Myxo took the words out of my mouth....or....the letters...out of my....fingers. Yeah.

The only other thing I've done that helps a lot is looking at a real picture of a gun.

Here try these image searches for references. Drawing guns is really easy, it`s basically a bunch of boxes joined together, like most things.
