Ever Played a Horrible Game Just Cause?

Not so much of a question as something all of you have probably done, probably.

So, have you guys ever played a horrible, horrible game just because. Be it either you expected the game to be awesome and you'll stick by it no matter what, or be it how everyone is talking about this game and how bad it is that it becomes so bad it's good, or be it, that you want to see where the developers fucked up and what they did wrong.

I have a story for each of these. I played Driv3r because I was a fan of the series and I played it no matter what the reviews said, even if it meant having to deal with a game that was seriously flawed. As for the second? The Big Rig effect. If you don't know, Big Rigs is possibly the world's worst game . I played it for the laughs.

The last situation? American McGee's Bad Day LA. The concept was brilliant, the graphics were stylish, yet the finished product was something that would put Big Rigs to shame. I played the game because I was interested in the art direction and the concept, yet ended up coming up with ways of how to better the game.

Deadly Towers for NES. I only learned how horrid this game was after renting it on an uninformed lark once. Absurd difficulty, no in game explanations, weak 'handles like a shopping cart' hero coupled with enemies that take half a dozen hits to die, nonsensical massive mazes... the list goes on.

Yet I rented it twice more. Why? Partially because my young 8 year old brain couldn't understand how something could've be this bad and unplayable and therefore wanted to conquer it even more. But I couldn't. Deadly Towers is just impossible.

Another game for the NES that I did something similar with basically the same experience was Hydlide. You get a fraction of health. It runs out by itself shortly. You must increase it by the mother of all level grinds in the course of several minutes. You attack enemies by walking into them without any other action other than the attack button being on. Sometimes they arbitrarily hit you and you lose even more of that tiny health sliver. Therefore, you could easily perish before leveling up based on nothing more than pure luck. It was insane.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Sonic Heroes. I liked the Sonic Adventure series, but I hated how there were all those dumb shooting or fishing or searching for emeralds levels. Sonic Heroes seemed to be a straight running and platforming affair, just with three dudes to choose from.

...

I blame the level design. It was just poorly done all around and made the slippery controls practically suicidal...

Final Fantasy X-2. If I wanted stupid girl-power I'd watch the Powerpuff Girls.

Also the gameplay in battle was pretty hard to control

Only reason I played it was because a friend gave it to me. :/

I didn't find that game that bad, actually. It was a letdown compared to Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, yeah, but I didn't find it that bad, compared to Shadow the Hedgehog, anyway.

Anyway, I haven't played any bad games just because. I generally tend to stay away from bad-looking games.

For some reason I kept playing Mass Effect. I'm not sure how it ended up being one of the five RPGs I've actually played all the way through. I guess if it had been the length of a standard RPG I probably wouldn't have beaten it.

I've played - and re-played - FFX-2. I knew it wouldn't be very good the first time, but I'm a completionist, so I had to get 100%. I got 87% complete the first time through, and then it became a matter of hardheaded stubbornness to get the missing %.

I'll agree that the game seemed worse than it actually was because of my own expectations, but I'd still say comfortably that it's not a game worth owning.

I've tried twice to force myself through the Halo 1 campaign. I don't think the game is bad, I just didn't really want to play through it. Yet somehow I felt that obligation to try to finish the game for the same reason you did... To see what the fuss is about.

I still haven't finished it.

I actually went and played "Eragon", even though the movie sucked so bad I cried. I didn't like the beginning levels, all you did was go someplace to see some cinematics roll by. But battling Durza was funny, but not at all good. (all he did was cirlce around saying that "you should've joined me" or "i'm going to kill you", something to that affect.) ^__^

I played Halo 2 to see what the big deal was. I forced myself to keep playing thinking that maybe the next level would reveal why everybody thinks its so great.

But it wasn't and eventually I just said screw it and played something that wasn't average-at-best.

Online is basically why everybody thinks its great.

But then again, even that's horribly messed up. :/

And it's funny, because now that it's not pretty much the only FPS with online multiplayer, it's fairly mediocre.

The first game didn't originally have online multiplayer, either, so what made it so popular?

The hype? The groovy look of the body armour? Or maybe it really was a good game?

I dunno, every game forum I see has people calling Battlefield 2 a piece of crap, even Battlefield 2 forums, but it was still quite a popular game.

I liked it :)

Maybe people just like to complain about popular things? That wouldn't be too much of a shock lol!
I know I do. ;)

A shiz game I played: Altered Beast. Destruction Derby. Also: Micky Mouse; castle of Illusion, Chakan, and Galahad.
-All of those last ones are Sega cartridges that I still own.

Oh God. I was looking for a new game for my X-Box, because I don't have many games for it, and discovered a very cool looking game called Enclave. I got home, popped it into my X-Box, and...

...It was terrible. The controls were sloppy, the AI was apparently schizophrenic, and the traps/puzzles were all completely luck-based.

There's a Prison Tycoon? Do we have Porn Studio Tycoon yet?

On a similar note, The Movies was pretty bad. I still play it though, I want to love it, it's so good in theory. But no, it's a constant disappointment. So were the Dungeon Keeper games, I wanted to like those too.

Halo 1's campaign is not very good. The other ones have less repitition and backtracking, so they're a bit more worthwhile.

Also, Gekioh: Shooting King for the PS1. It's an arcade shoot em up, it gives you infinite lives, and it's still almost impossible to beat.

Another, Hotel Dusk for Nintendo DS. I got to a point in the first chapter where there was nothing I could do, so I quit.

Played those as well, they were better than the first but still completely bland.

I thought of another, Silent Hill. Everyone goes on about how great they are and they just aren't.

. . .

Well, the second one was but none of the others.

I thought the film was pretty cool as well.

I really liked Hotel Dusk... though true, there came times where you were just wandering around the place looking for whatever it was that would trigger the next sequence of events.

actually, Mass Effect's length and story depend on how many and what side-missions you do. some of them actually have something to do with the main plot, and are quite interesting concerning it. if you go straight for Saren, the game's not that long. if you comb through most of the side missions, however, you'll find lots of good info concerning the plot and other things.
