Hey! Might as well put some stuff in here.

This was a sketch originally drawn for a Sketch Tavern Forum "Life Drawing" thread . Apparently, though, when they say "life drawing", they literally mean "try to make it look real". (Ptsssht! Whatever, man! If I wanted to have a realistic picture, I'd go out and buy me a Kodak Fun Saver 35!) Anyways, was based off of a photo, which I think was taken as a reference to some anime show or something. I don't know; I've never seen it. I just drew from the photo [img215.imageshack.us].



I never really cottoned to the Sketch Tavern forums, and I don't think they ever cottoned to me. This might have been for a number of reasons, but mostly I think it was because I was so stupendously worse than the rest of them (most are either licensed animators, illustrators, or people who have otherwise been drawing things for a very, very long time). There's a bunch of other DD people on there, though, so I won't tell you not to go there.

Anyways: More stuff by me up here soon. Maybe.

Nice sketch, Ian. I see what you mean about sketch-tavern. Berlin Poe is getting beaten up by a bunch of self proclaimed "experts" over there as we speak.

The trouble with that rather interesting Sketch Tavern place is that people really go there to critique each other, not to compliment. They'll do it in a blunt, inexpert, clumsy, forthright manner, because that's how "artists" critique.
-Drawing type artists who've not had much social experience with other artists that is ;)
Basically; they're not being mean, they're just doing their (sometimes hamfisted) versions of giving "honest" opinions to try and help each other improve. If you don't want your ego deflated, don't post there, and if you really want to get better, take a few courses and practise; but unless you're willing to do that, places like the "sketch tavern" are as good as any, and maybe better than most. At least they're willing to try and "help" you. :)

Right. It's for professional critiques. And I'm just not at the level of "professional" yet.

A "professional crtique" would be one that they're payed to give. Only art instructors and teachers do that. ;)
A critique by an art professional is a different thing; not quite as expert at being a critique, but very helpful nontheless because of all the work experience it carries with it.
You're always at enough of a level to recieve a critique. It just depends on what kind of critique it is and what you take away from it.

Yeah, but when you're posting on an art forum, and you're in the bottom 10% (with less refinement in your art and less of a portfolio to back you up), it goes without saying that you're dragging the entire group down with you. Only when you get rid of the big stupid glaring mistakes in your art can you safely and politely ask others how to get rid of the little mistakes.

...I mean, I may be wrong here, but that's always been the general impression I've had.

I dunno, there are a lot of amatures on that site.

I dunno how much drawing from life you do, Ian, but it is really helpful to learn to draw from life. The art class I've been taking this year has been really dedicated to getting realism down, and it's really helped my cartoony art as well. Considering you're going to SCAD, practicing life drawing will definitely help in your life drawing classes. Because you're probably going to have to take a LOT of those.

As for the website it's not the whole critique thing, but it's HOW they critique. These guys are ruthless. Like with Berlin Poe, he made some changes to his work and some of them liked it, and others were like "Shut up. We're helping you. If you didn't expect this, don't ask us for our help. Pussy."

That kind of stuff doesn't help at all. I remember how defensive I was when Eggbert first reviewed my comic. These guys are being 100% harsher. I guess they find that's the only way to make an impression on someone over the net to get them to change something.

No. That's the thing: An art teacher wouldn't approach it like that; only another artitist offering advice; because they don't know how to give advice correctly.
The advice is still worthy, it's just less likely to be helpful because they don't know how to craft it so that it'll be well recieved by the person they're trying to help. It can even be unhelpful in that form.

Ian- you may say your art doesn't look professional, but actually that picture makes me think of the Quentin Blake illustrations which adorned my beloved books as a child. ^_^

Heh, thanks. I only wish i could draw/paint like that on a regular basis, that portrait was a rare glimpse at what I'm capable of, but rarely take the time to do.
