Holy crap baby they're KING again.

Let's all discuss the insane amount of stuff that was just announced. Sonic in Brawl, Wiiware Final Fantasy with Gamecube-graphics, DS and Download station for the Wii, 12 Player Mario Kart with halfpipes and motorcycles and best of all, a remake of my all time favorite Kirby game!

That's right, the DS is getting a brand new version of Kirby Superstar! I can't wait to replay the Great Cave Offensive and Milky Way Wishes on the go. :D

They've been blogging it all day. Videos and everything.

To summarize this new information:

Wii games:
- Smash Bros Brawl will feature Sonic as a playable character.
- Brawl will also include some form of online cooperative play.
- Brawl is delayed in Japan. Its official US release date is changed to "To be decided".
- Wii Mario Kart also features motorcycles as a selectable vehicle.
- Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 is being produced for Wii instead of PS3 (cost reasons)
- Super Mario Stadium Baseball announced.
- Wii music was shown.
- Plenty of Mario Galaxy was shown.
- Disaster: Day of Crisis was shown.
- Mario & Sonic Olympics shown.
- Wii fit is dated and priced for Japan. It'll cost about $75 on December 1st.
- Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles shown.

- Nintendo is now serious about online. They're establishing a service center to help people get their Wii/DS connected to the internet.

Wii channels:
- DS Downloads: Download DS demos through your Wii to your DS.
- Check Mii Out: Apparently a place to look at other peoples' Miis and have contests or something.
- The Everybody Votes channel will soon allow people to rank their favorite games, and search for games they will like.

Wiiware (downloadable games):
- A spinoff of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be downloadable through Wiiware. It's not clear if this is THE Crystal Chronicles that was being developed for Wii, but they make it sound like this is something different.
- A Pokemon Farm game where you can transfer your Diamond/Pearl Pokemon and raise them in a farm environment.
- A Magnetica-like Wii game.
- Puzzle games like Doctor Mario will be available.
- A cute new Ping Pong game.
- Star Soldier R (a scrolling shooter).
- Iwata says that over 100 Wiiware titles have been proposed.

DS Games:
- Kirby Superstar DS
- Advance Wars DS 2 was shown. The cast is new and the style has changed.
- Mario & Sonic Olympics shown.
- Dragon Quest 9 shown.

Milky Way Wishes scared the crap out of me because the badguy was just PERFECTLY designed. Also, the battle with possessed Metaknight was downright BADASS. If they can maintain that level of style in the remake, I'd wet my pants immediately.

...Okay I just have to praise the entire game now! I loved the Great Cave Offensive right down to one of the bosses that was designed after an RPG and you took turns hitting each other. The mini-games were short but neat as well especially the Megaton thing where if you did well enough Kirby would SMASH THE EARTH IN HALF.

Man, Superstar is pretty much KIRBY GAME KING and no other Kirby game has topped it since.

Naw, PS3'll pick up when some of the better games come out.

Also when everyone has a Wii and therefore don't buy anymore, and when people realize that certain games can't be forced to work with the Wiimote and therefore stop trying.

EDIT: Also you have to note that game developers have been notoriously bad about saying that a game's only going to be for one system lately, and then making it for all of them plus another one that doesn't technically exist.

EDIT2: You'll also note that this is Capcom we're talking about, and they've been pulling this same shit with Resident Evil for a while now.

That'll happen when developers realize that the PS3 is a vastly different machine from both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. The complex Cell engine has yet to show it's potential, and it's a shame since it's powerful. It'll also happen when developers realize that no one wants to buy a PSP port to the DS.

As you can see, development has heavily switched over to the Wii side. But is it quality vs. quantity? Maybe a lot of those games aren't very good? I don't see why its bad-game-ratio would be any worse than the PS2, last generation's most successful console. And looking over the upcoming release schedule, I know there will be enough good games for me.

What's more, I think the Wii's success will perpetuate. It would take a long string of nothing but awful games to stop it, and even if that happens, the fallout won't be seen for a while, based on the development cycle of the average game.

Seriously? Jesus, Nintendo really is back on top. After Sony has so thoroughly dominated the industry the past decade or so, it's amazing to not only see them dropping to the bottom, but Nintendo starting to reclaim its former glory. Of course, I don't think we'll ever again see the day when "Nintendo" is synonymous with "video game", but as an admitted Big N fanboy, I'm glad to see them doing right outside of consoles that fit in your pocket for a change.

I do feel a bit sorry for Sony, though. I don't really have the "Sony Love" that some people do, but my PS1 and 2 have never done me wrong. I just really lost the faith after that whole PSP thing. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Nintendo had really banked on the Virtual Boy (not to compare the PSP to it, but some similarities exist if you're looking for them). If Nintendo had tried to get me to take that damn thing seriously, I don't think I would have bought a 64 before I bought a Playstation.

Yes, it is quality vs. quantity. I've seen 5 good Wii games so far: Twilight Princess (Which might not count, since it's also for the Gamecube) Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Monster Hunter 3 and RE Umbrella Chronicles (And knowing Capcom, neither of the two will probably stay on one system). Everything else I've seen was either terrible or mediocre.

The PS3 has God of War 3, all five of the Final Fantasy XIII games, Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2, MGS4, Resistance, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (Not sure if I should count this, since it is a remake. Everyone really likes it though, so I'll go ahead), Warhawk, White Knight Story, and probably the next Kingdom Hearts game. I'm going to leave out cross-platform games.

Honestly, I'm not going to argue PS3 versus 360. So far as I can tell it's personal preference with those two. 360 has a few more (Not too many, as your own statistics show) exclusives( and I can't really see that it has any more good ones, they look about the same), and otherwise the games for both are generally cross-platform (Armored Core 4, Resident Evil 5 are a few good ones). PS3 has better graphics, but is a lot more expensive. So yeah, I'd say the two pretty much even out.

(I went a little farther out into the future than you did to look at these, and I also tried to pick games that will be very popular, and not just ones that I would like. Also, I haven't seen every single game that's coming out for any of the systems, so I probably left a few out.)

I think I'm going to agree with you, as much as I hate it. The Wii does have a few things going for it, primarily it's comparitively low price (I actually got mine for $150 dollars, and this was some time last year), and the fact that it will have a large number of Nintendo games (Nintendo owns a lot of characters, and a lot of them are very popular.) However, I'm going to still have to say that it's overall inferior to both the PS3 and 360. Every game I've played on it had awkward controls, it has worse graphics than either of the other two systems, and most of the games look crappy once you get past the fact that it's Mario or Sonic or Link that you're playing as.

EDIT2: Ok, I checked, and there are actually only 3 FFXIII games, and only two of them are PS3 exclusive. I guess I was wrong on that point.

EDIT3: Mario Galaxy looked reasonable too, I'll give you guys that one. However, I'm also giving the PS3 Folklore, since I forgot about it before (I played the Demo, and it was fun).

Okay Lord Shplane, the first issue is that you're predicting a lot of hits out of games that haven't come out yet. Only a few of the PS3 have actually hit the market. To be fair, many of those Wii games haven't either. But if we were to turn the clock back several months, would Lair be on your list? We know now that a good game isn't always guaranteed. My point is that you can say a bunch of the Wii's future games will be crap but the truth is you haven't played any of them.

Second is the issue that the quality of a game is subjective. While some may consider Dewey's Adventure to be average, others may enjoy it. I know people who were disappointed with Heavenly Sword. Metroid Prime 3 is not a perfect game for everybody. I hate Final Fantasy. It's all opinion.

You can conveniently forget Super Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing, Trauma Center 2, Mario Kart Wii, Samba de Amigo, Battalion Wars 2, Soul Calibur Legends, Nights, Ghost Squad, FF Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Quest Swords, and Disaster: Day of Crisis because they're not games you are looking forward to, but you can never argue that the Wii doesn't have a big list of high-profile upcoming games... Games that have just as much chance of being good as the PS3 games you mentioned.

To my recollection we've been talking about what games we're excited for, not the system itself. As much as I disagree with some of the decisions made when creating the PS3, you don't see me putting it down every chance I get. I could actually foresee myself owning one within a year when I'm convinced Sony isn't sabotaging the platform.

You are quite entitled to wanting the industry to make games you like. To be honest, I hope you get plenty of the kind of games you like. I don't want to see the classic gaming experience die out either. Rest assured, it won't. Those PS3 games you want will come out no matter how much you defame the Wii on message boards.

Ok Hawk, you've made some good points, especially concerning the quality of games that aren't out yet. However, when you say that I "conveniently forgot" games, I can assure you that I didn't do it just to not do it. There were games for both systems that I wanted to add but didn't for varying reasons. There were even more that I simply forgot. Crystal Chronicles, SC Legends, and Animal Crossing look reasonably good, but I really didn't think about them. I've actually never heard of some of the other ones, and I haven't heard of all the games for the PS3. I'm sure I left out plenty of good games on both, and I'm sure that not all of the games I mentioned or the games you mentioned will be good.

Are you sure? The Wii being cheaper to develop for could quite easily cause game developers on it to make worse games. The developers who don't want to spend the money to make it for other systems probably won't want to spend the money on anything else, leading to a lower quality game.

What will scare off a lot of developers is that the Wii has practically no online system. No "Wii Live" or "Wii Home"; I'm not sure what the Hell the "Everybody Votes" channel was supposed to prove, but I haven't seen anything come out of it. It seems that Nintendo is aware of that fact, and personally that's why I think Smash Bros. Brawl was delayed while they get off their asses and get things into gear. Games like Gears of War or Halo (not necessarily those specific games, but games similar to them) can be done on the Wii, but developers don't want to do them because those games are popular largely because of a robust online match system, which the Wii just doesn't accomodate.

No, I'm not saying that it's a good thing. I'm saying that developers who are willing to make the effort are more likely to spend the time and effort to make it good on other fronts. This isn't to say that the Wii won't or can't have good games. I'm saying that a lot of developers will go to the Wii because it's cheap, and these will most likely be the same developers that slack on other parts of design.

However, someone who is willing to take the effort on one part is far more likely to make the effort on other ones, aren't they? A webcomic author who slacks on one part of their comic is often more likely to not put as much effort in on other fronts, aren't they? Generally, if you don't want to do one part of something because it's too difficult, you won't do everything else properly either. Apathy in one part generally translates to apathy in others.

As for "A real artist would be willing to overcome the challenge," wouldn't someone who is truly commited take whatever kind of pen they could get? If you really want to do something, and are willing to do it the hard way, you're more likely to do it right, because you're more likely to take your time and not cut corners.

So, what I'm saying is that those who will make the extra effort to make a PS3 game are more likely to make the extra effort to make a better game in general.

Is the fact that PS3 games are harder to make a good thing? No. It will drive developers away, and lead to less games.

Does it mean that the games that DO come out for it will probably be better? Yes. Those who will work hard on one thing are generally more likely to work hard on others.

Is it possible that game developers will make good games for the Wii? Yes. It's possible for them to make good games for any system.

Does that mean that they will? Probably not. If you go the easy and cheap way in one part, you're more likely to do it in others.
