If its awesome, thats because of Steven Chow being awesome, and hooray.

Chow being a producer doesn't change the fact that he is neither writing nor directing the movie. He has no input whatsoever on the actual content of the film. James Wong was chosen by Fox, not Chow, to write the script and direct. In fact, the only thing I've really seen Chow do in regards to this film is recommend some HK actors for the cast (I don't think he even has enough creative control to cast the movie on his own, hence Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Texas Battle, and Emmy Rossum).

If by some miracle this movie doesn't suck, I'll think differently of James Wong, but I sure as Hell won't be crediting Stephen Chow with any success this movie may or may not have.

As for the pictures, I still hate the idea of Bulma and Goku being around the same age and why is it that the director decided copying the hair styles from the series would only work for Goku who now just looks goofy compared to the other characters. Also, when half the cast already barely speaks English, would it have killed them to cast a Chinese actor as Goku? I guess it doesn't make much sense to criticize it at this point. The movie was a disaster waiting to happen even before they started preproduction. The series is of a type that can't be translated to live action in ANY way that will appeal to the fans and the story is too out there to ever appeal to your average Joe.

And looking at their sales, I still say I'm right. Neither of them were blockbusters here. And quite frankly, it's a bad comparison, anyway. Both Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle had story lines that were pretty straight-forward, even if the presentation was a little kooky. Also, Chow is making movies primarily for a Chinese audience, while this is being written and directed by an American for an American audience. Just because he's helping out with casting, don't make the assumption this is one of his movies, it isn't.

That's because no one gives a fuck about Soccer or Kung-fu right now.

Dragonball is a brand name. Speed Racer was a dumb idea, but hell that's making it's money back. Same logic. My point is, it can work and be good and sell, but obviously won't (except for maybe that sell part, but again that's brand recognition for you).
