Ah, we know how ridiculous they are but we tend to love them. Or hate them, whoever we are.
Now, which is your favorite? My personal favorite is Ojamajo Doremi, probably because it has a really cute transformation sequence.
And if you don't like magical girl series, why not?

Sailor Moon was ridiculous, even as a kid I knew it was ridiculous, but it still holds a special place for me nonetheless. XD It's amazing how a tiara and a skimp-ified sailor suit can somehow make you completely unrecognizable. I think I liked the movies the best, they're so much more straight to the point when it comes to story and was more likely to have some new attack animations for a change.
Magic Knight Rayearth was also pretty good and I think better than Sailor Moon when it comes to plot and characters. (Though I admit I never finished that series.)
I really don't think I watched any other magical girl animes! I mostly watched girls kick ass in animes like Bubblegum Crisis, Gunsmith Cats and Armitage III. =P
Does Devil Hunter Yohko count? That wasn't a very good series, but it had moments and decent fights I guess. Basically Sailor Moon with a sword and blood!

Card Captor Sakura.
No sexy attraction, I just found it plain old charming and fun.

Sarah: My thoughts exactly! The first time I saw it, waaay back in junior high school, I HATED it - but then I watched one episode, and another, and so on until the last one. All this time I REALIZED it was RIDICULOUS - but I couldn't stop watching :) Ahh, good times! I actually caught a glimpse of one of the early episodes the other day - and I couldn't help but smile about the super-cheesy dialogue.
Can't think of any other title. Not sure if Slayers or Vampire Princess Miyu would count.

If DH Yohko counts, I'll throw my hat in for that one as well. I kind of liked that one.
"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Sailor Moon...
You know what I loved most about that show? What I absolutely loved about it?
His name.
Tuxedo Mask.
Tuxedo Mask!
His name is what he's wearing. It's brilliant!
Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Why it's Red Cape and Underwear over his pants!
Those were my two cents.

That is pretty sweet. I can't think of any other type of hero who is named for their clothing.

Surprisingly, I never watched Sailor Moon as a kid. I saw the Japanese version later on Youtube. That's the thing with these series, they're so ridiculous but you just can't stop watching!

Product PlacementI always thought the underwear thing was just because it's easier to draw underwear lines on the hips to delineate where the legs begin...

Turns out it's actually a realistic depiction- ie. people who wear tights like that DO need to wear something over them or the crotch stretches and hangs funny, so acrobats and things would usually wear something over their tights just like that.
Turns out Superman's costume isn't that weird afterall. o_O
altpromThe Mask?

BTW, in that pic he's not wearing a tuxedo he's wearing a variant of an "Evening Dress" suit called "court dress"... pluss a really stupid broad brimmed stove-pipe top-hat that is just a silly anime invention.
(Tuxedos are more modern- long jacket with no tails, black tie, usually no waistcoat, never a hat)
I am a horrible clothes nerd. :(

Probably doesn't count, since it's not technically anime and is more of a parody of the genre...but...Powerpuff Girls ftw!

I've just been looking up pics of Tuxedo Mask and he never once wears a tuxedo (always evening dress). lol!
How bizarre.
It's like having a character called "Army man" who only dresses in a sailor suit. :)

I can think of another reason why men should wear underwear over their tights. [google.is] Warning: NSFW

I'm with Ozoneocean--Cardcaptor Sakura is still one of my favorite animes (right up there with Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Vision of Escaflowne). The animation is very nice, characters are cute, and the relationships are touching. Plus the action is done very well. Just a fun show.

I can't believe I'm actually contributing... ><
I don't know if the Powerpuff girls count since you were talking about magical transformation scenes and those girls don't have those... unless you're talking about the new anime version... ah hell... yes it counts.
So how many shows fit this genre? I'm actually slightly disturbed to realize that there are enough shows like that to merit its own category.

Trust me, there are a lot of them. And they've been around for at least forty years. Furthermore, the Powerpuff Girls have their own anime in Japan, and that's very Magical Girl-esque.
In any case, I guess Cardcaptors win by default as that's the only one I've watched a considerable amount of. The fact that this genre is aimed at young girls may have something to do with it as well.
Actually no. Bewitched. Bewitched is the greatest Magical Girl series ever.

Indeed it wasn't good. It wasn't very good at all. I remember this one moment where these girls had to fight a group of winged superpowered henchmen (who composed of various characters and objects under a spell, including the lead girl's boyfriend and (I kid your not) her pet mouse) and the fighting took place in the middle of Manhattan, amongst the biggest skyscrapers. Thank goodness it happened on the one night where nobody thought of looking out the window.

Yeah I can second that. Surprised no one's mentioned Cutey Honey. The only two I bothered to watch all the way through.
And does the original sailor suited super heroine Project A-Ko count? She ties into the the whole underwear thing considering that her dad is Superman.

Sailor Moon was my favorite when I was younger. I think I like Magic Knight Rayearth more now. Though, I never liked the anime itself that much -- it was the Sega Saturn game that really got me into the story.
