What program are you using? I have a feeling it's MS Paint, and while some people can do magnificent things with it, they're usually pretty advanced to master such a limited program. Seems like you'd benefit more from something like Photoshop or the GIMP (free equivalent that I have installed on this computer; Photoshop is sitting on my laptop) to help with your problem. They both have specialized tools to make editing a lot cleaner.

While I'm not quite sure what you're talking about from your example. If you're using MS Paint, make sure the selection tool is set for a transparent background and your eraser color matches the background. If that isn't the case, please clarify further. Regardless, if you are using MS Paint take Esu's advice and get a program that uses layers.
That's "Dr. BlkKnight" to all of you.

Like BlkKnight said, make sure the selection is set to transparent. If that's not the case, you should download MTPaint. It's just like MSPaint, but with layers.
