Fans of "shipping" can be scary...

So you're writing a comic and it turns out to be popular. Soon you get emails from rabid fans who want romantic connections between your characters... connections that you'd never allow in your story. In fact, if you do have a set couple in your stories they write fanfics killing off the one they hate in gruesome ways so that their "preferred" coupling can take place. How much more scary can this get? Do you give your fans what they want, or do you stand by the fact that it's YOU who's writing the story? Or is there a balance between the two?

And how do you feel about these rabid "shippers" in general?

I don't remember the title, but this vaguely reminds me of a Stephen King story where a writer is "rescued" by a fan of his books who then proceeds to break both his ankles and imprison him until he changes something in a book he wrote (in this case, he killed off her favorite character and she wants him back)...

the book/ movie was "Misery" f'n sick story btw!

but yeah, i keep writing/creating the way i have been the
whole time & hope that the ppl reading will keep reading
(nor go crazy & kidnap me) for the same reasons they were
reading before, & trust that they understand that everything
i write in my story is for the betterment & advancement of
the story.

if it comes down to a face 2 face explanation, just the simple
fact that they're not the only ppl who invent specific scenarios
for their favorite characters (romatic or otherwise) & it would be
completely impossible for me to appease everybody's fantasy.

if it became a matter of life & death, then i would probably make
alternate dimentions as a side strip that would appease the demented
fan

I'm used to this kind of crazy behavior after a couple of years in the Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom. People can be downright nasty about their preferred ship, which is, well. stupid.

but hey, I say just let 'em have fun. I'd try to be chill about it. I've actually got some canon crack planned out for my story already, so~

That was my favorite thing about plastic, there was main character/bad girl shippers and main character/girlfriend shippers that were on pretty opposite parts of the fence.

But yeah with Koshou on the crazy zutarians, in fact the episode before the season finale seemed to be making fun of that fandumb lol.

But who am i to talk i thought azula was totally into ty lee.

IT'S LOVE ZOMG!! !

Luckily, I have not yet had to deal with that. Might not help that my comic hasn't really made sense up to this point (mostly because of poor planning, and poor artwork)

But I'm definitely fixing that.

Now, if I had a "shipper", I mean, I wouldn't mind if it was like, some fan-art of their fan-character with mine. As long as they don't like, go too far, and threaten me by saying they'll hack my site or something if I don't make them in love, then I'll have no problems.

However, if they choose to do so, they'll have to deal with me. >:)

Totally.

And it's a waste of time and frustrating, too. Some of my favorite TV shows have wasted entire episodes and story arcs on their "will they hook up" tangents. It's the worst part of The Office, and the reason I won't watch Chuck.

I just can't understand why anyone would get so worked up over the relationships of fictional people. And "shipping" is about the dumbest term I've ever heard, aside from "blog" and "tweet".

...I uh. I actually was one of those "crazy zutarians" and I was referring to all of the nutjob shippers collectively, not any one group. everyone was pretty batshit in that fandom. but I can see why you would think I was talking about them. >>

also, Azula/Ty Lee 4evuh.

It's a fan who supports a relationship between two characters in a story (whether the writer wants it or not). There are a lot of "shipping" fanfics out there, anything from Pokemon's "Ash and Misty" stories to stuff like "Captain Picard and Data"...

yeah... creepy...

Then there's the Harvest Moon game series that involves BOTH KINDS OF SHIPPING. You ship stuff from your farm for money, and you "ship" your farmer with a village guy/girl that YOU like...

I'll go shut up now...

Haha! Yes! I used to love those games. Sadly, all the marriable male characters look like women now due to them anime fans and their bishies. I always married the doctor anyway, cause I'm a cheap bitch.

ANYWHO. I doubt my comic would ever reach that kinda popularity, buttt if it did I could so see that happening. There's a lot of "shipping" as some say, since my comic is partly about four generations that are formed from two couples blah blah blah. Pretty much all the relationships are predetermined though, and I could not like them changed. I'm not really one of those people who'll change a storyline just because fans want me to.

Most relationships in my comic are between people with opposing views to show how everyone can find common ground despite a difference in belief, but I could see some crazy shippers being like "No, these two are both ___ so they're meant to be together!!" Unfortunately, There's always gonna be those two characters that seem SO PERFECT TOGETHER GUYS OMG and all your fans are going to flock toward that couple, even though there's already another couple forming involving one of those characters.

If that's the dumbest thing you've heard in a long time consider yourself lucky.

Oh yeah, Shipping. For the most part I just think it's annoying. I don't encounter it a lot though, so for the most part I'm indifferent.

I tried to be indifferent as well, but when you've got a star trek freak for a friend who thinks Picard should be romantically involved with a very lifelike android, you get creeped out... brrr....

I don't think I've ever had abusive shippers. They were all leaning toward the couples that were already together or had an established love interest/crush. The main shippings are always FrannyxJohnny and Mee-Ran-DahxGin. ^^

Though, there are some CecilxFranny sometimes. =D

But, anyway, as long as their favorite couples in their mind aren't out of this world, then it's fine.

Back on dA, a friend of mine said that my two main male characters (of the comic I have here now) would look good in lemon slash or something like that. I know what slash is, but any fruit related stuff, I'm all confused about. At first I was like 'Wait....really?' and then I thought about it and then I was like 'WHAT'.

I have nothing against yaoi or yuri or what-have-you, but those two would make a disastrous gay couple.

It burns, doesn't it? Makes your brain burnt black stuff caked onto the underside of your cranium just picturing it. Lemon horrifies me so--fan Lemons, the most. Especially between two straight men/women who hate eachother (referring to her own characters in this one).

I'm not even anti-yaoi or shoujo-ai.
I'm just pro-they-won't-ever-be-like-that-with-that-character.

I once encountered a yaoi fan who wrote short description about two of my male characters comic how she imagined them taking a shower and kissing passionately... And the fact is that my male characters are just a toddler and a kid. D:
