Jeebus, these super mutant overlords are more like behemoths! And the Albino Radscorpians! These new random encounter creatures are actually very hard to kill... I love it :D Broken Steel is waaaay worth it just for the new creatures alone.

Yeah, Broken Steel is an excellent expansion. Not only does it extend the main storyline (and solves a major gripe brought up in this thread), but the additional quests feel very complete and satisfying. The airbase is epic. There's also the benefit of a higher level cap, which is offset by some hard as hell new enemies, which are in turn offset by some awesome new weapons.
They've also made changes to some of the 'fabric' of the game, there are a few new minor buildings here and there, you run into new people in the wastelands, etc. There are some bugs with it (like Three Dog might talk about quests or changes you haven't done yet) but it's certainly worth the 800pts/10 bucks.
That's funny that Inkmoney said he he hasn't connected with any of the characters... because I came to like quite a lot of them (Charon especially). Sometimes there was a difficult decision because I needed to end a quest but didn't want to harm a character I liked. He does have a point though that the exporing is by far the most fun part of the game, and strangely addicting. I like the random event system they have set up, because then exporing around means you stumble across interesting things if you take the time to walk everywhere.
Two more DLC are on the way. I think one is called Point Look and the other is Mothership Zeta (and involves an alien abduction)... it will be interesting to see how they handle those, but I'll probably buy them. :]

My bet is that the massive surge of radiation causes him to mutate, a scenario made possible through the wonders of video game science.
Damn it, I just realised that I need to complete the game again before I see any of this. Doesn't help that I restarted again recently, either.
Edit: Forgot to ask, but do the new enemies show up during the rest of the game, or only after you finish?

Sounds like it, the Fallout wiki, posted earlier, stated that someone had encountered the new Enclave soldiers during the original final mission.

You can now send in Fawkes, Charon, etc. Either way the radiation explosion sends you into a coma for 2 weeks. It's still a bit lame with the coma, but less so because you can actually do the sensible option. (Ron Perelmen doesn't think much of that choice though)

They show up in normal gameplay, although I think they're coded not to show up til you're around level 17 or 18, since they're higher-level versions of same enemies.
Oh yes, forgot to mention, you get to see more of Liberty Prime. :]

holy shit fuck. Alien Abduction??? That is the coolest thing ever. The random encounter with the firelance pistol was pretty epic for me. I was at the bottom of the stairs of the WKML Radio Station and I heard this BOOM and look behind me to see a track of smoke leading towards me. I turn around quickly and BAM! This green explosion right infront of my eyes. It was cool.

That's funny that Inkmoney said he he hasn't connected with any of the characters... because I came to like quite a lot of them (Charon especially).
I find it odd that you specified Charon, since he literally doesn't have a personality. For those unfamiliar with the character, I'm not being obtuse or anything: his defining characteristic is that he's more or less "brainwashed" and exhibits no outward emotions of any significance. It's certainly endearing when he attacks Azrak... azrug... um... his former employer without a word, but I don't see much to him to attach to. I'd imagine it's the same kind of attachment one would make with the dog: he really doesn't have a personality to speak of, but there is just something about having someone along during the long walks to new locations.
I've beaten the game by now, and while the characters grew to be a lot more interesting than they seemed at first, I still didn't really connect with them. There's only so much you can do with technology, sure, but it bugged me when I played through as evil that Threedog would talk about how much he hated me, but treat me like I'm his best friend if I went to visit him just because I finished the quest he asked me to do. Though I did get some satisfaction out of just killing him at that point, since it was fun to listen to Margaret the Technician try to do witty banter occasionally while they looked for a new DJ.

Maybe it's his lack of personalty that endears him to people? Since without a personality, he could never disagree with or disobey the player. Or the player simply makes up their own personality.
I liked him because he made things dead. That was an incredibly useful trait of his.

Edit: I haven't looked at the fallout wiki for ages. No wonder why I thought they were rumours.

Actually, it's only a 537 rad surge. In the magical world of Fallout, you can survive that with minor radiation poisoning.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. :] He was brainwashed to be loyal to his contract holder, not to have no personality. Charon has got plenty of personality (though he needs to be your companion for you to see it), and he's not even very good at being blindly loyal to you.
If people in underworld try to talk to him, his only reply (no matter what they've said) is "NO." If I do something bad like kill an innocent while he's following me, he'll get upset (and attack me if I fire him after). He mumbles and grumbles as he walks around with you, and although clearly a grumpy person with no sense of humor (he didn't like my joke of you're fired, just kidding) he sure loves killing stuff. He even shoots things after they're dead and says "do you like that, huh?" Plus there's unintentionally funny things like his coming into my house and saying stuff like "I don't like the look of this place." He'll even yell "holy shit" if I shoot a midair grenade :3 Granted, you can insert a lot of your own ideas or something onto him, he has less personality than other characters- but I like that in a character too, especially one who is gonna be following me around for hours.
I suppose it may depend on how involved you get with their stories. I replayed a bit of Oblivion lately, and saw the enormous difference between the NPCs in that game and in Fallout. Oblivion I didn't give a damn about anyone, most of the characters were virtually indistinguishable from one another and there were far too many of them. In Fallout I felt more like their world and stories were better, and there were fewer of them overall so they all became more important. That helped me identify with them much more.

Yeah, I (unintentionally) did this glitch where I got Fawkes and then Charon (me and Charon had the T51-b (second set from the Anchorage dlc) and I felt so cool) and then somehow I got that BoS lady, I forget her name, and we were all in Power Armour and pwn3d so many n00b raid3rz it was sick. And then when I did the last DLC and they all went back to their places or whatever, I couldn't do it again )=
I personally liked Fawkes the best, his lines were so good.
Like he says "Be aware of the present moment", "There is safety, in mindfulness", and "In all things, a calm heart must prevail". And then he says stuff like "Just...stand...STILL!", "You're here, you're here, STOP HIDING!", and "AAAAAAAAIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!"
I love that big dude so much.
Just so you know, I got Dogmeat and kept him when I replayed it as a Mad Max character, there is so much stuff in that game that's from Mad Max, it felt like I was playing a Mad Max game... except there are no drivable cars... so not really, but still... kinda... not that much... but it is... sorta.

Hill billy ghouls gotta die too. Plus there's a major military presence here in the south (thought I doubt they're going to include Fort Polk since it's nowhere near the bayous). But man, Broken Steel has made stuff hard. Ever been running around and suddenly you're under attack by three albino radscorpions? Did you live? Yeah, me neither.
Only thing worse is I spent all this time dressing up Clover in Talon company armor, an enclave officer hat and some tortoise shell glasses, and a plasma rifle and she still charges in headfirst with that sword at enclave bases where she proceeds to be set on fire by a heavy incinerator and cut down by a laser gatling because she aggros them like crazy. I'll be sitting there shooting them with an alien blaster or the tesla cannon and they wont frakking care.
You know what? Screw here. I'm going back to Charon. At least he knows what it means to stay stealthed.

Well, I think the thing is the new creatures have evolved faster than our weapons to fight them. Ghoul Reavers? Took three shots with an Alien Blaster, the thing that was almost a guaranteed one hit kill on anything before. The Xialong Assault Rifle used to kill Enclave tesla troopers with three bursts. Now it takes a magazine and a half to slow them down.
I think their stats such as HP and damage resistance have gone up far too high, and we haven't been given any new guns or armor that can effectively compensate. The Infiltrator is cool, but it's weak. The Gauss Rifle has that almost guaranteed knockdown, but it's single fire with an inconveniently long reload time. By the time you get in close to use the auto-axe the fight is probably already decided, and not in your favor.
Raiders still go down without much fuss, but everything else seems to have taken a few lessons in whoop-assery, and we're still running around with automatic and energy rifles that max out at under 100 damage.

Try using Eugene or a Gatling Laser. I'm finding that to be a good alternative to just trying to gun them down with small guns. Big guns are the way to go with these things.
Or, you could shoot the things with a dart gun... and then run the heck out of there.

I think Point Lookout will be in Maryland. There's some swampy territory there, and I'm sure after a nuclear war just about any swampy place can 'revert' to hillbilly state. Just like any desert place can 'revert' to cowboys. (Although by that logic, the capital wasteland should have been full of hillbillies and not cowboys.)
The only new enemy I find tough is the ghoul reaver, because you only find them in close quarters. The others you can creep up on at a distance and a shot or two from a plasma gun will do them in, or dart them and keep backing away. I hate the metro anyway, once I mapped out DC I never go in the tunnels because I find them horribly boring to wander around. So, very few reavers encountered in my game. :]
Charon is the best. I like to give him a heavy incinerator. He has so much fun.
