Hello all,
I am testing the waters here to see if anyone would be interested in a DD book club. The club would read and discuss both graphic novels & books. As with most book clubs we would take turns selecting books, reading them and discussing them as we go along.
I think it could be very enjoyable to read & analyze say The Watchmen or The Screwtap Letters or even a web comic or two.
If anyone is seriously intersted (Not I'd love to but I don't have the time) please post in here. If we get enough people we'll start the club.

sounds like a great idea, but this maybe better suited in media discussion instead of debate and discuss.

Well part of a book club is to discuss the books after they have been read.

Heh, that sounds like fun. What books/comics were you thinking of? Though, whatever they are, what I could read would be drastically cut by the size of the city library.

If this really does start up, I might want to move this to the media section... not because books aren't good discussion, but because I think the same deep level of discussion could happen in a forum section that encompasses books.
...unless we start to get the dumb people coming in and saying "i nevr red this book but i like naruto."
What do you guys think? Keep it here or move it to the media section?

discussion, I think.. this forum has stricter rules than media (like, people's posts have gotten deleted if they're not pertinent to the subject discussed), so I think it would keep the talk on a higher intellectual level if we kept it in here.
I think it sounds like an excellent idea though!!

By all means let's go ahead and do this. :) I'm excited already as I read obscenely much and I have been known to stick to an opinion no matter how unpopular or unconventional if I truly believe it.
...and I am an author! Yay! I'm in.

Alright then all wee need are some suggestions for books.
I'm open to the idea of graphic novels and web comics along side novels and literature but we'll need some ground rules.
The number of finish web comics is very low and the ones with epic long forms stories which are good for discussion are still running for the most part.
I'm saying something web comic format needs to have a decent amount of story (gag a day or Dr. McNinja don't leand themselves so well to discussion as V for Vendetta) and and perhaps a mage minimum.
Likewise I'm thinking with graphic novel's things are going to be tough. I've love to discuss and critic "Vampire Game" but given that it is 17 volumes at $15.00 a piece that seems rather impractical when good old "Brave New World" is $5.00 on sale at your local book store and free from any government sponsored dead tree distrabution center as it is a offical "Classic" which means it is almost certainly depressing as with most classics and award winners.
.
I'm open to other suggestions though. I'll start and offical thread next week on this but lets use this time to brain storm. With a group this loose I don't think taking turns picking books would work so well be obviously we don't want a book dictatorship.
I'm personally in favor of the Screwtap Letters. I've not read it, I'm told it is an easy read and it is by C.S. Lewis so its doubltless and moral overtones that make for interesting discussion and I'm told from reliable sources it is one of his best works. More importantly I think it would be a short read compaired to one of, say Umerto Eco's books which would lets us see how well this works.

I'd suggest David Levy's The Gods of Foxcroft. It's science fiction, it taps upon innumerable issues from free will to genetics to death, dying and suicide, religion and being secular, and it is NOT depressing :) I think most would enjoy it.
I could also suggest some international literature, to get to know authors from several obscure countries. Here in Greece there are some pretty worthwhile titles which are also translated in English.
We could also start light with short/long stories, if people are intimidated by reading. :)
Might I suggest then also The Country of the Blind by H.G. Wells? It's right up there with Brave New World and it is also not depressing but great ground for discussion.
Ok, I will stop now lol!
