAZING! There are great shows and there are shows that are so flawless that they feel more like lifechanging events than TV shows. Firefly is the latter.
Despite only being 14 episodes long, the series is filled to the brim with character development. The writing is utterly jaw-dropping the whole way through (Hilarious, action filled, and full of win). Not to mention the mixture of sci-fi and western works so well that it makes you want to forget these genres don't usually go together.
BUT the series got cancelled after 14 episodes. Normally this would be enough to make someone go emo and start cutting depraved sad messages into his wrists, but the series sold so well on DVD that they made a movie to finish the series out.
The movie, apropriately called 'Serenity', is loaded with a bigger budget (meaning more explosions) and answers many of the questions left hanging by the series (but not all of them.
And as you would expect, the movie is as brilliantly written as the show, despite Mal acting like a dick most of the time.
Find Firefly and Serenity and watch them! This is not a suggestion, this is an order!
The series and movie are THAT good!

Welcome to the light, Rich.
You know, there's supposedly an MMO being made that's based on the series. That's awesome.
Firefly is one of the best shows ever made.

I saw one episode on TV once and thought it was pretty dull compared to other TV scifi... Not a LEXX or a Farescape certianly :(
Looked like scifi on the same mould as that thing with Kevin Sorbo in, but slightly better? I dunno, one episode doesn't really give it a proper chance, I'll probably hire out the series at my local video shop eventually. Give it a chance then. ;)

The first episode doesn't really make a proper go of it, I wasn't impressed by the 1st episode. I don't think I started really liking it until the 3rd. An episode in the middle would seem boring to someone who hadn't seen any of the show beforehand, either, there are a lot of jokes and things that rely on familiarity.
However I did think it was quite a fun show and there were a lot of surprising parts, and a lot of characterization. Jayne and Kaylee were my favorites. :kitty: I really hated everying River-related though, so that kind of started ruining things toward the end of the series, and made the movie not very interesting to me.

Part of the problem was that when Fox first aired it they actually aired the second episode first, opting for something they felt was a little "faster" out of the gate. This being the Train Robbery episode, which is probably my least favorite of the series. Then they decided to put a show aimed at people in the late teen to 20-something demographic on a Friday, when most of those people are bound to be going out (X-Files was a fluke, crossed demos, and even that eventually got moved out of Fridays).
I wasn't sure about the whole western crossover thing initially myself (even though it made me think of Roddenberry's "Wagon Train to the Stars" pitch for Star Trek in the `60s), but after watching the series it makes sense.
From what I understand, Whedon had wanted Mal to be a darker character in the series, but the studio wasn't so keen on that idea so he had to be worked a little lighter, but with Whedon pretty much in control of the movie, he could work it how he wanted, which was nice. I actually prefer him that way, and I like the dialog between Mal and Inara which helped to explain it a bit so it didn't seem like he was just suddenly out of character.
Easily one of my favorite series and movies, and only one of a handful where I can say I like every character across the board.

Yay - I'm not the only one!
I've never understood the fascination with Firefly. To me it always had that B-movie feel about it. Adequate but not great acting, so-so scripts ... And the Serenity movie just seemed like ... well, like an extended TV episode.
I've always believed that people love it so much because, at the time it was made, there just wasn't anything better around.

I find Firefly interesting because it seems to depict a fairly "honest" future. In that laser guns exist, but they're largely expensive and impractical, so most people still rely on pistols. No sound in space, etc.. I think the biggest problems the series is going to face at this point is that, with such enthusiastic support from fans, newcomers are probably going to expect more than the series can deliver. It's an expertly crafted work of art, to be certain, but you know how expectations can ruin nearly anything these days. Anyway, if you are going to watch it, don't read too much about it beforehand; it's so much better if you just let it stand on its own values.

Welcome to the Browncoats, we used to have a site >_> and I just looked, seems its back up *has been outta the loop for a long time*
There used to be a Browncoats site that they made before the BDMovie was made, it was a place for fans to chat it up with the cast and even Joss Whedon would pop in from time to time with updates and to answer questions. It was a really interesting site where people could make their own "ships" with "crews" which were really fan groups and their members ^_^

I enjoyed both of these, and I hear that there's a comic series on the way (not unlike Buffy season 8).

I love both Firefly and Farscape. Both are wonderful because they have a group of dynamic characters that you can easily relate to, like a group of friends that you would hang out and play poker with on a Friday night. (Buffy had this characteristic too, in my opinion) ...You can't just watch one episode and judge it--which is what I did with both series years ago, and hated them. Then recently, I decided to sit through them. Now I can't get enough.
My favorite character in Firefly is "Wash" (the pilot), and my favorite character in Farscape is D'Argo. I made the mistake of watching the "Peacekeeper Wars" miniseries before watching any of the Farscape series, so now I know what happens in the end. So now I'm watching all of the seasons to catch up, LOL.
P.S. I have a browncoat. ;)

What a coincidence. I just watched two more episodes last night, and I think I'm maybe 78% through the series, or something?
It was fantastic, and I continue to wonder why that awesome show was cut by FOX. Geez. :-( I wish there were more of the Serenity crew's adventures somewhere...

My roommate loves Firefly. I'm not overly into it, but I liked the writing style. It seemed natural and the direction allowed for a lot of characterization. I thought that was a strength for the series, or at least a diamond in the rough when compared to the vast modern televised wasteland out there.
"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Firefly was good, but not the be-all-end-all the fans try to say it is.
River-related stuff killed the show for me, they should of kept it as a space-western, but instead there was that huge government conspiracy crap.

Actually, to be honest I thought Farscape was a load of crap when I saw the first episode on TV. I'd read about it, heard that it was being made here in Oz with the help of Disney, and various other stuff so I'd vowed to avoid it! -Australian made SciFi tends to be strange in a sucky way.
But I accidentally saw it anyway! hahaha, I still didn't like it though.
A couple of years later I was at home trying to finish a whole load of paintings for my graduation exhibition, and Farscape was being shown 3 episodes a day or something every day on Fox8, so I watched it while I worked...
Pretty soon I was hooked! I caught up and got into all the latest shows as well!
When the bastards cancelled it I was shocked! They replaced it here with America's top model of all things. I rang up and complained... In the end though I got rid of my cable TV service altogether, by that stage shows like Farscape were the only reason I even bothered to watch TV, without that there was no more point in wasting money on it.
LEXX however...I caught the first series of that by accident when it first came on and I was hooked right away! ...I wouldn't have been if I'd started with the second series though, the quality there went up and down, but that was one of the few shows that I've come upon at random and it grabbed me right away.
Red Dwarf was another, but that was back in 89 or something...
So I still may give Firefly a go... The vibe didn't appeal to me buuuut, people must like it for some reason. :)

i first started watching farscape while waiting for lexx to start. the first episode i caught was early in season 1. i watched it because it was on right before lexx which i loved for it's camp. it wasn't till the intro of scorpius that i started loving it. that character is so close to being one of the best all time villains. i rank him about as good as darth vader from the original trilogy.
lexx on the other hand had me at the first movie when they aired it on scifi channel. my favorite one is eating pattern. the story for that movie was awesome.

Agreed. Scorpius is great. My husband had the opportunity to meet the guy who plays Scorpi at a small-town comic convention (along with the woman who plays Chiana) and he is very intelligent. They sat and talked for a good half-hour.
...I especially like "Harvey," the Scorpius incarnation who lives in Crichton's head. Funny stuff.

I think the underlining appeal to Firefly is the ever present pursuit of happiness in a crazy rough world. At the heart of it all, that's what the crew is longing for. I just picked up the Hardcover and there are supposed to be TWO mini series coming out in 08, including A Shepard's Tale. Too cool.
