Everything I've seen and heard makes it look pretty boring, actually. It's also fairly short (6-10 hours for the first play through). It's really only a spinoff and not a true Dragon Quest game and is based off of one of those cheap plug-and-play games from Japan. If you're expecting a deep RPG experience, then you're going to be sorely disappointed. The game's also been getting pretty shit reviews in Japan (the highest I've seen is Famitsu's review which was mostly 8's, but generally I'm seeing scores in the 6 and below range) as well as terrible sales and that's saying a lot considering Dragon Quest is like the Holy Grail over there.

They'd have to change an awful lot to improve it at this point, and considering they're only taking seven month to do the localization, I wouldn't count on it. I've noticed the hype has really died down since the Japanese release, as well. Even Square/Enix isn't trying to push it anymore. I think they know they have a dud on their hands and would prefer to promote the games that still have a chance to succeed rather than dump money into something that's already failed in the country where it had the greatest sales potential.

Isukun hasn't played it. Don't go solely by his word. Wait for it to hit the states and read a lot of reviews.

True, but I have seen it played and it really didn't look that interesting. At least it looked boring enough, that I didn't want to bother trying it. The person who was playing it at the time didn't look like they were having much fun, either.
