Ya. I was shocked to read about that a few days ago all over my Twitter feeds. Couldn't believe it.
But then It's still not really "out" yet, is it?
Still, I never lost faith.

I'm now fully expecting Gamestop to announce preorder bonuses for Battletoads Wii.

I was sure somebody would make it happen. There's too much history in that name to let it go to waste. But who would be brave enough? You know people will be expecting twelve-years-worth of awesomeness from the game, even if the new developer started over.

And so it was Gearbox. I'm glad to see somebody competent is taking care of this, because I do have some expectations of the game.

I hoping this will be one of those instant classics. I definitely have a lot of faith in the company - they've produced Valve-quality games from the beginning. They've already proved they can make a loose and jaunty FPS with Borderlands.

I never finished the others, but that's sort of what I'm expecting out of this one. Looking forward to it!

They haven't started over- You can see from the footage that most of the stuff are things that have been in earlier stuff.
I don' care how good it'll be, as long as they have all the cheeky humour and adult themes. That's what makes a good Duke game :)

That's good to know.... I kind of want it to be made from what they had before. It gives the game a feeling of legacy, or something. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the footage because all I've seen is off-screen footage at the PAX event and I'm waiting for a good old-fashioned gameplay trailer.

If you check up on youtube, there is actually a good deal of gameplay footage floating around. A lot of it is from before Gearbox took over the project, but the gameplay video they presented at PAX looks like it's mostly the same material.

Borderlands was amazing and there was alot of humor in it. Gearbox doin Duke Nukem makes sense. I expect great things from them.

All Gearbox is really doing is giving the original devs a place to work and the funding to finish the project. Most of the people working on completing the game were rehired from the people 3D Realms laid off. Plus gameplay footage from before and after Gearbox too over is identical. I doubt they'll be rewriting or redesigning anything in the game at this point. Don't expect this game to in any way resemble Borderlands, it won't.

That's hardly a downer. With as long as this game has been in development, I wouldn't want Gearbox simply taking over and making a Borderlands clone. All the early gameplay impressions basically say the same thing. The game plays more like a classic FPS and really isn't anything like Borderlands. Personally, I think it's better that they don't screw with the design too much. I'd rather see a true follow up to Duke 3D and not some other company's interpretation.

You're problem is you take stuff to seriously. I was just busting your balls and you write this long paragraph in response. Which I only read half of BTW.

Shoot, the last time I played Nukem was on the 64... or was it? Shoot, Blockbuster used to be crammed with multiple copies of this game. I think I recall when the game was announced on an old EGM magazine.

Then it just kinda... vanished. xD

I dunno. The good news is, it's finally coming. Someone picked it up to go, "Y'know, I really miss this. Let's do this thing." On the other hand, I dunno. Duke's awesome, but as far as I've known him, it's an homage to Bruce Campbell and Rowdy Roddy Piper fighting pigs (who are cops; HA. Heh. Hrm... xD). But I guess that's the charm in it, so - I totally dug this stuff back then.

The Duke's gotta lotta catching up to do since then. Lara got real, Mario's got a Wii, Sonic's on life support, and Crash (Bandicoot)... I dunno. Probably hoping Sony'll make him their mascot again.

I just thought some people might be interested to know that they put a trailer, and the game is slated for a May 3rd release.

(Warning: Video has blurred nudity... kind of NSFW)

You can see they went to extra care to show us that it's just like we remember the ol' Duke... Strippers, toilets, and the over-the-top violence we remember from twelve years ago. And YES, it's really going to be finished.

Duke Nukem will always be legendary, but he'll probably be more legendary for his game not coming out... not for the game we're about to get. I'm going to predict intense scrutiny on the game, and mixed levels of disappointment.

It looks a bit clunky in the movements and too hard-edged on all the models and other graphics. Pretty old-fashioned in videogame terms in that regard. That's just based on what I see there though, the real thing might be better.

But even with all of that, as long as the gameplay is good, the controls work well and all that stuff and the humour is there, then none of the above will matter.

If the pissing, the nudity, the adult themes are actually really IN the game and not just a lame teaser for that promo, or stuck on being pixelated or something, then that will be the prize that makes this something special ^_^
...as long as the gameplay, humour etc is there to back it up ofcourse.

Never got the appeal of duke nukem, the humour and that was fine but the gameplay was really weak. I always got bored really quick, so really not that enthused about a new one.

What I liked about Duke3D was the feeling of fighting my way through familiar environments. Before Duke, FPS games had me running through rooms and corridors, all parts of some kind of unrealistic moon base or something. Even in Doom 2 where you go to earth and fight in a "city", it still felt like you were running around hell-textured building blocks.

In Duke3D I was in a theater, a museum, a street corner, and many other places that (at least at the time) felt "real". You're right, the gameplay itself was derivative and in many situations not quite as satisfying as Doom.

But I spent WAY more time building levels in Duke3D than I did actually playing the game.

I probably won't get Duke Nukem Forever, but the fact that it's actually coming out at all is interesting to me.

The gameplay itself looks pretty bland, but I watched that trailer and saw everything I wanted to see. I'm picking it up simply for the edginess and how it satirizes the typical single-player shooter.

Duke was never the most cutting edge or original FPS on the market, but it was one of the most fun.

Ultimately, it's probably impossible for this game to live up to the expectations after all this time but, as long as its sense of humour is intact, it could still get half-way there!

Duke gameplay was always just... fine. It was actually a bit of a step up from Doom because you had far more options in what you could do and of course it was a lot more fun. Doom was just so relentlessly dull and stolid in tone- too serious in personality and too grey and dull in the visuals with no lightning up at all.

When Duke 3D came out it was such a relief from that. And back then there weren't a sea of FPS! There was Wolfstein 3D that'd come out before Doom and...? I dunno, it was pretty much just Doom and Duke that were the big ones with no competition.

Later you had good stuff like Decent and System Shock and who knows what else, but for the time, compared to its peers, Duke 3D's gameplay was great.
--------------

This stuff about waiting so long so it better be worth it and living up the the hype etc is just idiotic to me. Whatever! -(The Yhatze rant was a beautiful example of that species of immaturity)
I don't care about childish expectations, all I was ever interested in was getting a chance to return to that silly hyperbolic action movie world with its crazy humour and raunchiness- with updated graphics and more content.

The one thing I think Doom had over Duke3D's gameplay was the portions where you'd get to mow down hordes of lower-level enemies in a sort of zen-like spree. I just remember times when you had zombies, imps, and the pink guys coming right at you, and one well-placed shot from the double-barrel shotgun could take down seven of them while you raced to a safer location.

I think Duke needed an enemy slightly weaker than their weakest enemy if they wanted that kind of fun. But luckily Duke excelled over Doom in LOTS of other ways. You're right, the environment was one of the most prominent ways.

I think the important thing for a Duke Nukem game is not for it to bring something new or innovative, since that's never what the games were about. The games were about the Duke, he was the reason people bought the game, to watch this badass guy blowing up stuff, picking up chicks, and not chewing much bubble gum. So as long as this game brings the Duke factor, I think it'll be fun and awesome. At least I'll have an excuse to go around Wal-Mart spouting off one-liners, if anything.

One thing I'm looking forward to... throwing pipe bombs into a toilet stall then blowing them up. Maybe THIS time the alien using the toilet will be smart enough throw them back out. Maybe... :)

Unlike other FPS games I played at the time, Duke isn't the serious brooding character that doesn't say anything. This is a guy who's pulling off one-liners the entire time you are playing. I've yet to see another FPS where you encounter an alien using the toilet.... or where you get to use the toilet yourself. :)

I really should play the game again as I've been told quite a few easter eggs were built into it. I think I saw a scene from The Terminator in there on Youtube...

Now if I was only as "macho" as Duke himself I might actually be able to get through the original Silent Hill game's "dark high school" section... and maybe I also won't scare myself silly trying to play Resident Evil 4... :(

Oh, well... what's another month? I just hope the jokes are worth it. Like the one I hear is at the beginning of the game. A soldier hands Duke his green power armor and Duke tells him what that power armor is really for. And at that point a soldier charges into the alien horde Leeroy Jenkins style... :)

Or so I've read... :)

Oh, don't worry. From what I got my hands on at PAX last year, the jokes really will make this game shine. My guess is that any naysayers for this game will be the ones approaching it as a serious shooter. The joke's on them.
