I recentaly started making my own game with RPG Maker 2000. And I'm having a lot of fun with it. So I thought to myself I wonder if other people do this. So has anyone ever tried making there own game? What program did you use? What kind of game? Tell me all about your game. And if you never made one maybe you can use some of the resources on here.

I used to make lots of games in QBasic.
Now, I've made an RPG or two with RPG Maker 2003.
I also have part of a platformer I've made in Game Maker 6.
I love making games. It's this kind of itch inside me. I just wish I had more time for it.

I've done artwork for a few small developers around here. as for my own games, though, I haven't completed anything since high school when I was programing RPGs, casino games, and action titles for the graphing calculators we used. That was a long time ago, though. I played around a bit with C++ in college, but programming isn't really my thing. The extent of my programming now is some action script in Flash.

It was my big hobby before webcomics. Wrote about 20 unfinished games (some of which where sonic fangames) and a few miniture arcade games with The Games Factory and RPG Maker before I got too limited by the tools but lacked the time to learn a real programing language. I'm currently pushing to learn C++ for games development but can't find decent resources.

Does anyone have any of there games on the Internet? I have seen a few sites that have downloadable games on them.
I look forward to the EMD! game.
Unfortunately, game making is a side project that doesnt get done a whole lot. Apart from a lack of willing voice actors, I could probably have the basic game done within 8-10 months if I had more time and patience. Since I dont, people will get it in june 2007.
I look forward to the EMD! game.

If only i had programing knowledge, if USFDS was a game it would be not unlike GTA, except you would be rewarding for killing and raping the civilian population of invaded alien planets, because aliens don't have rights and their misfortune if entertaining.
Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.

equinoxTitchDont write off The Games Factory. Once you know how to make a static engine, you can create virtually anything. Seriously, just make your own engine in it and you wont be limited anymore.

Oh trust me, if I had accsess to my games library, I could show you things I can do with TGF that would blow your mind. It just doesn't have the capacity to handle projects of the size and scope I have in mind. Games with MMO capabilites and high level editing tools. TGF just can't handle it.

equinoxTitchOh, your talking about MMO games. Yeah, TGF cant handle those. It's still pretty good for 2d platformers though. I prefer mutlimedia fusion over TGF though. It just has so many more options.

I never really "got" MMF. The interface just felt really strange to me. It IS possible to make an online game in TGF using MOO or Direct Connect addons, it might be convinced, with a LOT of kluding to do what I want. I think I'm better off coding the whole thing from scratch to make it efficiant.
TGF lacks a decent level of memory control. My last big TGF project fell through because the complex code combined with the level size made it error due to lack of memory. Altough I did get my level editor Partialy [thekidsarentalright.org] working [thekidsarentalright.org]

I create games in my spare time, when I'm not playing them or working on homework. I hope to eventually go into a career of making videogames. Yes, yes, I know, thats like saying I want to be a fireman or something, but it's been my dream since I first encountered C++ in between 8th and 9th grade, and I've advanced quite alot since then.
I currently have a fully working and fleshed out game engine written in Java that enables you to make a Myst-like game. Starting this year when I take Computer Science Independant Study I plan on making the interface easier to use, and then I plan on finishing the year by actually making a fully fleshed out game.
The online tools like RPG Maker and such are great for hobbyists, or people that have too short of an attention span to actually learn how to make REAL games, but nothing can compare to the freedom and joy that actually hard-coding a game into your computer can bring. I love doing it, and my dream is to be paid to do it one day.

My little brother and I used to make games in RPG maker 2000 and 2003. We never actually finished any of them though.
I do have friends that are programming their own mech game and MMORPG. If they ever get a working game out, I’ll post the links.

You know, I really fancy making a honest to god war simulation based on this rant In either real time or turn based strategy format, I had some great ideas about how it could be made into a workable game.

They acctauly did make a game kind of like that. Where you had to balance your public approval rating to keep funding to buy troops and so on. I don't think it did very well though.

I made a game once with RPG Maker XP. It was really easy to beat and only 3 hours long, though. I wasn't really proud of it. I started making something in RPG Maker 2003, but I never finished due to a virus. We had to completely erase everything on the computer. I haven't downloaded any RPG Maker programs since then.

Creating and playing a game you created/modded inside an online competitive community is much better than creating a game no one will see except yourself.
.: mlai :.
I got to agree there!!
I fiddled around with rpg maker 2000 once, and created this rpg that I'd like to think was decent and stuff. however... I quickly realized that I had no way to put it online at the time, because it was such a huge game. meaning nobody besides me would be able to see it, unless I brought my friends over to play it. and some of my friends aren't even rpg fans. So it was like, my efforts was for nothing...
Now, I've created some clothing mods and stuff for things like Sims 2, the Movies, etc... all the feedback and the easy sharing I do, makes it much more worthwhile.
I'm on hitatus while I redo one of my webcomics. Be sure to check it out when I'n done! :)

I make games all the time with Game Maker. It's just that I never finish anything and most of what I show off are demos of concepts that could have gone a lot farther. I just like to expiriment mostly, I never aim to finish a game. Here's some of what I've done:
A Zelda demo I never finished:

and...
A Yoshi platformer "Mario and Luigi" style: http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/rover_the_cat/YoshiGame.zip
No, I don't just make fan games, lol. I do original stuff, it's just I have nothing that's in playable form at the moment.

I had a pretty good game going on in rpgmaker2003, but it's on hiatus (or cancelled) due to the database being deleted from a blackout....currently there's a Haruhi rpg fangame that I would like to get done. I'm also thinking on a visual novel adventure featuring myself. :D LOADS OF FUN!

I created two games in RPG Maker 2000, but I look back at those games with a bit of disgust due to the horrid writing. I tried a third attempt with Rpg Maker 2003, but made the game too complex to want to finish (custom material is great but can lead to problems later on). Now I'm just working on drawing better in order to convey the revised version of this third story into comic form.
That's "Dr. BlkKnight" to all of you.

I was also using rpg maker 2003 to make a fantasy rpg, but i ended up loosing it all in a computer crash. I was pretty sad cause I had spent a lot of time building some pretty complex triggers for just the first area alone. I love games that unlock special or secret items/areas/paths depending on the options you choose in game.

I actually did the same thing as chris
I only had about 15 minutes of gameplay but there were like 15 to 20 different storylines. It was totally choose your own adventure style. Depending on who you talked to or in what order you'd have a completely different game.
Like you're summoned to the kings castle so he can give you a quest to save the princess, and you could go to the castle and get the quest, or you could tell him to blow it out his ass and then he'd have the gaurds arrest you, only they didn't just arrest you, they chased you, so if you managed to escape the place you'd be a fugitive, or if you were paticularily nimble you could trick the soldiers and fet to a room that normally would be gaurded, or you could not go to the palace at all, you could go to the tavern and have a beer, but if you got too drunk they wouldn't serve you anymore you had to go to the inn for more beer where you'd run into mercenaries, or you could try to trick the bartender into giving you more beer and you'd get into a fight with one of the patrons. There were like a ton of other options.
I eventually just gave up because everything was just so complex I couldn't figure out how to keep it going, and it was taking hours of work to get minutes of gameplay

I actually did think up a tabletop RPG thing years back, and I did use Legos to represent it (of course, I used Legos for pretty much everything from cake decorations to substitute chess pieces at the time, so...). The rules were painfully simple; you create your own spells/abilities for your character (hadn't taken the time to make up set ones yet). You give yourself six abilities, with the weakest or least useful at the bottom, and the good ones at the 6. Each turn you roll a 6-sided die, and whatever number it lands on you can do up to that level of spell (you can do a weaker one in case it's got some kinda side-effect). I didn't really develop any system for anything beyond basic fighting, but it was a fun way to waste an afternoon.
